  1. I like his assessment of the Cubs.
  2. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Mar 31, 2010 -> 09:07 PM) No one's panicking. Right. Just like nobody was looking to replace Mark Teahen after 20 or so spring training at bats.
  3. So he had a 1.17 spring ERA on March 17th. Couple of rough outings and it's time to panic? Well I guess we have to pass the time somehow until opening day. Pretty stupid article. Nobody is asking Freddy to relive 2004. He's going to have games where he simply doesn't have it. HE'S OUR 5TH STARTER! Take a look around baseball at other teams' projected 5th starter. All we need is league average, even slightly worse would be acceptable, from Freddy.
  4. QUOTE (joeynach @ Mar 31, 2010 -> 06:51 PM) Does he throw anything besides junk...and his 86 MPH fastball counts as junk. Where have you been the last 4 years?
  5. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 31, 2010 -> 07:14 PM) Their pitching and defense is too good. They won't score any runs (without a trade, and I still think they are the sleeper in the Adrian Gonzalez race and adding him would be a huge addition for that offense), but their pitching will keep enough teams off the board that they'll stay afloat and win more than 70 games. KC basically has no offense, no pitching, and no defense. They are going to do a lot of struggling this year, and they have quite a few nasty and stupid contracts - Meche is on the hook for 2/$24 the next 2, Guillen gets $12 this year, Farnsworth is going to get $5 this year with his contract and buyout, Betancourt has $9 mill left on his ($3 this, $4 next, $2 buyout or $6 TO if they're stupid), Cruz is getting $3.75 with his buyout, and Kendall is due 2/$6. That's a lot of money ($38 mill this year) to a boatload of pretty terrible baseball players. Other than Brett Anderson and Ben Sheets (the latter being a complete unknown at this point), their rotation stinks, IMO. I don't know why they're dicking Gio Gonzalez around. I realize his BB/9 is outta control. But his K/9 was almost 10. There's nothing more for him to prove in the minors. May as well let him figure it out at the ML level. Not like they're in contention for anything. Their offense is embarrassing. The bullpen should be pretty good, especially with the return of Joey Devine. But I don't foresee them having too many leads to protect after 6 innings this year.
  6. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 31, 2010 -> 07:07 PM) Greg Aquino did everything he could to make the team but didn't. 12.1 innings pitched , 0.00 ERA, 0.57 WHIP, 8K 3 BB. With Santos out of options he had no chance. He's a 32-year old journeyman reliever with a career ERA/WHIP of 5.31/1.62. 12 spring innings doesn't change the fact that he's not a ML caliber pitcher. I don't feel that bad for him.
  7. Roy Halladay is going to make mince meat of the NL. It's going to be one hell of a tug of war between he and Lincecum for the CY (with my first love, Clayton Kershaw, being the sleeper).
  8. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 31, 2010 -> 06:42 PM) Personally, I think that's crazy. The Indians atleast have an offense. The Royals have one great starting pitcher, one sorta good starting pitcher, one good reliever, and then a handful of crap. And their lineup is terrible. I think KC is going to lose 100+ games and will probably be the worst team in the AL. I'm thinking Oakland. Billy Beane needs another book to come out or something.
  9. QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Mar 31, 2010 -> 06:03 PM) One more tidbit, one of the scouts indicated that losing John Ely is not a loss to the Sox at all, he reminded us that he was 14-3 on a dominant Barons team and that he is scheduled to be about the 4th reliever in New Mexico this year. Not even scenario/JPN made a big deal about losing Ely.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 31, 2010 -> 03:36 PM) Santos retires the tribe in the 5th...3 k's, 1 bb. And I still haven't gotten a chance to see him in actual game action.

QUOTE (Stocking @ Mar 31, 2010 -> 12:39 AM) J4L how have you been doing? Staying the course? Still goin' strong. I will admit I had a little 6-week lapse (personal problems) from about mid-January through February. I didn't do much working out or running. But I've been a madman the last month. I'm doing more now than I was last summer when I was at my peak. I've come to realize that training/running/ect is like therapy for me. When I'm running, I feel like I'm all by myself in the world. Which is a good thing. I don't think about anything.
  12. QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 31, 2010 -> 02:49 PM) If it's the middle of May and Freddy is 1-5, and Hudson is 5-1 in Charlotte, I don't think they'll hesitate to replace him. You're kidding, right? W/L records during spring training? Freddy would have to either get hurt or go Chien-Ming Wang on us to get booted from the rotation. If Freddy can give us league average numbers (4.50 ERA, 1.30 WHIP) from the 5th slot, he'll be in the rotation.
  13. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 31, 2010 -> 12:09 PM) Marmol (who has filthy stuff but walks a guy an inning) is their best guy. The rest are Marshall, Samardzjia, Grabow, Caridad, Berg and eventually Gorzellany when Lilly returns. That is ugly. Rotation of Zambrano, Dempster, Wells, Silva and Gorzellany/Lilly. Not much prettier. Considering their payroll, they have one of the most horrific looking rosters I've seen in a while.
  14. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 31, 2010 -> 02:08 PM) Well I wouldn't go far as saying their bullpen is "a mess" just their closer situation. Like I said earlier I think they will address that down the line (before or during the deadline) Their rotation is by far their biggest question mark. The Twins have already been okay with losing Mauer for a while early on last season and still were in the hunt. (and of course won the division) Morneau as well in the past. NOW, if they lose both guys around the same time, then you have a point. (Morneau's injuries have been more fluke though) I don't think Span will duplicate his .380+ OBP again, but he is very legit (.350+ for sure) and their defense (minus Crede for Punto) is much better all around. But they too, are counting on some guys to have big years pitching wise. (I personally like Liriano, but I doubt the other guys in that rotation) Their offense is the least of their concerns. I think Scott Baker is primed for a big year. But, yeah, the rest of that rotation is pretty plain.
  15. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 31, 2010 -> 07:25 AM) Looked over some of the other divisions, and I found another questionable projection IMO. They have the Angels finishing last in the AL West, average record of 76.2-85.8, only winning the division 2.5 out of 100 times. They have the other 3 teams at or above 500, with the A's winning the division 19.5/100. I know the Angels lost Lackey, and are supposed to finally fall off their AL West throne, blah blah blah, but I really doubt they end up the worst team in a bad division. I'll give up baseball for eternity if that awful Oakland team wins that division.
  16. QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 09:27 PM) and FWIW, Fransisco Liriano was pretty much named the #5 starter for the Twins this year. There had been talk of him in the closer role. His first start of the season will be in Chicago I hear (and you can tell by his spring numbers) that he's been pretty dominant to this point. I figure 2010 will make or break if he's ever able to realize the massive potential he had back in '06.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 11:48 PM) As soon as I get money, I'm in this as well, but my personal workout, I've dropped close to 30 pounds now and haven't had this type of body since my senior year in high school. Simple what push-ups/sit-ups and running can do to a man. Nothing sheds fat like distance running.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 08:21 PM) They did it in a day for the play in game. But that was essentially a playoff game. Everybody jumped on the bandwagon. I don't see the same result for a Monday home game in April. Even if it is opening day.
  19. QUOTE (chw42 @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 08:42 PM) For a team that needs offensive help, I don't think that's a good move at all. Tell me about it. I can appreciate their emphasis on defense. But this isn't the deadball era. You have to score some runs to win games.
  20. QUOTE (Chi Town Sox @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 09:06 PM) Longoria lasted and we actually ended up with a very nice team C Ryan Doumit 1B Adrian Gonzalez 2B Chase Utley 3B Evan Longoria SS Jose Reyes OF Carl Craword OF Adam Dunn OF Hunter Pence Util Nate McClouth SP Josh Beckett SP Yovani Gallardo SP Ricky Nolasco SP Gavin Floyd RP Francisco Rodriguez RP Andrew Bailey BENCH C Geovany Soto 2B/SS Asdrubal Cabrera 3B Casey Blake 3B Alex Gordon SS Elvis Andrus OF Corey Hart OF Colby Rasmus SP Homer Bailey SP Ryan Dempster RP/SP Justin Masterson Took a chance on Reyes in round 7 since we had a lot of good offense by round 6, hopefully it pays off - Taking Utley definitely worked out well May I ask how many teams are in this league? No way it's 12.
  21. QUOTE (knightni @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 07:50 PM) I'd rather have ARod and Zobrist/Roberts/Phillips than Utley and Zimmerman/Sandoval/Reynolds. Well I wouldn't. The end.
  22. QUOTE (striker @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 04:45 PM) Season starts in a week. Anyone interested? Send it over to me.
  23. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 05:04 PM) Do you think Twins have the best lineup in MLB? Buster Olney does. PS: Video. I'd rank them 4th. I'd rank the Yankees, Phillies and Rays over them. Although their (the Twins) top 6 (or 7 when Kubel is in LF and Thome DHs) is arguably as good as any in the game.
  24. That's wayyyyyyyyyy too many batting categories. Triples? lol. I doubt Longoria will still be on the board by the time you make your second pick. But Zimmerman, Sandoval and Reynolds should all still be there. So I'd no doubt go with Utley.
  25. QUOTE (earthshiner @ Mar 30, 2010 -> 04:09 PM) just a reminder who was on the OD roster last year: Miller Betemit Lillibridge Fields Wise MacDougal Anderson Colon things can only be better That's some damn good perspective.
