Shields / Rodon updates...
QUOTE (ptatc @ May 4, 2017 -> 06:08 AM) There really isn't that type of surgery anymore. With all of the advanced imaging, they usually have a pretty good idea of what's going on. It's usually the extant of the damage that isn't known prior to surgery. If they really thought this was an option he wouldn't be throwing at all. However, as I've said from the beginning this case is so odd that anything is possible. I've don't recall a team being so conservative with all of these "reported" injuries, especially this team with Herm running the training staff. So you think it's a lat issue. Most reports have said bicep bursitis . Could he have both or one led to the other ?

Sox taking it slow with Rodon during ST
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 4, 2017 -> 05:14 AM) That is some petty and impressive grudgeholding. I don't mind. His repeated use of "oft injured" when referring to Rodon still is inaccurate.Obviously there is what is going on currently and one other trip to the DL when he tripped on the dugout steps. If he thinks that is oft injured so be it.

5/3 Games
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2017 -> 10:38 AM) The Nats also seemed really anxious to put Giolitto into a deal and trade him over the winter too, so who knows what they know that we don't. I think the reason the media thought the Sox got the best of that deal was because the media was behind about Giolito . The Nats and the Sox were both fully aware of his struggles. Since the Sox clearly trust their pitching coaches to fix problems they couldn't pass up 3 highly thought of pitchers even if the ranking of Giolito versus the reality of him misled many at 1st.

May 3rd Game Thread: White Sox at KC Royals
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ May 3, 2017 -> 06:50 PM) We just tied a major league record for striking out in an inning. And all 4 swung at strike 3 out of the zone.

White Sox defensive shifts
Entering Wednesday the Sox bullpen is also leading the league with a 1.88 ERA while the White Sox as a team have given up the fewest runs in the majors . Anthony Swarzak is leading the league in most innings pitched (13.1 )without allowing an earned run. He also has a BAA of .073 and a WHIP of 0.30 Nate Jones hasn't allowed a run in his last 7 appearances while K'ing 13 .

Adam Dunn was just terrible on the Sox
QUOTE (Dizzy Sox @ May 3, 2017 -> 01:53 PM) Useless/stupid trivia question to keep this timely thread alive...Adam Dunn had a bit part in the in the movie Dallas Buyers Club. Anyone remember who was the last Sox player to appear in a major Hollywood movie prior to that? (Or at least the last one I can remember?) Ken Berry was in Eight Men Out.

White Sox WInner
8 shutout innings for Jose Quintana, aka the Feathered Serpent. He gave up 4 hits, K'ed 7 and walked 2. The Sox offense even scored runs for him. Winner winner chicken dinner, 6-0 Sox over Royals.

Eaton to Nats/Giolito, Lopez, Dunning to Sox
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 29, 2017 -> 05:43 PM) And that's why Robbie Cano jogs to first on occasion. I'm only half serious but Eaton is a 100% max effort guy and because of that he was always more of an injury risk than your average player. I feel badly for him but on the other hand it's not like you didn't see it coming, in one way or another. I look at Avi the same way. He looks a little bit foot twisted when he hits 1st base some times.

Tim Anderson's Defense
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 30, 2017 -> 01:03 PM) We know he is capable of being good, he has just gotten back to some bad habits, one handed plays, throwing off one foot when it isn't necessary...he will put in the time to correct it. This is what young players, u less they are superstars do. Eventually, they all struggle, and his defense was so much better than advertised, he may have either slacked a bit with it, or wanted everything to always look spectacular He has been overall awful defensively, but has made many spectacular plays. IMO, he just needs to get back to basics, and not try to do too much. Make simple plays look simple. Statcast had Ttim running 50 yards at 10 yards per second on that pop up. That's 10.0 seconds in a 100 yd dash while looking up tracking a pop up.

Hawk Sounds Melancholy
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Apr 30, 2017 -> 11:23 AM) He had lunch with Joe DiMaggio and maybe Babe Ruth. He has just been around a long time Unless Hawk had lunch with Babe Ruth between the age of birth and 6 years old years old I sort of doubt it since Babe died in 1947 and Hawk was born in 1941.

April 30th Game Thread: White Sox at Detroit Tigers
QUOTE (Scoots @ Apr 30, 2017 -> 12:08 PM) Reminds me of Abreu last year...you just know he is gonna swing at that slider outside, even if it starts outside of thr zone. That shows me that Anderson is over thinking up there. See ball hit ball. See ball hit ball is an oversimplification at any level and especially so at the pro level. The game between hitter and pitcher is a chess match. The stuff that pitchers possess is impossible to process just by reaction time alone. Even knowing their arsenal is not enough for even the best hitters with the quickest reactions to succeed barely more than 3 of 10 times, Every pitch has a purpose to the ones following it, If a hitter cannot think like a pitcher his chance of success is dismally low. You may be over matched by your eye hand coordination alone or your lack of less than perfect vision . Only with sound mind and body do the best become the best and even they have their struggles and failures . Baseball is not only for those physically gifted but the willingness to endure those struggles and failures . Baseball is a thinking and patient man's game .

April 29th Game Thread: White Sox at Detroit
QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Apr 29, 2017 -> 04:17 PM) If the Yankees keep this up we might get a good offer for Q Minus Aaron Judge of course who many around here didn't want. He has a Derek Jeteresque media presence about him. Long way to go of course to establish himself but off to a blazing start.

New Banner
Put a few Japanese symbols on the banner. Why you may ask? Every time I hear Hawk say his full name it sounds like Kodiashii .

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner
The weirdness of the season continues, Abreu 1st HR ,Melky 1st HR , Victor Martinez 1st HR, Robertson's 1st blown save yet 1st win just a couple days before May.

Your 1st Place Chicago White Sox
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Apr 28, 2017 -> 08:57 PM) doing with 4 pitchers on the DL. The depth of this pen should keep it from being overworked. What depth ? Without Petricka and Putnam, and Covey and Pelfrey in the rotation , Swarzak, Jennings Jones and Kahnle won't last much longer unless Ynoa can step up and Beck becomes something less than the black hole he has always been. The Sox aren't a good offense and even the slightest hiccup in the pen eliminates wins.

Your 1st Place Chicago White Sox
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 28, 2017 -> 08:42 PM) Love it. Keep it up boys!!! It stood out to me during spring training, just how much of an upgrade Renteria was. He just has this "it" feel as as mgr., especially when compared to Robin. You could hear him all over the diamond during spring and just see the "passion" for the game and managing at all times. Focus on fundamentals, etc. This won't keep up, but its great to see, and you just never know. We have other young players who are going to come up at different points and if Avi can keep mashing, awesome. I know people have pointed out a lot of Avi's stats look "fluky", but he is crushing the ball and he's drastically changed is "pull" ratio and that was a huge weakness of is (inability to hit the inside pitch). What he used to struggle with, he is now hammering, so even if his swing percentages, etc., are unchanged, statistically he is pulling the ball more and is hitting it harder when he does "pull" it. As a keen observer of Avi who doesn't rely on advanced metrics it looks to me as if he's not getting pitched too as much inside. He used to swing at a lot of balls inside on his hands . He pulled 2 balls tonight and got 2 hits because they were well placed but not hit hard. One was a dribbler up the 3rd base line and the other was just a bouncer up the line that Castellanos got to deep behind the bag. He beat both out with his speed and hustle. I think he is just hitting bad pitching. Pitchers now should go up and in on him and back him off the plate then go down and away. The bomb he hit today was up but out over the plate.

Your 1st Place Chicago White Sox
QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Apr 28, 2017 -> 08:20 PM) Who the hell is this team??? Gotta admit I'm loving this so far. You got to love it. However the bullpen will need reinforcements soon if Covey and Pelfrey can't go 5 innings and Petricka and Putnam are out much longer. It might be sustainable under different circumstances but overwork will lead to fatigue and fatigue will lead to meltdowns.

Fangraphs Article About Tommy Kahnle
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 28, 2017 -> 02:15 PM) Right. It was definitely a bit tongue in cheek just to say how awesome Kahnle has been so far. Rack up another good inning for Mr. K tonight .
