  1. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 9, 2010 -> 11:19 AM) I think Dolsi, Cabrera and possibly Threets have made bad enough showings (early) that they may now be out of the picture. Williams has the LOOGY job unless he looks awful. The last spot in the pen will come down to Santos or Hudson, and I'd bet they want Hudson getting more innings, and they keep Santos. Not to mention that this will give Hudson a chance to prove that last year's dominance wasn't a fluke. Therefore increasing his already pretty solid trade value. Best case scenario would definitely be Santos flourishing (or at least pitching well) this spring and Hudson in the minors.
  2. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 9, 2010 -> 12:38 PM) This will likely end up benefiting the Sox but for some crazy reason I'm not getting any pleasure out of a possible career ending injury to one of the best closers in the game. That's because you're a baseball fan first, Sox fan second. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I'm pretty much the same way. And if anything this gives annoying ass Twins fans (save Benchwarmin) a legitimate excuse from the get-go if we or the Tigers win the division.
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 9, 2010 -> 12:30 PM) Really? Ahead of Posey, Smoak, Alvarez, Matusz, the other Beckham? I think you can make a case for any of them. Probably others too. Yeah. The '08 draft should go down as one of the best and deepest in quite some time. No real consensus best player. Although I will say if the Pirates called and offered Alvarez for Beckham I'd be the first to volunteer to drive GB to the airport.
  4. QUOTE (chw42 @ Mar 9, 2010 -> 01:29 AM) Wouldn't it be something if our organization struck gold with two straight first round picks? After the likes of Joe Borchard, Josh Fields, Lance Broadway, and etc. this is very refreshing. And I would say we struck gold with Poreda. If only because he was instrumental in netting us Peavy. You have to give the organization a lot of credit for the drastic (and very much needed) change in draft philosophy.
  5. Real tough blow for them. But I'm not about to dismiss them. I thought they were toast after losing Santana and Hunter. They were a Rick Hahn's son coin flip call away from winning the division.
  6. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Mar 8, 2010 -> 08:13 PM) So, my yahoo account locked me out. Says my username is wrong, and i can't for the life of me think of why. God help me if the computer runs a bad draft Sorry, man. Don't know what your team looks like. But it can't possibly be worse than mine. My computer kept connecting/disconnecting/connecting/disconnecting. Then it just froze. Tried to restart and the draft page wouldn't even load. I tried again, got through, and a few minutes later it froze again. So I just said f*** it. My team blows after my top 6 picks or so. I'm pretty damn screwed.
  7. Doesn't make much sense to trade him right after his injury-plagued 2009.
  8. Can't take too much from a few spring training games. But it's better to see him doing well than being 1/15 with 8 K's. I'm very excited about this kid. Last year was the first time I watched college baseball with any regularity. So I actually got to see him play some. The skillset is there. I hope we hang on to him.
  9. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Mar 8, 2010 -> 05:35 PM) Not a bad day by Gavin, PK gets his first dinger. Santos tossing heat. I'll take it. What was his line?
  10. Yawn. Not that big a deal. Certainly didn't require a story.
  11. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Mar 8, 2010 -> 12:43 PM) One of baseball prospectus' comps was Matt Garza. I could see that kind of learning curve, coupled with eventually solid results. I'll take that in a heartbeat. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 8, 2010 -> 12:54 PM) That would be the best homegrown pitcher here since Mark Buehrle. It's amazing that you have to go back that far.
  12. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Mar 8, 2010 -> 04:56 PM) how long before Mitchell starts being talked about this years beckham?? Not gonna happen. What happened last year with Beckham was rare. Mitchell unquestionably needs at least 1 full season in the minors before any realistic talk of him making the big league team starts. And I don't have a problem with that.
  13. QUOTE (scenario @ Mar 8, 2010 -> 02:40 PM) Melton. LOL. "Pierzynski hit well over .300 last year." Ummm.... Bill... AJ hit exactly .300 last year. But, hey, Melton never seems to let the facts get in the way of an interesting conversation. Melton used to be pretty solid. I guess age is making him dumber or something.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 8, 2010 -> 08:37 AM) Rarer than a guy like Jake Peavy who is going to get you wins, complete games, IP, SHO, K's and the like? Complete games, IP and SHO are rarely ever used in fantasy baseball. It's usually wins, ERA, K's, Saves and WHIP. SP is MUCH deeper from a fantasy standpoint than SS. Just think about it. After Hanley, TT, Reyes, Rollins and Jeter (the last two being overrated from a fantasy perspective), it's slim pickings at that particular position.
  15. 1 spot left guys. First come first serve. Edit: Soxtalk#2 is now full.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 6, 2010 -> 01:50 PM) Alexei over all of our starting pitchers? Wow. Not that surprising. SS is a pretty scarce position from a fantasy standpoint. Therefore making him more valuable than he really is on the field. If he can get back to his '08 level (avoiding the slow starts that's plagued him the last two years would be nice), he's probably a top 5-7 fantasy SS.
  17. All this man does is mash. That's all he's ever done at every level he's been at. Just gotta keep the fingers crossed that he stays healthy.
  18. Need just two more for the Soxtalk #2 non-keeper league. Be nice to fill it today. Draft is tomorrow at 8 PM.
  19. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Mar 6, 2010 -> 09:39 PM) i am officially sick of derrick rose's game. how can a player with his size and athleticism at his position play 42 minutes and not get a board. in the past 5 games he has averaged like 1.5 rpg per game, i didnt mind that he doesn't get steals and block if he plays acceptable defense and gets pedestrian assists, doesnt shoot threes, and doesn't draw fouls if he scores efficiently, but not getting boards when your team is desperate for it? that's no excuse even if you have 2 banged knees. for the record, he played the most minutes tonight, and was the only one failed to grab a rebound. it seems that the areas he doesn't do well outnumbers the areas he is good at, and his game has taken a step backward in every department except in scoring and "asserting more leadership" If he doesn't take a big step forward next season, i can see him being the scapegoat of the team's failure. to tell you the truth, i rather have a guy who is good all around player at the point, ie. westbrook, curry, collison, or evans, than a robotic and systematic guy like rose.
  20. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 6, 2010 -> 05:13 PM) Mitchell and Hudson are 2 guys we REALLY need to try and hang on to I think. As well as Flowers. Those would be my 3 "untouchables." Unfortunately, we have a razor thin system and the chances of landing an impact bat without including at least two of those guys is pretty much zero.
  21. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 6, 2010 -> 04:29 PM) Morel singles, 2 outs later Mitchell doubles home Morel and Gartrell singles home Mitchell 8-3 Sox. Man I can't wait to start tracking Mitchell. I think we've got a future stud. Hope to god we don't trade him.
  22. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Mar 6, 2010 -> 03:44 PM) as i laughed, they just started piling up in my mind: guzman, prior, wood, hill, choi, patterson, pie lol The hype was real with Wood and Prior. Their arms were just made of play doh.
  23. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Mar 6, 2010 -> 02:48 PM) Well I think we're a bit better than a .500 team right now. But yes, upgrading from Kotsay/Jones/Vizquel to Adrian adds a lot of wins to your team. And even with out him, IF we get into the playoffs I think we'll have a good shot to make a run cause of our rotation, you add Gonzalez, and yes I think we have a great shot to win it all. Well ultimately the main objective is to get to the postseason. Fair game after that. I still wouldn't gut the farm for a rental. That's just me.
  24. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Mar 6, 2010 -> 02:41 PM) Still... AGon really is the missing piece to make this a World Series club. We're one guy away and he's it. You really think we go from a projected .500 team to World Series contender just by adding AGON? I know he's good. Don't know if he's THAT good. We still need a bunch of guys to have bounce-back years. Division would definitely be a lock.
  25. QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Mar 6, 2010 -> 02:39 PM) If we get Adrian, we own the trophy for the next five seasons. Problem is locking him up for the next 5 seasons.
