2015-2016 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 11:36 AM) I figure that is the approach but I don't know that Hoiberg gets a pass after this year. He'll officially be on the hot seat in year two. I just haven't seen anything from him that makes me think he's a good coach at this point. He isn't able to hold people accountable and while Gar deserves blame I don't ignore / not put blame on Hoiberg. He is letting the inmates run the asylum. I don't really think much of Hoiberg as a coach if we need to trade our best player to fit his system.

Tyler Cowen Article on differences
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 11:44 AM) There are some interesting thoughts in there, but he seems to be over-pathologizing and the basis for some of his statements/conclusions seem pretty questionable. This seems to leave "academics" as a group without agency and with no political concerns beyond some narcissistic desires. Also, I'm left wondering what exactly that last sentence is referring to. What were Democrats delusional about in the 70's and 80's? The support for this is a link to a blaze.com article about a survey from www.247wallst.com from 5 1/2 years ago. You can find their latest survey fairly easily here. As they note in their explanations, this is a very difficult thing to even measure, and not everything is directly driven by governmental policy choices (North Dakota has been leading their surveys for several years, but that's entirely thanks to the oil extraction boom). For example, California was 49th in the 2012 survey linked by Cowen; it was 21st in the 2015 survey. California was one of the most heavily impacted states from the housing market collapse, and so you see a larger swing. In the most recent survey, 4 out of the top ten states as ranked by www.247wallst.com are run by Democrats compared to 2 of 10 in the dated survey Cowen linked. He also ends by declaring a push for a $15 minimum wage to be signs of delusion, so edit: I used to read MR off and on, but for whatever reason there's a pretty strong "race realist" contingent there in the comments section. Really off-putting. Yes, the comments are horrible, but I haven't seen a good comment section since Ta-Nehisi coates blog, which obviously was so difficult to manage it basically ended the blog.

Really off-putting. It's difficult to measure, especially when talking about the quagmire democratic states are largely rustbelt states that are losing population/jobs. But then you have Minnesota. I think it hits on the point though of how could the Dems be so strong nationally and so weak currently at state level, and that would be the "elevation" of a status group within the coalition at a state level. Easy for people to think of well run Republican states and think of Texas/Utah, but the gulf states/lower midwest are there too. Massachusetts/MN have high outcomes. However, it helps explain how these states that are so blue that are getting killed at governor elections.

Adam Eaton "Racial" Tweet Controversy
QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 11:14 AM) Creed seemed to do pretty well for a sports movie. Yeah boxing movies seem to do well, but they also are kind of an outlier in how accomplished directors take on boxing movies. The 1 on 1 aspect and the training journey is ripe with material. It's also just a lot easier to film then a football play.

2016 Republican Thread
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 11:09 AM) Cruz had a strong enough showing that he has the card that if the establishment wants to go anti trump, it has to be either him or Kasich. Rubio is toast. Crushed in his own state. He needs to walk away and realize he'll have another shot 4 years from now (because I don't see Trump winning the white house and while Cruz has a better chance, I don't see that either; Kasich or Rubio could win but that doens't appear to matter). I guess if all of them stay in, maybe it keeps the delegate count low enough that you get to a brokered convention and at that point, all bets are off (that said, by that point, the republican party will be so splintered, it would be hard to actually rally behind whomever is truly selected (and I'm sure if Trump loses he'd go independent). Florida hasn't happened yet.

Adam Eaton "Racial" Tweet Controversy
QUOTE (LDF @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 07:24 PM) this is in ref to movie-goers and racially motivated or not racially motivated moves. i am talking about one movie recently release. The Race the story of jesse owens. this movie is great but yet it hasn't even made 15 mil in the US or overseas. why is that??? this is history and of a great athlete and his going to the olympics before the WW2. why so little attendance ??? not enuf white people in the movies ?? then why is the african americans not supporting it ??? 15 million it has made in 3 weeks. Sports movies as a whole are a dying breed, I think likely because the 30 for 30 format is largely feeding that audience. Watching crappy movie recreations of sports moments aren't holding up to actually watching the footage with context added by those who were there. Had Rush come out 10 years earlier, probably does much better. Miracle was the last sports movie I remember anyone seeing en masse.

2016 Ticket Pre-Sale - Wed 3/2-Thurs 3/3. General Onsale 3/4
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 10:28 AM) I'm going to go to that as well. I'd rather go to the Saturday Game because it's probably a Chris Sale start. Didn't realize that. I am on a 2 week vacation prior to that, didn't want to take off another day at work so soon.

Delegate Math and the GOP
The GOP is unlikely going to deal with a brokered convention. Think about how long elections are now, they aren't going to want to only introduce their candidate 3 months before election before focusing their message. Trump and Cruz have already shown ability to play nice. Eventually the GOP will fall in line. Rubio will drop out after FLA.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 07:18 PM) I was in 9th all year until the 2nd half of the year. I had Harvey and Kluber the 1st half until I traded them. It's an auction league and sign them to contracts. Read my leagues rules on the last page. Got it. That's insane and hard.

2015-2016 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Chi Town Sox @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 03:43 PM) I just think it was a weird fit, personally. Harden is the ballhandler there Right. I thought he would just run a 2nd unit and increase the leads the way the bench mob used to do in Chicago. He may go look to be a starter but I'd enjoy seeing him signed as an experiment. Couldn't hurt.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 01:26 PM) Ty Lawson getting bought out. Wouldn't mind the Bulls picking him up to see if he's truly terrible or if he was just terrible for Houston. Can't be worse than what we have. I think.

I don't understand how your keepers is an entire roster but you still say there will be top 20 pitching talent.

My blue jays fan friend was shocked when we were moving lawrie off third. He said the best parts about him were quick reactions and his arm. But I don't know how that plays at 2nd with the needed range.

**2016 Films Thread**
I think Mad Max was actually one of the best storytelling movies I've seen in a long time. And I mean that in how the actual filmmaking was telling the story, as opposed to a screenplay and dialogue. The pace was right on. This year we saw filmmakers do an incredible job of keeping their stories moving. Spotlight took an incredibly difficult story to tell, that goes off the rails in so many "serious movies", and was pitch perfect. Same with Big Short. But I don't think those were any more difficult to make than Mad Max. At this point, safe to assume almost all of its audience was familiar but probably hadn't seen Mad Max originals. He set up the backstory with minimal drag, and jumped right into it. I think the "Then who killed the world" line was one of the best in the movies. Looking back, this year with Creed, Big Short, Spotlight, Mad Max and star wars, had to be one of my favorite years in a while. November/December especially.

Our Defense is Still Bad
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 10:10 AM) The most depressing thing he said, IMO, was a tidbit last week that didn't seem to jump out to anyone -- when talking about attendance, he said something like "the payroll figure is going to stay the same, so it didn't hurt us there." That, if true, means they do not intend to sign anyone of significance. Which, coupled with the fact that they added literally zero significant free agent salary this year, makes me think that the "big fish" were only ever going to be limited exceptions, and that Hahn was not actually working with much of any budget room to begin with. Frazier's salary is significant, but it was offset by losing Samardzija's. The catcher platoon adds up, but it's less than what they lost in Alexei. The directive of "turn your 75 win team into a contender without adding any net salary whatsoever" just does not seem like a sound line of thought to me. Right. I was fooled, but was right all along. I still think this team is much faster to a playoff birth had we sold this offseason than bought.

Chris Nolan should watch Mad Max over and over again for how to build a unique world without just explaining the rules of the world for 4 hours.
