QUOTE(jenks45monster @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 03:48 PM) My pick for most wins is MB. My pick for first to be injured is Octavio Dotel. And the Jenks thing is interesting. Saw it on ESPN yesterday, and thought it was complete BS. I guess his 40 saves and 2.77 ERA wasn't good enough for him to be in the top 5. Post your picks and explanations here. Coming from you, jenks45monster...I'm not surprised you think he should be in the top 5!!! I think it's going to be Javy...I think he's going to be a fringe Cy Young candidate. As for injuries, I think there's going to be a freak injury. Like Uribe will be at a buffet and he mistakenly eats his own arm or something like that.

QUOTE(chisoxt @ Mar 26, 2008 -> 09:16 PM) I agree with you on about every point. Kenny is a poor GM with a lifetime contract. I do not understand how most people can favor a trade for Swisher for top prospects, while many of these same people project the Sox as a .500 team at best and out of contention. At some point, your farm system will run out of players. Then what? Of all the prospects that Kenny has dealt away, who do we really regret losing? Poor GM, eh? I wouldn't say he's a poor GM, at least he has the cojones to go after people. He isn't afraid to be wrong. And when he's right, he has every right to gloat, I think. Sure, he's made some poor moves. Sure he's called out players or managers in public, but if not for Ozzie and Kenny, the White Sox would be ghosts. No one would give a crap about this team. Personally, I think it's fun to think about what Kenny could possibly have up his sleeve, even if it makes me cringe. Poor...no. Ballsy...yes. Give me Ken Williams over Bill Stoneman any day and twice on Sunday. The one thing he does is make it fun.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 26, 2008 -> 05:17 PM) I bet they're glad they traded for Garland and hung onto Ervin Santana now though. You know what they say, you can never have enough pitching. they are only happy they have Santana when they play in Anaheim.... that is horrible, tho...I hate to see anyone have possible career ending injuries.

swisher to lead off to start the season and play center

QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 26, 2008 -> 07:31 PM) This might be the only time I'll say this all year, but Ozzie isn't stupid. This means Quentin is going to start opening day in LF. The only other possibility is we'll start Uribe or Ramirez at 2nd base on opening day, and Ozuna in LF. I will now stop posting and stock up on dry goods as the end of the world is nigh.... -
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 26, 2008 -> 06:53 PM) What exactly did Ozzie lie about? It's funny...I say something, things change, and I'm not called a liar. Yet, Ozzie says something, things change, and he's called a liar. Weird.

I wonder if someone ever finished out the 1994 season...simulation style. You know, played the rest of the games and see who wins the series. That year could have saved the Expos, too, if I remember correctly, they had Pedro, Pee-Hands, Delino DeShields, Wetteland, Darrin Fletcher, Marquis Grissom, Larry Walker, Rondell White, Cliff Floyd, Wil Cordero...pretty good team at the time. Crap.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 26, 2008 -> 06:06 PM) Because the roster doesn't have room for a backup DH and 3rd baseman...we're already carrying a couple guys who can back up at each of those positions. And say what you want about going down to AAA stunting Fields's growth...sitting on the bench and DHing once a week if we're lucky would be even worse. Ahhh...the voice of reason. You can't force anyone to take Uribe or Crede if they don't want them. And for the love of god people, not directed at you Balta, but there would be a HUGE uproar over the bag of balls the Sox would've gotten for either of them. Pessimistic Soxtalk Poster: KW suxors...we got a 32 year old rookie ball pitcher that throws an 84 mph fast ball, minus-minus secondary pitches, and is a headcase! What're the Sox thinking?
-
Stuck with Uribe and Crede??? Really Steve? At worst, the Sox have them for one year. ONE YEAR. There are 3 players sitting and waiting behind Uribe that could hold down the 2B spot. There's one comparable player behind Crede. And do the Sox really want to start the service time clock on players when you have another one under contract for a year? This is a good thing to have more than one player at a position...it's called depth and the Sox haven't had it in a long time. One more thing...EVERY TEAM starts at 0-0. Tied for first, tied for last. You never know what could happen (geez, it seems like I say this every year). You think the Sox are old and slow? How about the Tigers? Maggs, I-Rod, Sheffield, Renteria is getting up there. for speed, they have Granderson and...did I mention Granderson? I remain cautiously optimistic.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 25, 2008 -> 05:36 PM) Just a few points; 1 - Crede's defense is a big upgrade on Fields' (if Joe can get back to where he was defensively pre surgery). He had a RZR over .900 last season, and Fields was much lower (check the defensive ratings thread). That will definitely help our pitching staff. 2 - There was a piece from Phil Rogers' I think saying that Fields has enough trouble catching up to 88MPH fastballs let alone 92-93 MPH ones. So if he can work on that down in Charlotte, that will help. 3 - Obviously the Sox haven't handled the situation well (again). If I had it my way, Uribe would be gone to Baltimore, Crede would have been shipped off and we use the 9.5M we save towards re-stocking the system and the draft. But because we want to "win now" they're going with the veteran guys, whether we like it or not (and whether or not it makes the most sense in the long - term). 4 - If Josh is going to K so much, he needs to start drawing more BB's at the plate. That's something he can work on while getting regular AB's. By no means is Fields a finished product. He's got so many things he still needs to work on still (and hopefully, he can improve some of these things a little before he's back up with us). He deserves better though, I won't deny that. Honestly, have you talked to McPhail? Does he want Uribe? Did he even off anything? Same with Crede. The Sox want something in particular for Crede and the Giants weren't willing to give it or don't have it. So...how exactly did they botch this situation? If I were the Giants or Dodgers, I want to see Crede do it when it counts. Or see what my own prospects can do first. Same with Uribe. Neither is a game changer, but they can be an upgrade.

QUOTE(Pants Rowland @ Mar 25, 2008 -> 05:34 PM) Yes, He would effectively have to pay some team to let him play. In all seriousness, right now he is a mystery who could still get a decent extension from the Sox but not much interest from the rest of the league considering his back and agent. However, if the Sox run him out there every day and he fails to produce, his value would be even worse than it is now, if that is believable. I am surprised Boras and the Sox have not talked about a 2-3 year deal that would keep Crede in Chicago at reasonable money in the short term and allow him to test the market when he hits his peak FA year of 31 years old. I would bet that Hahn has already done that and has been rebuked. My guess is the Sox will continue to shop Crede...someone will need a 3B by the deadline. And then the Fields era will begin.
-
QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Mar 25, 2008 -> 05:24 PM) That's not what I saw. The ball came at Rowand, hit off his head and over the left field wall for a homer. Then, Rowand shot lasers out of his eyes and melted the pitcher. He's Grindy.
-
Crede is a showcase and even if they don't or can't trade him...after this year, he gawn. You think a player can't deal with that? The Sox are NOT re-signing Crede, so if I'm Kenny, I tell Fields, "Look, we want you here, and you will be here. It may be sooner, or it may be Opening Day '09, but you will be here. So go to Charlotte, work on cutting down strikeouts, work on the routine plays and we will get you here as soon as we can." As for Quentin...he needs to gain strength in that shoulder. And Richar needs to work on strengthening his back and get back on the Sox brass good side. I can see the Sox next year as Ramirez at SS, Richar at 2B, Fields at 3B, Swisher, Owens/Anderson/Quentin, Dye in the OF.

QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Mar 25, 2008 -> 04:39 PM) I feel bad for Buehrle. He's gonna have an ugly W-L record this year with Crede/Uribe/Owens on this team. Now, I know W-L is absolutely meaningless, but if he ends up 10-14 to match a 3.60 ERA, I'll be extremely pissed. I bet Crede doesn't make it to July as a White Sox. Uribe will be benched by June and Owens will be a breakout player...with an OBP of .350. Just a hunch.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Mar 25, 2008 -> 03:27 PM) defensively? sure why not Fine, but again, Fields isn't enough of an offensive presence to justify him booting balls in LF. If he was, I'd say fine, but not yet.
-
QUOTE(daa84 @ Mar 25, 2008 -> 03:23 PM) exactly...barry bonds and manny ramirez play left field....im pretty sure with a moderate amount of seasoning in ST fields would be just fine....the brewcrew dont seem too worried about LF being to hard to braun to play Really, you guys are comparing Fields to Manny and Bonds. I don't think so.

QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 25, 2008 -> 03:21 PM) Fields got what, 2 weeks in the outfield? For a former Big 12 quarterback, I am confident he has the athletic ability to play the easiest position in all of baseball. If Carlos Lee was able to transform into a suitable defensive player, so could Fields. And we played Pods in LF, so it's not like it can get any worse. Well, then LF with Josh there for a year and in one year we've got the same problem. Crede gone, Fields at 3B and then what? I'll take Swisher and Crede for 1 year (if that) over Fields and Crede for 1 year. To me, Fields isn't a big enough talent to be out of position...he's not Miggy Cabrera.
-
QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Mar 25, 2008 -> 03:10 PM) You're extremely ignorant to think that a team like San Francisco or LA wouldn't give up a C prospect for Crede, especially now. If they haven't yet, why would they now...do they even have a C prospect that we would want? Don't you think we can get more for Crede if he can showcase himself? And there is no way I would compare Morgan Ensberg to Crede. Ensberg is crap and he never really had that great a glove. Crede, while not great in BA or OBP can still hit homeruns...he won't go 110 games without a HR like Ensberg did. And he'll still pick 'em. Again, its a crap situation, but it's the situation the Sox are presently in. And Fields in LF SUCKS!
-
QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Mar 25, 2008 -> 03:08 PM) You trade him for anything. He's had one outlier year where he produced above-average offensively and the rest have been wretched for a third baseman. Add to the fact that he rarely walks, still struggles with anything offspeed off the outside corner and is coming off of major back surgery, trading him for a C prospect makes too much sense. If you could get that.
-
QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Mar 25, 2008 -> 03:03 PM) Good to know that KW has his head lodged firmly up his ass. I'm waiting for the Masset over Wassermann selection any second now. Yeah, because we need two 3B on this team. If one of them could play another position, I could see that. And unless the Sox are within a few games at the trade deadline, Crede is gone by July 31st. If no one wants Crede now, might as well play him. What's the big damn deal...Fields will be in AAA getting ABs, playing every day and it's only 1 year...if that. It sucks, but that's the situation.

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 10:11 PM) "I got a question: if you guys know so much about women, how come you're here at like the Gas 'n Sip on a Saturday night completely alone drinking beers with no women anywhere?" By choice, man.

OK...here's the deal. She liked you and you didn't like her (and the difference between 18 and 15 is A LOT different than the difference between 22 and 18). You wouldn't want to be THAT GUY that takes your HIGH SCHOOL sophomore girlfriend to a frat party. I knew some of those guys...and, um, yikes. I agree with Hizzle...but to me it sounds like you want her because you can't have her. Y'know, just hang out with her...but you are going to have to figure one thing out...what's more important: Your friendship with this woman OR Having a serious relationship with this woman... Because it doesn't seem like you are going to be able to do both. Good luck. And I would say that there are plenty of fish in the sea, you are still young, etc. etc...but then I saw you live in Iowa....

Niners forfeit draft pick in Lance Briggs tampering
CanOfCorn replied to RME JICO's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 06:31 PM) the only thing I have seen is that they switched their 3rd rounders, i havent read that the forfeited 5h rounder has been awarded to the Bears. I asked this on Talkbears as well, what happened to the picks that the Patriots had to forfeit? Were they assigned to anyone? I know the Patriots just lost their pick...it wasn't awarded to anyone, but I didn't think that was for spying on the Jets, it thought it was just for spying period. This is direct tampering with a player on the Bears roster, that's why I thought it might go to the Bears, but I don't know. -

So, did the Bears get SF's 5th rounder? Or did they just forfeit it? -
Oh crap...Miggy Cabrera agrees to 8 more years with Tigs
CanOfCorn replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE(Disco72 @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 04:48 PM) I'm not convinced that an 8-year deal is a good idea for any player. Too many players have been good for 2, 3, 4, or even 6 years then dropped off due to laziness or injury. Given that we know he's prone to laziness (eating and exercising anyway), I'm not sure I'd be putting this one in the win column for the Tigers. It's a great PR move, and they need a young slugger to build around given the age of the rest of the lineup. I still don't think it's a great deal for them; great deal for Miggy...risky for the Tigers. And just think...in 3 years when the Tiggers have lost I-Rod and Sheffield to retirement, Maggs declining, pitching falters...it will be an undervalued contract for one of the better players in the league. The Sox will just scoop him up off the scrap heap. ///////green!!!
