They have to anticpate like Flowers yesterday running to 3rd on a GB to his right when he was on 2nd base. Clearly he didnt tell himself stay put on a GB to my right unless it goes through the hole . You're not going to score on a single to left anyway if its between SS and 3rd base. Just as there are mental errors running the bases. Imagine the miscalculations that go into every at bat. The pitcher has to think like a hitter , the hitter think like a pitcher. Where's the ball going ? What's the location? Is he going to throw me a strike or try to make me get myself out ? Fastball ? Curve , Changeup ? He has to remember tendencies by many different pitchers . The best plan starts with knowing your strengths and weaknesses and the simple fact you become a better hitter ahead in the count thereby forcing the pitcher to come to you and if he doesnt you take your walk.

But the bullpen had its injuries,visa problems , and the death of Webb's mom during spring training so I can see why they got off to a terrible start. They just didn't get the innings under their belts.
