although i rarely if ever agree with him, i don't mind gottlieb. it seems like most college basketball analysts are more concerned with kissing ass than providing solid analysis. every coach is a great coach, no coach should be fired, and every kid is a good kid who plays hard. i like the fact that gottlieb is at least willing to step out and offer his honest opinion, even though it is the opinion of an asshole. -
the fact that he is in demand to speak anywhere, any time is a testament to the ignorance that pervades certain corners of this country.

it is doubtful there will be any penalties for ohio state going forward. likely they will have to take down the final four banner and give back a lot of the cash they got. but considering the already gave themselves a self-imposed postseason ban in a year they would have made the tournament, i can not imagine any sanctions going forward.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Feb 16, 2006 -> 02:15 PM) Alford looks no better in the Big Ten, career-wise. It's not all about us wanting an IU guy, it's just the results. If Alford was a little over .500 in 4 consecutive seasons, he'd be hearing all the stuff Davis is right now. i agree with you. alford has not had a distinguished college coaching career since he left mid-major world. but, timing is everything and this year alford looks like boy wonder again. if he wins the league i would have to imagine he will emerge as the front-runner. personally, i think they'd be better off looking at guys like majerus, few, gillispie or altman. hell, i'd even look into john thompson jr., although i think it's doubtful he'd leave g'town.

Ozzie article in the new Sports Illustrated

QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Feb 16, 2006 -> 02:09 PM) Yeah, it was a good read. Ozzie has really seen some f***ed up s*** in his life. I felt for him, running into the killer of his best friend. This happened during a visit to that pitcher in jail, forgetting his name. Anyway, the friend in jail asked him 'What do you want me to do?....sounded bad. Ozzie told him nothing. i think he was visiting ugueth urbina. i haven't been home in a few days so i haven't picked mine up yet. who wrote the story? -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 16, 2006 -> 05:01 AM) FINALLY! YAY! ESPN's already asking Alford about the job. Supposedly Alford has already indicated he'd be interested, but not if he has to go through a long, drawn out interview process. looks like he learned more than one thing from bob knight. anyway, at this point i'm not going to pick nits off of illinois wins. i'm past the point of expecting anything. the penn state game was a killer both in the standings and in their heads apparently. there's doubt there now. really, though, i am trying to keep perspective on all of this. yes they have looked like s*** lately, but we are not that far removed from a 15-point win at wisconsin where we played pretty damn well. that same wisconsin beat the great ohio state last night. to me, what i liked best last night was the defensive effort (and yes i realize this was a shorthanded nw team). but illinois HAS to play balls-out defense every night or they won't win crap. this team's offensive identity isn't going to change at this point. this group is just not that great offensively, and they compound that fact by not running the offense that well. at the end of the day this is what will keep them from being a great team. still, i think they can make a nice run from here on out if the defense is consistent. -
not overwhelmingly surprising. his interviews lately have given a nod to this. at the end of the day it's probably better for him, for indiana and for everyone involved. i do think davis ends up with another head coaching job. maybe uab if mike anderson gets a bigger job. it will be interesting to see who the hoosiers pursue. alford probably looks real good right now to them.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Feb 15, 2006 -> 08:44 PM) Good point. I've never really been much of a Knight guy, and I've really stood by Davis until recently. However, it was pretty foolish for him to do all those interviews on Saturday, if he was too sick to coach a basketball game. yes, this whole week's worth of interviews with him has been bizarre. -

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Feb 15, 2006 -> 08:35 PM) So if DJ White does not get injured, are we having any of these Davis discussions? i'm guessing so. really it's been a running topic ever since he took over. even when they were in the nc game half the talk was about how these were knight's guys. davis was in a no-win situation, imo, as are most coaches who follow a legend. it didn't help that right from the jump it was obvious there was a rift between knight and he. anyone on the edge was going to tip against him at that point. and clearly davis hasn't helped himself. to me the most damaging thing has been the lack of ability to keep top kids home. kids like mcroberts, oden, conley and gordon are all leaving indiana. that's a ton of talent to let walk, although i'm sure persistent talk about his tenuous future didn't help. the only criticisms of davis i can't understand are criticisms of his behavior, either on the court or in the media. no bob knight fan has any business complaining about mike davis's behavior. -
no. it always bugs me when people make farewell posts. nine times out of ten they come back anyway. i don't anticipate most people give a damn about me personally, so i doubt i'd make some dramatic message board exit any more than i'd relate a long and engrossing story about that morning's breakfast.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Feb 15, 2006 -> 06:59 PM) Is that the same RPI that was released on January 23rd? Or is that something different that they use as well? Too much going on for me right now to remember. http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=56016 that one was put out yesterday afternoon by the ncaa. it will come out each week from here until selection sunday on the ncaa.org web site. -

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Feb 13, 2006 -> 07:20 PM) There are thousands of better candidates for any sports journalist position. It's not exactly a specialized job recquiring extensive training. Sports writers and fans alike are both watching the same game, using the same statistics and quotes to create their stories. What separates them is their connections to players, and obviously, they're getting paid for their work. i don't know about all that, although as a former sports writer i'm admittedly biased. sure, could the average person with no journalism training write a game story? absolutely. it is not brain surgery. but could the average person with no journalism training write 162 game stories, features, and breaking news stories? questionable. could you write a running game story as the game is progressing for your newspaper's first edition, then head to the lockerrom get quotes and file a writethru for the second edition less than an hour after the game is completed. i don't know about that. i will never claim that sportswriting in general is a difficult job, but just like any job there's a lot that goes into it that you never see. that doesn't even begin to factor in what working a job comprised entirely of night and weekend work can do to your life. -

for the first time this year the ncaa is releasing the rpi it uses to rank teams for the tournament. these rankings will come out each week. for intents and purposes of tournament selection, this is the only rpi that matters and it directly effects the seeding process. ncaa rpi -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Feb 15, 2006 -> 02:03 AM) The Sycamores with another victim. They upset UNI by 1, Indiana State is having a huge say in the mvc race. interesting. a kid where i live is going to indiana state next year on a full basketball ride. he could be a very good player. -
we had two before our daughter was born, but that was primarily because i'm from chicago and my wife (now ex-wife) was from ohio. we did one here and one in chicago. other than that and a clear case of need, i can't see the purpose of two.

i seem to recall there being some ohio university and mac hoop fans on here. if so, this would be of interest. point guard jeremy fears of ou is transferring. he will finish the school year in athens then is returning to chicago. word out this way is that he is interested in depaul. jay bilas rated fears among the top-10 point guards in the nation in the preseason but he's struggled with the bobcat's move from a running/pressing style to a slower offensive and defensive pace. fears is from joliet. chicago hoops article -

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Feb 13, 2006 -> 08:54 PM) Fields was injured in a car accident, had to wear a halo I believe. Also Garnett was going to UNC I believe but couldnt get his ACT scores up even after trying a bunch of times. Would of been interesting with the new rule what he would of done, would a top team find a way to get him academically in, or would he have gone to a team with lesser academic standards. fields was something to see. up until i saw bill walker a few months back he was far and away the best leaper i'd ever seen. -

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Feb 13, 2006 -> 08:32 PM) I saw Garnett too, but I was like 9 at the time and all I remember was he was the really tall fast guy that kept dunking, so I couldn't count that as a good evaluation. LOL. garnett was just so skilled. at that point and time i had never seen anyone his size do the things he did. he was actually not the most physically impressive kid on his team (that was ronnie fields), but he clearly had a great understanding of what was going on on the floor. michael wright, later of arizona, was also on that team.
