The Soxtalk Committee on Closing
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 26, 2010 -> 05:23 PM) Maybe it's just me, but I think this 4 game series against the Rays may be the end of that talk. It's not just you.

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 26, 2010 -> 05:08 PM) Really, he's been awful, but I can give a list of names who've been worse. Randy Williams...you could argue he's been the worst regular reliever in baseball and I'd believe that. Good lord, Balta. Fine. He's been one of the worst? Better?

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
I'm really starting to despise save%. No matter how bad Bobby pitches, and he's been as bad as any reliever in baseball, it always comes back to "well, we won the game, right?"

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
QUOTE (chw42 @ May 26, 2010 -> 04:54 PM) Bobby did have a 3.63 xFIP. But I guess that hasn't been the case so far this season. That's still nothing to get loud about from your closer.

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 26, 2010 -> 04:36 PM) This year is over then huh? His numbers arent very good, but he doesnt have a downward trend since his worst year ERA and WHIP wise was 2006 and 2007 and 2008 were stellar. 2009 was decent for a closer, but not what you'd call dominant. There is no trend in there that I can see other than the trend of soxtalkers screaming for someones head 2 months into the season. Understatement of the year? Bobby's '09 was by no measure "decent." That is unless you want to compare him to the likes of Kevin Gregg. 3.71 ERA, 1.28 whip for a closer is not good. That's not even getting into the 1.52 HR/9. Other than save percentage, which is becoming a pretty overrated stat to evaluate closers, there isn't anything in Bobby's standard or advanced statistics that points to any kinda turn around. Edit: the K-rate is good. I didn't even realize he had 21 in 17 IP so far. That's not hard to miss when you're WHIP is over 2, I guess.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 26, 2010 -> 04:05 PM) So far this year yes, but he is not horses***. Thinking that 2 months of his performance makes him worthless is pretty much horses***. Problem is he's gone from mediocre or average (2009) to replacement level this year. This year hasn't come out of nowhere.

Phillies scouting Jenks and Putz
QUOTE (WCSox @ May 26, 2010 -> 03:38 PM) I wouldn't. And that's saying a lot. I'm exaggerating (a little). I just can't wait to read Bobby's post-game comments. You know he's going to spin today's debacle as just some flukish occurrence and that he ultimately got the save. All he's done is make excuses for his below average performance the last years and two months. QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 26, 2010 -> 03:39 PM) pitchFX has him right there at 96 again today (98 on Saturday) as it has most of the year, I don't see why the cameras would be off for Jenks but right on for Pena (94/95) and Thornton (96/97). It just goes to show you that velocity really means very little when your control and movement are s*** and your offspeed pitches are mediocre to non-existent. I can't argue the numbers. He just doesn't appear to be throwing that hard. I tune into Dodgers/Giants games whenever they're leading after 8. You don't need any gun to see that Broxton and Wilson are consistently hitting 98 MPH. If not for a gun, you would think Bobby was topping out at 93-94.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 26, 2010 -> 03:30 PM) If it was only 1 ballpark, I'd agree, but he's been there consistently this last month. Then Bobby's got the least intimidating 97-98 MPH FB I've seen this year. Either way, he sucks. I'd rather have '03 Billy Koch or '05 Shingo.

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 26, 2010 -> 03:18 PM) You guys that hate Jenks fail to consider the fact he normally gets the end result, the game saved. His track record seems to suggest he ain't so good when provided a tie game or huge lead. He did finish the f***ing game, right? We won, right? Why not look glass half full for a change? Kotsay, he of the .225 batting average who guys like me hate on, hit a home run. Teahen, the bum, did get two RBIs. Rios good again. It's like why would anybody even care Beckham sucked again today? We won the game and took 2-3 which is acceptable on the road. We win another series. Those are good signs for this bad team. Now we see if we lose all four in Tampa, win just one, or do the right thing and split. No way this team is capable of 3 of 4 or 4 in Tampa. You'd be better off just saying that you refuse to in life criticize any member of the 2005 White Sox, no matter how despicable their current performance is. Bobby Jenks is HORSEf***INGs***.

Phillies scouting Jenks and Putz
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 26, 2010 -> 03:16 PM) Really? Between Jenks hitting 97-98 and the curveball he used to throw up there, plus Jenks's previously demonstrated ability to not only throw cut fastballs for strikes but to change speeds on stuff...the only pitch I'd say would set Jose apart is the forkball. It could be just me. But I don't think for a second Jenks is throwing that hard, despite what the guns are saying. I've seen 97-98. If Bobby's throwing that hard, guys like Jonathan Broxton and Brian Wilson are throwing 103.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ May 26, 2010 -> 11:06 AM) Can you explain this a little more? I mean I understand that its more difficult to pitch in the AL because of the DH, but with the frequency that players move from team to team, I don't get calling the entire league inferior. Javier Vazquez. /the end

QUOTE (docsox24 @ May 26, 2010 -> 03:06 PM) did anybody think at this time last year that contreras would end up being a better closer than jenks? Jose Contreras has infinitely better stuff than Bobby. Not surprising at all.

That'd be somethin' if Wilson fell all the way to the Phillies.

QUOTE (Lillian @ May 26, 2010 -> 10:01 AM) Any discussion of Peavy should take into consideration the money. At this point, I would just be happy if someone would take him and his contract. The worst thing that can happen to a roster is to have someone being paid a huge portion of the total payroll, who is not performing well. Ask the Cubs about how they feel over the "Big Z" dilemma. Please, the guy has had, what, 12 starts since he's been here? We're nowhere near the point of contract albatross. And the comparison to Zambrano is laughable. If you guys really think Peavy is suddenly a 6+ERA pitcher, have at it. Just save all the "I'm happily eating crow" bulls*** once he turns it around. And unless there's a physical issue, he will.

QUOTE (hogan873 @ May 26, 2010 -> 09:42 AM) I'm just reading your statement and not taking into account that there may be more to it, but I think everyone is looking very closely at Peavy, and all of the criticism right now is just. He's not pitching well, and hindsight being 20/20, many of us are groaning right now. There is. jphat spent a good 6 months ripping Alex Rios ad nauseum. I get the feeling there's a part of him that hates the fact Rios would get some MVP votes if the season ended today. And now he's turned his attention (IMO obsession) towards Peavy. I have no problem with criticizing Jake's performance to this point. He's been bad. But pining for Clayton f***ing Richard? I don't think so. Jake can go on to be Jamie Navarro the sequel (won't happen), and no logical baseball fan would look back and say "Gee, if only we had Clayton Richard? How much better off would we be?"

QUOTE (jphat007 @ May 26, 2010 -> 08:34 AM) I don't think Richard has given up more than 3ER in any start this year. 16 million and him instead of Peavy would look pretty neat right now Obviously Rios has shut you up. Now you've moved on to a Glenn Close obsession with Peavy.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 25, 2010 -> 05:53 PM) LOL, so 24 homers over his previous 77 games and 223 PA's. That's a sweet little 9.3 PA/HR. Babe Bautista strikes again.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 25, 2010 -> 11:30 PM) Way to suck for the first two months of the season, White Sox. You'd have to give this team a big, fat grade of D as we plod toward June. Big fat F as far as I'm concerned.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ May 25, 2010 -> 10:37 PM) IF PHX's bench keep outperforming the Lakers bench like they did tonight, that series is going to go right down to the wire. Meh. The Suns are merely delaying the inevitable. I don't see them winning in LA. And their bench and that zone they're playing won't be nearly as effective on the road.

5/25 Games
QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ May 25, 2010 -> 08:23 PM) Way too early to call him a bust, but with Rios dong so well this year you figure he will be our CF barring something seriously changing so do you try and package Dank2 in a trade if the team gets to a point when even Danks1 is fair game in a firesale? Um, HELL YES! Jordan Danks has never been considered a premium prospect anywhere outside the White Sox organization.

2010 MLB Draft Catch All
I'd obviously rather have Wilson, but I certainly wouldn't be disappointed to end up with a guy like Castellanos (assuming Wilson is off the board). He totally goes against what has become a typical White Sox first round draft pick. HS kid, high risk, ect. I'll believe it when I see it, though. Like dan said, this upcoming draft will prove just how serious the White Sox are (they talk a good game) about their dedication to building a top-flight system.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 25, 2010 -> 05:02 PM) You won't be seeing many pitchers make the Hall of Fame in this current era. They won't be winning enough games and lasting enough years to win 300. Rivera will make it because of the NY media. Name any other "locks" for the Hall of Fame who pitch? Rivera will make it because he's by far and away the greatest relief pitcher to ever live.

2010 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 25, 2010 -> 09:58 AM) I leave for two weeks and Jose Bautista is hitting like Mark McGwire. I mean, I didn't expect 14 homers out of Konerko by this point in time, but atleast there is some history of power within Konerko's game. But Jose Bautista? I also looked at Bautista's career numbers after Gaston named him the leadoff hitter to open the season, and I was wondering what the hell he was leading off for when he's like a career .240 hitter with mediocre plate discipline. Dude's actually been a really solid utility player his entire career, generally around .240/.335/.415, and he's gotten hot for a month. Maybe he can keep it up and hit 30 homers or something crazy. He did hit 10 HRs with a slugging percentage over .600 during Sept/Oct of last year. So I guess you could say that was a little preview of what was to come.
