Realmuto to the Phillies - Sanchez/Alfaro+ to Marlins
So, I guess I'm trying to still figure this out NYM get Realmuto NYY get Thor FLA gets andujar On it's face that is not enough for any team except NYY. How much are they supplementing this. It seems the mets would be ones empty handed.

Rosenthal: Could Harper be headed to the southside
As you said, it doesn't really bother me. It's the opportunity to buy a young, very productive bat, which comes with a price. It is possible by underpaying, HOPEFULLY, young cost controlled, productive players across much of the rest of the team. It's the total budget that should matter, and having a proven bat allows us to use surplus to get additional cost controlled talent at points we need it, or whatever we need.

Winter Meetings Leaguewide Scuttlebutt
I really like that. No reason league can't just provide supplementary picks for competitive balance (due to fa loss). My complaints here are merely from an entertainment perspective, and this totally accomplishes that.

Rosenthal: Could Harper be headed to the southside
Here's my variation of this argument (to which I agree with you), I'm worried that hitting on the 2018 class was a big part of their plan. If they strike out, I'm worried that they haven't made up for it by finding enough talent in latam or the draft (and to this point I'm comparing them to the padres during the same time). So if a big part of this was using freed up money to buy elite, younger talent, then it will suck if they fail, because it means relying on our farm to create another elite bat.

Here is my case: Having a bad contract is only bad if you need to turn your assets into younger, valuable assets. If you just need to turn it into freeing up cash, you can move it. You may not move all of it, but you could find a team that's like "yes I could try to get the rest of Bryce Harper as my DH if we make the money work". If the sox suck and are saying "shoot we need to rebuild, we need to get what we can for Bryce Harper", then they are screwed, but that is the case anyway.

What is this? I saw you post something earlier but not sure I understood. Saying that if you sign in first month it's no draft pick attached, second month it kicks in, etc? Or just that it accelerates.

Rosenthal: Could Harper be headed to the southside
To answer your question: 1) Because that's the way the owner likes the site run 2) Because not everyone can follow the news throughout the day, so megathreads can be daunting to wade through 60-70 posts like "cool" "i can't read it" "hell sign here if we pay", and this allows them to follow biggest new info

Enjoy your new Harper thread.

Winter Meetings Leaguewide Scuttlebutt
No it's not (the same as it was). But it's better than what happens next. You really can't expect fans attention for that entire offseason to pay attention to the cold war chasing of ...like cody allen. It just needs to be more consolidated and fun. This was supposed to be one of the bigger classes ever, with tons of teams freeing up cash. And...it's like slightly better than last year.

Winter Meetings Leaguewide Scuttlebutt
You have said this last few years, but it is the only concentrated time of activity during the offseason. It clearly spurs some activity, and after its over ...the offseason is over. It's a slow trickle of deals until March.

Update per Heyman: White Sox one of 3 teams meeting Machado
No it’s poorly written (nightingale) it’s just saying Showalter gave a good review, who was a former Yankees and Orioles manager

Winter Meetings Leaguewide Scuttlebutt
Seems to be same theme, once teams identify the total player market and player hasn’t signed, they all hold their ground while player keeps trying to create leverage by waiting for market around to shrink but it doesn’t because every other player has same thing happening. This is a good bullpen class. The teams are going to make them all squirm until February. There is no urgency and no worries when they know they are competing with only 8 teams adding not 30 in free agency.

MLB has to do something about their FA period. When your fans are all clamoring for action in an offseason month, listen to the fans.
