  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 07:35 PM) An underrated aspect about acquiring Samardzija is that he's a huge name in the Chicagoland area, and he's someone that I think fans would go out to watch pitch (oh great, more ND fans at Sox games) Hey nothing wrong with that. Gotta remember when the original Mayor Richard J Daley was around being Irish in Chicago was a huge deal and the middle class (basically a ton of south side White Sox fan city workers ) looked to ND as the symbol of having their children do better than they did. Those city workers are all retired now but their children went to college and were the original Yuppies and inherited their love of the Sox.
  2. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 12:18 PM) Oh my god yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Go clean up .
  3. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 12:05 PM) They are similar offensive players but I will take age 31 ,32 seasons over age 36,37 seasons plus money saved over the 2 years. Having Moss would've also meant we are officially done with Viciedo . Edit : You also used LaRoches' last 3 seasons of OPS but used Moss last 2 then one from 2009 when he was 25 and had 385 AB's had a .304 OBP and .668 OPS instead of his age 28 season when he was clearly a much improved hitter who had a .358 OBP and .954 OPS because he only had 265 AB's.
  4. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 12:03 PM) We could have used them both, though, I think. True but Rabbit originally said he would have liked Moss more than LaRoche so thats what we were discussing, Moss vs. LaRoche .
  5. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 11:57 AM) I like LaRoche better. Moss has really only had 3 full seasons for various reasons with OPS at 668,859 and 772. LaRoche has many more seasons and his last 3 were 853, 735 and 817. For the next 2 years I like LaRoche better. They are similar offensive players but I will take age 31 ,32 seasons over age 36,37 seasons plus money saved over the 2 years. Having Moss would've also meant we are officially done with Viciedo .
  6. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 11:35 AM) Decent prospects don't typically amount to much in the MLB. I really haven't seen anything that really makes me think the sox will miss Semien or Sanchez compared to a proven MLB pitcher. They could be decent bench players or a starter in the Beckham mold, but I think those players would be worth the chance of getting JS long term. Besides as I've said I think Rameirez is going to be the center piece of any trade. The A's really don't need Semien or Sanchez. They have better utility/borderline starting prospects. Really the only place we are differing is I don't think the Sox get Shark long term. Guess we'll have to wait how it all plays out. Again.
  7. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 11:08 AM) Well I don't But really, I just want it resolved so we can figure out how the A's take way too much from the White Sox again while they seemingly give away guys like Donaldson and Moss to the opposition for jacksquat. Hey if the Sox do lose Semien ,which you would be upset about ,how would you feel if the Sox re-signed Gordon Beckham as Semien's replacemnt ? After all Gordon hit lefties for a .293 BA last year and might even play a better 3rd base than Marcus
  8. QUOTE (daggins @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 11:10 AM) No go on Minoso Sigh Sucks.
  9. That was exactly the position I took in the Moss thread.
  10. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 11:05 AM) No, but if you have the opportunity to acquire a really good dependable starting pitcher, he is worth more than all of those utility players. He will not only produce more but also save the team from over using the lower end of the bullpen. McCarthy, even if healthy will tax the bullpen. You don't give up the farm for JS but you do what you can to acquire him. I'm all for a guy like Shark but not for 1 year. Giving up 2 decent prospects is like 10 yrs or more of control for 1 yr. and JS would have to be extremely good to outproduce productive bench players who might even eventually be starters that you control for a much longer period of time and McCarthy.
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 11:01 AM) The more I think about it, the more I'd be perfectly content trading Ramirez for Samardzija, but that doesn't seem like the kind of move the Sox would make. Frankly, I want this situation to be resolved so I can move on. Sounds like you don't want a divorce from Marcus.
  12. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 10:45 AM) I think I'm mostly upset in this in that the Sox finally get a guy to the majors who looks like he could be a very nice player and the first thing they do is trade him for a starting pitcher who is about to get expensive as hell. Question WAR all you want to, but Brian Dozier hit .242/.345/.416, played mediocre defense, and stole 20 bases at a 75% clip and he was just worth 4.6 WAR this past season. That means, if nothing else, that he was a very good player for the Minnesota Twins. If Marcus Semien hit .230/.310/.390, stole 15 bases, hit 15 homers, and played mediocre defense, he'd probably be worth 1.5-2 WAR and that could easily improve to the point where he was worth 3+ WAR or more. I think we are underrating depth quite a bit, and Semien provides a ton of that for the current version of the Sox. Losing him would be very significant. I have been advocating increasing the talent level also. Having 2 or 3 1.5-2.0 WAR utility players adds great value to a team knowing that in case of injury you have quality back ups. Every trade does not have to be a blockbuster. McCarthy would be just fine ,if we could get him, while we see how Rodon , Bassit, etc. develop . The Sox may want to compete this year but it shouldn't be at the expense of finding out what our very inexpensive prospects will become.
  13. QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 10:30 AM) Jesus Christ. I would have loved Moss for Carlos Sanchez or Michalczewski instead of signing LaRoche. My god. It just sucks this horrible move by the A's makes a rival so much better. Moss is a great pick up for Cleveland. Yet Beane is playing hardball with us. At least that's the feeling I get. Same power as LaRoche 5 years younger. Plays the outfield which is more important than a backup 1st baseman. Probably would've saved more than $10M over the next 2 yrs LaRoche will be signed at an advanced baseball age. Takes a lot of walks also like LaRoche does. Moss eligible for free agency in 2017 so same time LaRoche contract ends.
  14. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 09:29 AM) I dont buy that at all. The Sox are in on him for longer term than that. I just meant that most tweets and articles from big name writers expect Jeff S. to test free agency and it would shock them all if the Sox locked him up. It would shock me also I must admit.
  15. QUOTE (whtsoxfan @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 09:35 AM) You mean Thursday December 11 , Tuesday us the 9th OK then maybe thats not a current page because I got that straight from the article maybe the documentary was from 2012? Never mind about stickying it then. But the video's are still interesting as is this http://chicagosidesports.com/36-years-with-minnie-minoso/ and this from SSS with even more links at the bottom about Minoso http://www.southsidesox.com/2012/12/11/375...ing-remembering
  16. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 09:05 AM) I don't think MLB Network streams their broadcasts online. He may be talking about more, umm, unconventional methods.
  17. QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 6, 2014 -> 06:05 PM) Golden Era Committee vote is tomorrow. The announcement is Monday. Here's hoping those voting get a good night sleep and do the right thing. If Minnie Minoso doesn't get it in, it would be a damn shame. This needs to stay near the top of the front page at least for today since the vote is today. Not enough current Sox fans can relate to Minoso they way they should like Cubs fans can relate and cherish Ernie Banks. Yes I know Minnie was a notch below Banks in talent and certainly in exposure to the public eye. If you want to learn more about Minoso here's a link with a few short videos about him on it. There's no date on the page but it must be pretty recent because it says the the Minoso documentary will air on WTTW/Channel 11 in Chicago on Tuesday, December 11 from 10 to 11 pm. I think the date and time of the docomentary should be stickied Edit: I'd feel silly if that date was for 2013. Someone must know. OK I feel sillier now . Probably from 2012. As Roseanne Rosannadanna used to say . "OH Nevermind".
  18. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 06:30 AM) Okay so be ready to call me out. I have long been a draft pick defender and advocate of not signing players with QO's attached. I'm still not advocating doing so but pondering a strategy. If the Sox sign David Robertson and give up their 2nd round pick, would it benefit to dip back into free agency this year for another QO free agent? If they were to sign two players with QO's, they would be giving up their 2nd and 3rd round picks. While just writing that statement makes me cringe a little bit, does it make sense to do it at this point? I was saying that weeks ago in the VMart thread. With the salary room and protected 1st rounder I was pretty sure this was the year the Sox would sign some free agents more than they would make trades . The fact they have very little talent to actually trade also played a big role in my thinking. But if you look through that thread again I was told many times the Sox weren't close enough to contention yet. I have followed the Sox and baseball for many years and have learned a few things along the way. When everything is telling you the time is now, it usually is.
  19. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 05:09 AM) I certainly hope he is extended right away if they trade for Samardzija. It'll be interesting to see what happens this week. If Sox lock up Shark long term it would shock the baseball world. That's how unlikely it is.
  20. Cartlos Sanchez isn't doing well (batting in the .190's ) Avi Garcia is hitting well but high K rate (29 K's 107 AB's )
  21. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 05:54 AM) We'll do a review after the season. For now... Dan Black and Leury Garcia are kicking ass for their respective teams. Nieto is also doing very well. Here is a link to how every Sox player in every winter or fall league has done : http://mlb.mlb.com/milb/stats/org.jsp?id=cws
  22. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Dec 7, 2014 -> 12:02 PM) Sources lol. What a wonderful country the USA is. Americans are very lucky human beings is what this tells me Who is telling you Americans are so lucky ? Source ?
  23. QUOTE (midway @ Dec 6, 2014 -> 05:32 PM) I've been waiting to see what happens with this kid, seeing if other teams would be willing to take a chance with him. But now, after reading the link here there is no way I would want any part of this kid's drama and his agent is Boras...no thanks!!! There's always Asdrubal Cabrera.
  24. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 03:20 AM) OT: Canadiens legend Jean Beliveau dead at 83. Gordie Howe is probably next in line. Not doing well at all. Beliveau was pure class. He was hockey's Stan Musial.
  25. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 05:44 AM) Russell is one of the top 5 prospects in baseball. He was a top 10 prospect in the game when he was traded last year. That was a really bad trade last year. Where is Anderson in the top 100 ? I think he'll have a huge year in AA Birmingham and be near top 10 status soon after. Lillian did you say he had a weak arm ? The Kiley McDaniel in depth review of the top Sox prospects says he has a plus arm and a shockling low amount of problems for a guy his age. New top 100 lists come out in February so I guess we'll see how he ranks then.
