Sox Sign Jose Abreu - 6/$68 million
QUOTE (HeGone7 @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 10:09 PM) Highly doubt the A's are in on him. You'll have to take my word for it, but Billy Beane has a daughter who lives in Chicago and dates a friend. Billy isn't very fond of Cespedes, so I can't imagine another high-priced, free swinging, Cuban is on his way to Oakland. Take it for what it's worth, but I am not so sure the A's will be rushing to the front of the line to pay big bucks for this guy. Does she play guitar and sing your friend sweetly pop songs?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 07:31 PM) There's a lot of random electric vehicle chargers, but the Tesla "Supercharger" is a much-higher-amperage charger only for Tesla vehicles. Yeah, I thought it was branded but I may have just projected.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 07:37 PM) Also the article notes that his obp is inflated by leading the league in intentional walks and HBPs. Still though even if you subtract those his obp would still be pretty high. That's what I imagined, thanks.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 07:14 PM) Tesla has a map of their current "Superchargers" as well as their planned roll out available here. http://www.teslamotors.com/supercharger I thought there were some already in Chicago, but apparently the only one in Illinois is down in Normal. Probably in conjunction with the university. 200 miles in 30 minutes isn't really in the road-trip range yet, but that's still pretty impressive. You could stop for lunch on a long-ish drive and charge your car back to full for free. I could have sworn there was one at the walgreens parking lot on diversey and california.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (farmteam @ Aug 10, 2013 -> 02:27 AM) I haven't heard this before. Just among millennials, or across all groups? I'd have to find the graph again, b/c i'm not sure if it was a dynamic graph on "actually using" or "i have used marijuana more than x" but millenials were about 10-12% less than age group of 40-49

For those with knowledge of Cuban League baseball (or followed the defectors closer than I) - is it common for those top players to have featured the type of OBP that Abreu has? Should that signal he's more of a patient hitter than we are used to from Cuba, or is that line pretty typical for a top hitter in Cuba?

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 03:51 PM) Dayan and Alexei are kind of a selling point for guys like this Hopefully, he doesn't read Soxtalk then.

Sox Sign Jose Abreu - 6/$68 million
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 03:51 PM) Well, I'm not either. I just know we don't have any of them. Ramirez/Viciedo got peanuts compared to what this guy is going to get. I'm just tempering my expectations, I guess. Right, however, we have been "in" on the talks for all of these. Going back even to when we offered fukodome more than the cubs. And last year going in for Soler.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 03:43 PM) That said, there's no precedent for them going after a guy like this, so I wouldn't be surprised if we don't even have a chance on him. TBH, I'm not so sure that's true.

I'm all for going all out for this hitter. I don't want a 5 year rebuild I'd like to make a major step in 2015 and be back to full speed for 2016 and this guy should be in his prime for that.

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 10:23 PM) The Rangers will send the White Sox a player to be named later – minor league INF Leury Garcia if he clears waivers – or cash. The White Sox will also absorb some of the remaining $17 million left in Rios’ contract through 2014. If Garcia doesn’t clear waivers, the deal would change with the Rangers likely taking on more, if not all, of the remaining salary commitment. dallas morning news/sports We can get a decent idea of exactly the financial value being placed on acquiring Garcia right here in this paragraph... As far the the Astros taking Garcia, they MIGHT...Correa is way down in A ball still, at least 1 1/2 or 2 seasons away from the big leagues. But why? It seems like, considering they are not competing with the sox in anything right now, there would be some unspoken agreements that you don't be a dick just to be a dick as a fellow GM.

Alex Rios Appreciation Thread
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 08:18 PM) It's funny to see how he's being defended when he was absolutely TRASHED for so long during his downturns. It's good to see a guy like Alex get a chance at a ring. I certainly had issues with him but on the whole, I tip my cap. Well, the people who liked him are more likely to go into the appreciation thread.

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
If Alexei will only return us players slated to be UTIL or replacement level players, I don't understand the point of trading him.

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 08:07 PM) Me neither. I'm glad everyone is drinking the cool-aid now but with the way we're going, I fear the best case scenario is either a rebuilt team that maybe becomes competitive a long ways down the road, or some reincarnation of our recent strategy of retooling that accomplishes nothing more than the previous few teams have. I'm just not a fan of selling off these guys for nothing when we'll probably just resign similar players. This talk of Morales makes me ill. Agreed. Trading affordable and average starters for potential UTILs when we don't need salary relief is not exciting. RF was one of the few positions I would say is not urgent we get more production from. Now we need more production than we are getting from...every position beside DH?

Alex Rios Appreciation Thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 07:24 PM) It's fun to think about stuff like that. Like remember when Kenny Lofton was on the White Sox? And the Sox almost traded Jon Garland for Darin Erstad? I said that because yesterday I remembered Andruw Jones as a Sox. I had completely forgotten about that. I was really pumped for Kenny Lofton and he had that great first month or two, and then just wore down. Was amazed how many more years he played after that.

The 3 run walk off home run in 2010 was pretty sweet. Thanks for that Alex. Beside that, I will probably forget you were on Sox in 10 years.

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
QUOTE (shipps @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 06:37 PM) The players on this team have proved to be the worst team in the league. When you start trading said players why the heck would anyone expect to get someone to give you anything near their top talent? We are extremely lucky to have these other teams desperate enough to take on the contracts. Good job Hahn. So, does Chris Sale sucks? Heck, he doesn't have a winning record! Why should we get anything?

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 07:27 PM) In my opinion, the sooner people get comfortable with the fact the Sox won't compete next year, the easier it is to take these recent moves. Despite what Hahn has said, this is a pure rebuild. Well at least we have restocked our farm system!!!!!! sigh.

Presumably we will need SOME players.
