Buddy Bell conference call
QUOTE (Knackattack @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 04:41 PM) Yeah, but take into account how many times we've heard this now. His defense must really be something for him to receive so much praise. Yeah, this isn't a case of a minor league instructor simply hyping up one of his kids. You can go to any prospect site out there and they all pretty much conclude JD is a pretty gifted CF.

Some perspective
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 09:48 AM) On his BR page click 'batting' at the top then scroll down to 'Baserunning & Misc. Stats' and the 'PO' and 'PO CS' stats are right in the middle. 8 in '05, 7 in '06 and an absurd 9 last season, 11 total. Last year he was caught stealing 13 times and picked off another 9 times and only produced 30 SB, 23 unnecessary outs on the basepaths with a payoff of only 30 SB? He truly is an awful baserunnner. 11 times? I was thinking 6 or 7. Yeah, he's really bad. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 10:18 AM) Its good to see that the stats backup how bad his baserunning appears to be. For someone that hit a walkoff WS homer, its bad that in my mind he might be remembered almost as much for that extra inning pick off vs. Seattle last year. Yeah, that is pretty bad. That was one game in an 83 loss season.

Zoom, you said we have until midnight this Friday to give you our final list, correct? I'm still torn between Santana and Price. I'll let you know before then.

Ozzie Guillen's Approval Rating
QUOTE (Ultimate Warrior @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 01:34 AM) You don't think we could have afforded Jack Cust's $2.65 million dollar contract? Russell Branyan was pretty cheap too. Look at Thome. Ozzie said he would love to have him, but would barely be able to find him any at bats, due to his brain dead rotating DH idea. There were plenty of cheaper, MUCH better alternatives to what we have now. KW gave Ozzie exactly what he wanted, and that was talent lacking "grinders" like Omar Vizquel and Mark Kotsay. We could have used the money we spent on them to sign Cust or Branyan, or possibly even matched the Tigers offer to Damon with the extra couple million we would save. Jack Cust sucks. He's a poor, poor man's Adam Dunn. His OPS has been in steady decline for three straight years (while his K% remains ridiculously high). Russell Branyan? He's so injury prone that Nick Johnson might point and laugh. He had a career year (a good first half) at 34. No thanks. And I'm glad KW didn't overpay for Damon. I'm not saying I'm crazy about our current DH situation. But those other alternatives aren't at all appealing.

2010 Minor League Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Mar 24, 2010 -> 10:52 AM) One of the Royals' top prospects Danny Duffy has quit baseball. http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=7922 That's a blow for their system, he was one of their best pitching prospects. Baseball America had him as the Royals' number 8 prospect, although I thought that was a little low. WTF? First Grant Desme gives up baseball to become a priest, now Duffy? Was there a specific reason he quit? I can't understand how these young dudes just randomly throw away the chance to make a s***load of money (even if they don't stick in the majors) playing a kid's game.

Say hey, It's Kotsay
QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 24, 2010 -> 09:48 PM) Kotsay could be batting 7th and Pierre 9th, and I would still say the bottom of our order is weak. I will also predict that if Ozzie tries to play Kotsay 4 times a week, he will be on the DL for an extended period. Are you serious? Not sure about Kotsay. But I'd love it if Pierre were the #9 hitter. You wouldn't find too many better #9 hitters in baseball.
-
Say hey, It's Kotsay
I'm not saying a thing. It's a losing proposition. This is Ozzie's baby. It's really on him this year to show 2005 wasn't your classic fluke.

Some perspective
Check out the A's projected opening day lineup. A's: 1. LF Rajai Davis 2. CF Coco Crisp 3. C Kurt Suzuki 4. DH Jack Cust 5. 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff 6. RF Ryan Sweeney 7. 2B Mark Ellis 8. 1B Daric Barton 9. SS Cliff Pennington I might take that Cubs lineup that won the World Series in "Rookie of the year" over this steaming pile of rooster s***. Our offense has a ton of question marks, but it could be MUCH worse, A's worse.

Who was the most reviled current Sox here
QUOTE (greg775 @ Mar 22, 2010 -> 11:49 PM) I don't know how anybody can think Pierre is a better player than Pods. We are going to find out how s***ty he is soon enough. Actually, Pierre is better than Pods. There's not one aspect of baseball that you can say Pods is better at. And believe me, I'm not excited at all about Pierre.

Soxtalk Non-Keeper #1
Would a laptop solve my chronic freezing problems EVERY SINGLE TIME I'm about to or in the process of drafting? This is unbelievable. Three drafts for me and all of them have been sabotaged because of this freezing bulls***.

Soxtalk Keeper 1 Thread
QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Mar 22, 2010 -> 06:19 PM) I guess I'll post mine... Hanley Ramirez Chase Utley Mark Teixeira Dan Haren Jake Peavy Still open to packaging someone like Upton (Justin) or Votto with Tex for a stud hitter or those guys with Peavy for a stud pitcher. Huh? A stud hitter? You've got Ramirez, Utley and Tex. Unless you're trying to score Pujols, I don't see how studlier you can get.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 22, 2010 -> 03:27 PM) Keepers Braun Kemp Beckham Sabathia Kershaw I hate you. We're going to have to talk trade. My goal is to have Kershaw in every league I participate in. I'm in love with that man (his talent, of course).

Opening Day Lineup
QUOTE (docsox24 @ Mar 22, 2010 -> 02:09 PM) I guess Jones is going to play a lot of CF with Rios in RF and Pierre/Carlos as LF/DH. The sox believe that Jones is the best defensive CF on the team. Rios >> Jones defensively. It's not 2003.

Teahen's struggles...
QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 22, 2010 -> 12:06 AM) Or on Opening Day when he hits a homer and knocks in 4 runs. This thread by itself has made me a Mark Teahen fan. I've never witnessed an overreaction of this magnitude to a spring training slump since I became a baseball fan back in '91.

Teahen's struggles...
This thread is ridiculous. I'm going to bookmark it and bump it in a couple months.

My first Fantasy baseball draft ever
QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Mar 21, 2010 -> 10:11 PM) I have no idea how I did. I dont know anything about the national league. I had 3rd pick out of 14 teams. Standard yahoo scoring C-AJ 1B- Adrian Gonzales 2B-Chase Utley 3B-Bacon SS-Yunel Escobar OF-Bay OF-Ethier OF-Carlos Gonzales Util-Furcal, Theriot Bench-Carlos Beltran, Scutaro, Teahan, Randy Wynn, Freddy Sanchez SP Felix Hernandez, Cliff Lee, Peavy, Zambrano, Bmac, Wuertz RP Papelbon, Thornton This isnt lineup, just how theyre listed for now. Pretty damn good to me. Amazing that you could land Utley/Hernandez in a 14 team league. You need another closer. Some speed (SB) is definitely something you might want to look into. But, yeah, for your first draft in a 14 team league, I'd say you did quite well.

JD is not a good defensive RF
QUOTE (GREEDY @ Mar 20, 2010 -> 08:59 PM) For years on this board and others, I have bashed Dye's defense in RF and I have been met with a fair share of protest. Some more dellusional than others, but for the most part it seemed that more people than not think JD was/is a solid option in RF. And clearly, a strong majority, if not all MLB GMs seem to believe that Jermaine cannot play as an everday outfielder; and JD doesn't want to be paid as a 4th OF or DH, hence the current extra time to spend with the fam. So what rock did all of you crawl under this offseason? And is Hawk or Rongey under there with you? You sure you got the right board?

Teahen's struggles...
QUOTE (Ranger @ Mar 20, 2010 -> 08:20 PM) It was important for Rios to have a good spring after the way he played last year. From a mental standpoint, it wouldn't have been a good thing to have him going into the season after a bad stint with the Sox last year followed by a bad spring training this year. It's good for any player that hasn't been consistent over recent seasons. It doesn't mean they're going to have good years, but it's better than struggling. It's important that they've been looking good in their approaches. Would've been nice for Teahen to have solid spring (and he can still finish strong) as it would also be nice if his elbow was healthy. I agree. But if all it took was 20 or so spring training at bats for Rios bashers (and there's been plenty of them) to turn into believers then you (not you specifically) were full of it from the start. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 20, 2010 -> 08:23 PM) I can't believe how much people are putting into a bad couple of months that look nothing like the rest of his career. Rios sucked last year. Nobody can deny that. But I've been on his bandwagon from the start. He's got an amazing skill-set and a solid pedigree to back it up. But I'm not going bonkers over his, to this point, solid showing in spring training.

Teahen's struggles...
Can't believe how much stock most are putting in 20 or so spring training at bats (good or bad). Andruw Jones is ready to relive 2005. People all of a sudden have faith in Alex Rios. And now because Teahen is struggling we've got people questioning the contract extension and clamoring for Chris Getz.

2010 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 20, 2010 -> 06:28 PM) I don't think it has a single thing to do with coddling, they'll keep him in the minors until June when it'll be impossible to earn a year of service (earning them an extra year of control) and he won't be Super 2 eligible down the road. It's a business decision through and through. Well, yeah. I should've mentioned the obvious business side of it. But all offseason we've heard how it'd be better for Strausburg to "fail" in the minors opposed to starting in the majors and possibly struggling. As if a couple bad starts with the Nationals could possibly destroy his confidence for life. But, yeah, it ultimately comes down to that extra year of control. It just irks me how these GM's act like spring training performance will dictate whether certain players make the opening roster or not. They obviously knew from the start that no matter how Strasburg performed that he wasn't going to break camp. But whatever.

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Mar 20, 2010 -> 07:18 PM) Either one. My keepers will be Miguel Cabrera, Troy Tulowitzki, Pablo Sandoval, Felix Hernandez and Johan Santana. Also, the last guy to sign up (soxfan420) keepers will be Ryan Zimmerman, Victor Martinez, Carl Crawford, Carlos Zambrano and Jonathan Sanchez.
