  1. QUOTE (hi8is @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 12:22 PM) Wtf Shouldn't be that surprising, he's not a velo guy and he's returning from another injury.
  2. Yeah Eric Longenhagen is also touring the instructs but his white sox tidbits weren't interesting at all. Basically clarkin barely touches 90 and Collins hit a homer.
  3. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 09:04 AM) This "Tillerson called Trump a moron" story should go over well "If my people ever talked about me the way they were talking about Hillary"
  4. Read through the end for tidbits here too: "White Sox righthander Hunter Kiel—an 18th-rounder of out of Louisiana State—showed a mid-90s fastball and a hard, mid-80s slider in his inning. Read more at http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/coll...Aop465.99" A hunter kiel tidbit that doesn't say he walked 10 batters and gave up 20 runs! ANd rather than triple digit, saying he's throwing mid-90s with a mid-80s slider. Are the sox beginning to get this kid closer to a pitcher? Could be an interesting bullpen prospect if so.
  5. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 10:18 AM) Yeah, I think they have to go up-the-middle talent with the first pick. I think as of right now there are three premium up-the-middle talents at the top of the draft with Turang, De Sedas, and Kelenic. There doesn't seem to be any up-the-middle college guys that could go that high right now, but I was listeing to the BA podcast and they made the point that usually high school players are generally ranked as high as they are going to get after the summer, while college guys tend to rise during the season. So I would not be suprised if the Sox were on those three right now, and wait and see which college guys pop up during the year. Past few years seems like there has been a disconnect with the Draft writers rising college talent up the boards and the actual draft picks. Think Kyle Wright, whose strong finish had writers putting him in 1-1 conversation. McKay too. I think the writers see the college kids more and have a slight (not big) disconnect on how the teams are valuing the HS kids.
  6. I was intrigued by this idea on an Avi swap, but I'm out. This guy could easily turn into an Albert Pujols in his 30s situation.
  7. QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 04:08 PM) Interesting topic.. If we do a draft we will get less good players coming.. Abreu, Cespedes, Moncada, Otani, aand others wouldn't come if they were just going to get the 1st overall pick money.. It's interesting. I'd love a draft but if they do that I think you lose out on lots of top talent.. I don't think it's a hard choice. Stay in poverty against weak competition or go and make $5 million dollars with the possibility of $100 million in my lifetime and get to play with the best competition in the world. Japan would be the only real competition.
  8. QUOTE (oldsox @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 04:00 PM) How does the Player's Union feel about that? Players union will always screw over non members if it means more perks for actual players. It makes sense, but frankly the amount of restrictions they put on signings in the last CBA isn't significantly different than a draft, possibly even worse, when you talk about the money flow to intl players.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 02:53 PM) edit: i'm deleting the quoted post. I wouldn't have guessed that. I always kinda believed we'd end up with less than we thought, but I definitely would have guessed in July of last year we'd end up with 4-5 can't miss up the middle players. End up like Cubs with a bunch of players that can play everywhere. But, part of this is also benchmarking sox moves to others. We had the best assets, but we also moved early and got the best packages from the teams that could offer them before serious plan Bs came to the market. That's the part I really respect. If I didn't have that info and you straight up just told me the packages we got in July 2016? I'd be nervous.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 02:37 PM) Sure. And then the marketplace dictated otherwise. I mean I would have loved their entire top 10 for Sale, but that wasn't out there, so you can't call it "fair". Out of curiosity considering your reaction after Eaton trade was there a move that turned you around on the rebuild?
  11. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 01:14 PM) The Cubs got their man and if they win it all again FFF but it really seems like nobody else was in the same ballpark, offering up anything close to Jimenez. Honestly I'd have been happy with Eloy for Q straight up based on how Eloy performed in the 2n d half. Acuna will probably be #1 overall but Eloy will be a no doubt top #5 preseason and is probably the best pure hitting prospect in baseball. Spring training will be a lot of fun this year. The one part that I always consider, is teams may not want to let out to important young players they were on trading block when it didn't happen. I could easily see the issue being Brinson was being offered and the holdup was Bader as #2, and that's why we went with Jimenez/cease filler

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 12:25 PM) this has a very sad update: http://www.dailybreeze.com/2017/10/02/fami...nd-shot-in-jaw/ sitting at work fighting back tears at this. So so sad.
  13. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 11:59 AM) What other team(s) were rumored to be in on Q? Weren't the Brewers heavily involved? The hangup was Josh Hader? https://www.brewcrewball.com/2017/9/25/1636...ukee-per-report Huh, well I'm glad the Sox held out because Eloy is >>>>>>> than any return the Brew Crew could have given the Sox -- at least once Eloy went into "holy s***" mode post trade. That paragraph in there is nuts "even had they included Brinson or Ortiz". So it was a package without Brinson Ortiz or Hader? The Quintana trade was by far the best of the rebuild considering the other offers that were rumored.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 07:42 AM) Jesus. Thoughts and prayers going out to all the victims. This is just inconceivable. EDIT: Matt, is his girlfriend missing too? Seeing stuff on Twitter now about that. this has a very sad update: http://www.dailybreeze.com/2017/10/02/fami...nd-shot-in-jaw/
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:10 AM) Re: the stuff in the middle. Counting the fact that the White Sox were drafting in the top 10 again and weren't giving up any draft picks to sign guys...I think there was also a "Where would they play" factor. Our lower minors are heavy right now on position players we just drafted and guys we traded for. The only real place where we actually had room to play guys is at the AAA/AAAA level, and that's where Hahn started grabbing guys in those minor league deals. The low-minors the next 2 years should be still pretty full counting guys from the last 2 drafts. But the thing is we've drafted heavily college players the last 2 years.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:37 AM) So I actually went back and searched the previous case. The Red Sox prospects did count against the international caps when signing with their new teams. I am not sure if playing in the US makes any difference or not as the most important thing is that neither player would have been union represented at the time of their release, so I don't know if Maitan playing in the US will make a difference or not. http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/sports/...om-Boston-.html If this is the case then my guess would be whomever is the runner up to otani.
  17. If we are resigned to baby steps, here are my baby steps: - Allow full collection of data on gun violence and prioritize studies on causes and possible solutions (which will be marginal) for violence in america. It is clear we are unique in the developed world for this problem, yet we are not allowed to study it. - Law that allows for revocation of firearms from people who fall under the federal restrictions of Purchasing a firearm. So that not only can they not buy future weapons. This can be done a number of ways, PA requires they sell the weapons by 60 days, MA requires they turn them in. - Expand federal law to restrict gun purchases to those with gun related misdemeanors - Expand definition of mental health to those voluntarily committed - require identify individuals whom access to guns is restricted via federal guidelines - please just some thoughtful restriction on powerful weapons, modificiations and bullets that allow ongoing regulation similar to FDA approval so there aren't loopholes so easily applied. None of this will happen.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 09:59 AM) I am sure this is the case for most mass killers like this. They want the fame and notoriety. You just know there is someone out there right now thinking they want to break the record that was set in Las Vegas. It sucks to think about but it is reality. I wish the media would stop showing his face and saying his name because that is exactly what he wanted. Right, and especially after so many of these. These people aren't interesting. They are failures that decided to take out their problems on wonderful people with a gun. There were no breaking points, there's no interesting back story. Just decided to do a terrible thing.
  19. Yeah I do think starters is the 6 for $68 deal of Abreu.
  20. I gave a 9 too (I think). Some thoughts: With others on the Yankees trade. I really liked many of the yankees 8-14 prospects (some used to acquire Sonny Gray) that going after the bigger fish of Rutherford at expense of pretty meh backend guys didn't do it for me. However, I'm not writing Rutherford off. He needs to make a big jump next year though. The other trades like Swarzak for Cordell, Jennings for Gillaspie, it's weird for me to say I didn't like them. I did. Sox seemed to like going after the players that struggled or were blocked just befor emajors. But, they weren't the player type I wanted. I was hoping to get some 18-19 year old big arms with big flaws, some big athletes but little polish. Sort of like what Preller was doing. I don't think they were bad trades, I think we may very well get actual major league production from them. But we are going to see this group of college players graduate to double A soon next year and we'll see a massive gulf of nothing behind them unless our LatAm signings begin to pay off. Lost in all this was Robert. Who, because we stashed him for taxes, I sort of forget how exciting he is. Can't wait for him to be stateside.

The magnitude of this, nearly 600 people it's just staggering and hard to comprehend. People just going out to have a good time, celebrate with friends and family. The pain of this is just enormous.
  22. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 08:54 AM) How does this work with a 17-year old free agent? It makes sense with draft picks and when international free agents come over as amateurs since the amount of money is just a bonus but I'm not sure how this works here. Say if he signs the same deal Soler signed: does that go in effect right away or when he comes up in 3-4 years? The benefit to Maitan is it does not need to be the same bonus structure, so people could spread cost out more easily. There's just going to be very little constraints on teams. I couldn't even put a number on it. I'd say at very least we are past jose abreu territory.
  23. I wonder where Ramey goes
  24. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 07:57 PM) I would think this doesn't happen and instead they lose future rights. Seems odd just to null and void a particular player's agreement. That said, as long as the player ultimately benefits (and gets more money...which in this case he presumably would), I could see it working. If he's a free agent (and unrestricted), I would think it is pretty unlikely Sox win the bidding, but I would be a proponent in taking the chance (given our current lack of payroll). Given his age, handing out mega bucks is pretty risky as well (lots can go wrong from 17 until you reach the big leagues). No denying his potential though. With the Red Sox players, they were released from their contract from MLB but still were paid full amount from contract
  25. Great writeup https://sports.yahoo.com/john-coppolellas-r...-230643724.html Gotta say, today made me think twice about our LatAm performance last few years. If it was this dirty, Sox coming off wilder may have felt need to be extra clean and could have been at big disadvantage dealing with buscones.
