For 1 year anything above $12M but if I were the FO i would wait and see who else we sign 1st to get a clearer picture of payroll available and see if Abreu is serious about staying with the Sox as he fields other offers. When a guy says he will be on the Sox next year no matter what or something to that effect then you have to call him on it and test it and if he signs somewhere else so be it.

Sure you can be confident on or 2 emerging all you want but when is the question ? You can't wait on the when and that's why a TOR starter is necessary now.

But having a good to very good Collins and Vaughn is very important to the rebuild and makes buying free agents much easier when holes are filled. Sox can't give up 6 years to buy expensive veterans for only a few years. They have payroll space, use it. I don't think the Sox are serious about competing next year so they might try to find a RF for a year and wait on the minor league OF's. I say they aren't serious because they are still letting guys like Castillo, Goins and Engel play a lot instead of giving AB's to Mercedes, Mendick, Collins, Robert or Madrigal. Now we can debate who is ready and who isn't among that group but it just seems to me that if they are going to wait until late April to bring up Robert and Madrigal or maybe just Robert, then it's like they don't care about having the best possible lineup out there at the beginning of the season. Wins in April count just as much as wins in September. If you want to win worrying about an extra year of control on some guys isn't really about winning asap. Maybe they still want a higher draft position and that's why the scrubs are still playing. I would think Mercedes , Mendick and Collins might be up in Sept. but not Robert and Madrigal.

Arguably JD Martinez was available or perhaps I should say he was definitely available . I know me and fathom wanted him when the Red Sox seemed to be the only ones who wanted him and signed him to a very unique contract. That was in the early stages of the rebuild however so the Sox weren't interested. Available yes , interested , no.

Don't see them moving either one. If Collins isn't the LH power bat they need, Vaughn may provide power and OBP from the right side and potential starter at 1st with a decent glove. They need some power/middle of the order hitters and cheap ones at that. They're/we're hoping Vaughn can advance through the minors quickly.

I don't think so.Sox are desperate for a LH power hitter and more OBP . He provides both. Also desperately need some DH production , someone to play backup 1st and backup catcher. He's like everything they need if he can hit ML pitching.

Appears he has made a number of changes in his approach and load/swing. There's always hope: After winning Reds Minor League player of the year honors in 2016, Aristides Aquino stalled mightily in Double-A during the next two seasons. He did slam 37 homers in 245 games at Penascola, but he batted an overall .227/.293/.421 and fell out of the Reds' Top 30 Prospects list. While Aquino had impressive raw power and arm strength, he looked doomed to become just another toolsy prospect waylaid by an inability to make quality contact. If the new Collins is real what a shot in the arm to the rebuild he would be. LH middle of the order bat with a good walk rate. Exactly what the Sox need.

James McCann went 2 for 5 including an 8th inning Grand Slam to break a 9 all tie and propel the Sox to a 13-9 victory in the rubber match of the 3 game series with the Astros. Eloy Jimenez also went 2 for 5 with a double and a solo HR, his 20th of the season. Tim Anderson went 4 for 5 with an RBI. Colome got the win with 1.2 shutout innings, Each team collected 15 hits.

Not really the type of guy contenders are looking for. In all likelihood he wouldn't make a playoff roster. Sure he's had a great run lately but he's also capable of badness. Overall just mediocre/average. But his innings pitched and health has really been valuable to the Sox this year in that he's been the glue that prevented the staff from being a bigger nightmare than it was.

He always does but then again so do I . The Sox give us a lot to be upset about but when everything bothers you to the point that you can't be objective then it becomes a problem. For example Moan can't understand why an innings eater like Nova did exactly what the Sox wanted him to do in a rebuild year and why that was needed in a rebuild year. He considered it a waste of $9M because he was too inconsistent to be traded at the deadline. 1st of all you need starters. It's been a disaster with him imagine how bad it would be without him staying healthy and having the most innings pitched on the Sox . A guy like him is the glue that kept the whole pitching staff from becoming a complete nightmare. We have seen guys like Covey, Detweiler and Despaigne with him. Who else do we see without him ? His innings and health save the pen from being a disaster also . Without him maybe there are even more injuries because of having to over pitch guys. I know the guy has knowledge but his agenda/need to complain overrules his rational mind or he just isn't as knowledgeable as I think. Guys who go out there every 5th day consistently but are just mediocre might not be worth much to contenders but on a staff like the Sox he was worth every penny.

Come on Ptatc you are better than this. We all know that they rebuilt so of course when they were losing 100 games no one was going to say that. The results speak for themselves now. Maybe the Sox can get a World Championship out of their rebuild but they are not making that easy. They same people are in charge now as when they were failing making bad draft picks, not developing talent, not recognizing talent, doing a terrible job at Free agency and making dumb trades. Can't say that about the Astros they backed up the truck, rebuild their entire system from the ground up and made a commitment to developing players. Who have they drafted that has succeeded and his still with the Sox . Anderson that's it. Who else is still to be determined and if all goes well with Vaughn and Madrigal and Cease and Kopech and Eloy and Lopez maybe they can pull it off. But there also has to be Free agents who come here and do well. So much depends on things going the right way. I'm actually an optimist and even I can see the way the Sox operate is not conducive to any kind of long term success.
