QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 10:09 AM) Unless there is a play making center fielder somewhere out there I hope we stand pat. Adding a starting pitcher to an already excellent starting rotation does absolutely nothing to help this team win, when the reason we don't win (consistently) does NOT revolve around said rotation. Get us a position player who can field his position and hit some baseballs around while maybe stealing the occasional base and then we're talking. Are you look ing at 2009 or beyond? Cuz, the Peavy deal was for this year, next, next, next and maybe even next. Haren would be the same. Halladay, not so much. If Kenny can get a SP that will help the Sox for the next 3-4 years, he's going to buy if hte price's right. If not, no SP.

QUOTE (Special K @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 03:49 PM) Prior to BA being sent down, give me on single source out there in the news that said BA was complaining about his role (and no SoxTalk is not an official source). You're right, in the end it doesn't matter because neither one of them could hack it. Yet, BA clearly had more upside. He was better in every statistical category, except for SBs. Not tom mention Wise is OLD. All I want is a little accountablility towards the front office and Ozzie for making this obvious terrible decision. I do respect that Wise gives his all, there's no taking that away, but don't tell me BA didn't want to be here prior to being sent down... or that he didn't give it his all either. On the first note...I can't, so I'll back away from that comment. On the second note...I believe Ozzie pretty much said that Wise was giving his all for the White Sox while BA was giving his all for whatever team he was going to be traded to. Maybe not in those words, but pretty much that. -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 04:17 PM) Pods has been highly ineffective at stealing this year (which, along with his defense, have been his only real downsides), to the point where his even attempting it is detrimental. So on that aspect of the game, a guy who never steals, is an upgrade. If Pods needs a day off, which is probably a good thing for him occasionally, then Kotsay is not a bad choice. Looked pretty decent his last couple at bats last night. And, he's already played the Yankees 8 times this year...so hopefully, there's some familiarity there. -

QUOTE (JFields27 @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 02:58 PM) 2:56pm: Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Cubs and Pirates are discussing a deal that would send Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny to Chicago. No deal is in place and other teams remain interested in Grabow. Gorzelanny is a Oak Lawn native and graduate of Marist High School, that would be cool for him Didn't he grow up a Sox fan tho?

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 02:37 PM) Not my intention - you're jumping to conclusions, Flash. You won't find me apologizing for any of these guys. I wouldn't vote any of them into the Hall. That doesn't change the fact that when these guys gave up their pee, they were promised anonymity in the results. This is what gets me...now that some names have been leaked, might as well dump the whole thing (sorry Hammerhead, it's all or nothing in this case). And if I were the players, I would consider re-orging the MLBPA. I know Fehr is leaving/left, but I would be pissed. So what if Congress wanted the list...fight! That's what you do, you're a union. Take it to court. Cuz they had to know, once it's in government, it isn't safe. Certainly isn't a matter of National security. I say boo to baseball, the MLBPA and Congress on this one. -

QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 01:54 PM) What exactly do you think major league hitting coaches can do? The reason we don't have good hitters is because we don't have good hitters. It's called lack of talent. The good hitters like Jermaine Dye, AJ, Konerko who routinely bat at or around .300 are NOT the result of Walker? Or should Dye be hitting .350 with a better hitting coach? Does Walker get any credit for how brilliant Beckham has gone from automatic out to .300 major league hitter only 2 months into his major league career? And Scotty pods hitting near .300? What hitter has left the White Sox and Walker's terrible tutelage and gone on to great things? Players like Brian Anderson will be for their new team what they were for us...subpar ML hitters. I am not saying there isn't value in good hitting coaches, there is, but this notion that Walker is the source of all our hitting problems is laughable. These are big league hitters, THEY SHOULD ALREADY KNOW how to hit, they should understand the game by now. The hitting coach essentially is the hitters 'eyes from afar', nothing more than another viewpoint on a hitter's swing. If a player is having trouble with inside pitches, does he need a freaking coach to tell him, "why don't you try to open your stance slightly?" ... "Wow coach, I never thought of that." Some people (not you necessarily) are so out to lunch they actually believe Walker tells the hitters, 'now guys...let the pitches down the middle go by and swing at those that are in the dirt." What will make Greg Walker look like a good hitting coach is good hitters on the White Sox. Whew...that post made my head spin. Here's the thing...sometimes, a hitter might not know they are doing something, like a hitch in the swing or opening a hip. Not so much long term, but from at-bat to at-bat. This is what I would think he says... Walk: Hey, you know why you popped that pitch up? Player: Yeah, I got under it. Walk: Do you know why you were under it? Your back elbow dropped...did you think it was a sinker? Player: No, I didn't feel anything different. Walk: Yeah, I'll show you on video later. That's what I think Walk does. He will ask hitters what went wrong and why? If they know the answer...pat him on the butt and say, go get 'im next time. If they don't, show the video, work in the cages, whatever. THAT'S what I think hitting coaches do. -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 08:16 AM) That lakefront path, anywhere from downtown north, in the afternoons and evenings, is more dangerous that riding in city traffic IMO. I wouldn't go near it. 8 zillion walkers and bikers of all different speeds and not paying attention. I'd rather take the street. It works well in the very early morning though. There is a spot, just south of Fullerton that has got to be one of the most dangerous spots. It's basically just the lake, the path and some stone steps and there are CONSTANTLY kids darting across from the lake to the steps. I've been in many near crashes on my bike and when I rollerbladed. Nobody looks. I think they should make the bike path safely attached to Lake Shore Drive. Maybe have a fifth bike lane separated by barriers. Also: I've always said, Chicago is a right-of-way city. When I drive, I have the right-of-way. When I walk, Ihave the right-of-way. When I bike, I have the right-of-way. And I think most Chicagoans feel that way.

QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 10:23 PM) I don't see how Doc is gonna walk away squeaky clean. They keep saying that Diprovan is not a controlled susbstance, but I would think administering it outside of a hospital setting is illegal. The statement from Doc is something along the lines of 'Jackson was not given anything that should have killed him.' Well, Doc had only been on the job since May. From what we're now hearing, MJ had been a long time drug user. Is one month enough time to evaluate what MJ could and could not tolerate? Obviously not. Turns out the guy was deep in the hole financially, too. House to be foreclosed...deadbeat dad...yet was making $150000/month. Hmmm....

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 12:19 PM) From all reports, BA was a very liked guy in the clubhouse. That other stuff about wanting to be somewhere else was speculation by some White Sox people. Perhaps it was true, but most likely spin. I read somewhere BA and Quentin were really tight. Talk about two opposites. Maybe, but it isn't just the clubhouse. BA pissed off Ozzie for his partying ways. I believe he pissed off the organization by leaving the Venezuelan Winter League, even if it was for a good reason. Didn't seem like he listened to the coaches about batting tendencies, either. All things that would make it seem like, to me, you don't really care about being here. Or your career in general, for that matter. Shoot, you can be everybody's pal, but that doesn't mean you want to work with them.... -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 10:40 AM) Sherill is younger than Matt Thornton. BARELY. And we've gotten the best of Matt Thornton. We didn't add him at 32 AND we didn't give up a likely version of him to get him.

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 11:39 AM) Royals Acquire Josh Anderson By Tim Dierkes [July 30 at 11:36am CST] According to a press release, the Royals acquired outfielder Josh Anderson from the Tigers for cash considerations. The speedster hit .242/.282/.315 with 13 steals in 15 tries for Detroit. Wow...the Tigers gave up on him REAL fast. And basically for a bag o' balls. I wonder what they saw?

QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 11:56 AM) Anderson has the same amount of stolen bases as does Wise and despite his bad average, bad ops, bad slugging %, and bad OBP, he IS STILL BETTER than Wise. Anderson also has much bettter defensive skills. This was the dumbeset of moves. No it's not going to make or break the Sox, but I see no logic in keeping Wise over Anderson. None. Wise may be the games current worst player. Lemme ask all the BA over Wise haters this: Let's say you owned a business. There's one guy that does one thing very well, and a bunch of other things ok. This guy doesn't seem like he wants to be there. He's always b****ing and talking about how he could do better elsewhere. Then there's another guy. He doesn't do anything that well, and isn't as good as the other guy, but he tries. He's a team-first guy who will do anything you ask him to do. He takes the criticism and comes to work everyday. Which do you want? Personally, I want the guy that wants to be there and will do anything asked, no matter his limitations. Either way, it's done...BA is gone, Wise will be soon. -
QUOTE (Pumpkin Escobar @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 10:08 AM) No I said Mediocre bullpen and was citing that we had only 3-4 Starting pitchers. And they both have proven to pitch well which is why I granted us 3. and I put the dash for 4 because of how well Jose has looked. I just don't trust Contreras because we seen stretches of brilliance before. And lets face it 3 weeks ago people wanted Richard gone and Poreda in or anything so he isn't reliable yet. But I didn't mean we have 3-4 mediocre pitchers as you took it. Now onto what you said. I'm going to take exactly one part that I liked best and show you where I disagree with you. You said "we've introduced a number of younger pieces who have produced well". I agree 100%. That is exactly why you move your aging veterans for more "sure thing prospects" or much better prospects instead of hoping you make minor tweaks and "strike gold" by dealing away the prospects you just got for lesser talent (see the Giants dealing for Sanchez as an example of what I mean - if we are going to make a splash - make a big one that helps for a while). Right now would be a great time to sell off Dye/Jenks/whoever. Lose them - gain players who will make us better for next year or the future and replace them with high-caliber free agents with their money. It doesn't help propel to a division winner always either. You make it sound like we havent done minor tweaks in the past that havent worked. We made minor tweaks one time when we were already the best team in baseball so please don't use 05 as an example. Otherwise - I think minor tweaks are just that - minor. Our team is built to win a weak division, not to win a world series. And that kind of building is going to get us what we have right now. Thats a dogfight with two teams who we can't beat and a schedule much tougher then theirs. You keep mentioning the what are essentially the "ifs". Richard is throwing well - yes. Prior to that people already packed his bags to be dealt. The bullpen was doign well and now theyre struggling - right now theyre struggling. You can't gaurentee they'll turn it around in time to keep us in it. Sure they may get better in September again but we need it now. There are just too many things that need to be turned around and have go our way. I think they can - I just don't want to be sitting here August 10th, 8 games back and saying man we should've sold, got stuff for our veterans to make a bigger run next year. Thats the fear - but if we are going to go for it then I am all in. Lets see what they can do. Pumpkin...you said it yourself: 90% of the time they are better than us. That leaves 10% and that is huge. That's why we watch sports. George Mason, AZ Cardinals, the run of wild cards going to and making the WS. When you have nothing to lose because "everyone is better," sometimes you play looser. Remember the 116 win Mariners? What did they do inthe playoffs? Nuthin. Look, I'm not saying the Sox are going to win the WS...or even make the playoffs, but everyone is basically 0-0 when the playoffs start. So, go on a run and see what can happen. That being said: Giants are doing exactly what we are talking about. Trying to get into the playoffs any way they can.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 09:58 AM) That was a one in a million occurrence. With a defense as bad as ours I can't see how we'd be competitive in the post season. And we make so many bone headed plays that aren't even counted as errors. Ask any GM...get to the post-season and you never know what could happen.
