Official 2008-2009 College Football Thread

So I was having a discussion with a Cubs fan last night (during their beat down) about OSU v Michigan. I know some of this wont resonate with people who hate OSU like Shadows or even some UM fans on this board, so I understand you guys may not agree. Heres what our conversation was based on: OSU v Michigan is a very heated, old, and really socioeconomic rivalry. OSU fans historically were the poor Ohio farmers while the UM fans were the wealthy Michigan folks whose economic status and quality of education really benefitted greatly from the automobile industry. This stigma has carried over for many years into what the rivalry is now. And Ill lay it out a bit and you can see where we got some of our conversation points. UM stereotypes etc: -Upper class-well off -Quiter crowd, not quite nuts into games -Doesnt care as much about OSU as OSu fans care about what Michigan does -better educated, better background-they look down on OSU fans -more reserved, classier at games -more popular, older richer history OSU -Crazy hillbillies -Care most about beating UM than about winning other games -Cheer more for UM losses than anything -Lower class, poor, worse education -annoying fans and players -Not as rich of a history So our conversation turned to really White Sox vs Cubs. There are alot of similarities between the Sox and OSU in the rivalry vs UM and the Cubs. And my friend being a Cubs/UM fan agreed with me that alot of the attitudes are the same between the two fanbases. I agree in that I have dealt with both Cubs fans assuming im a poor ghetto hillbilly, to UM fans assuming im a hillbilly farmer idiot. I also agreed that in both cases I assume that UM fans and Cubs fans arent really as into their teams nor the actual sport than I am. It came down to OSU playing the White Sox role, while UM really has been playing the Cubs role. It was really an interesting conversation and showed how socioeconomic stereotypes and geographics really bleed their way into sports and rivalries. I thought I would share that conversation with folks on this board as Im sure there are other rivalries in college football that fall into the same type of slots just like Cubs v White Sox. -

Palin as VP would be the closest Canadians could possibly get to running this country.

QUOTE (Soxy @ Oct 3, 2008 -> 11:17 AM) And I'm pissed that marriage is even regulated at all by the government. Marriage is a religious idea--civil unions are the legal idea. Let's leave marriage to the church. Yes, but marriage is still legally binding financially for people, so the government will always regulate that partnership because of the termonology .

Twins have "internal discussions" about Cabrera and Crede

There are probably 2 areas KW will focus on most this offseason: A leadoff hitter and a SP. I do not think he thinks there is a problem in CF. So the OF is fairly set. 3B could be filled with Fields in KW's mind, you better believe that. So most likely he will look at a project pitcher like Freddy for a SP and sign whatever big name middle IF'er that falls to his price range. I would say he probably does that, signs a fringe pen guy and calls it an offseason. There will be ZERO overhauls this offseason folks. This team almost won 90 games and made the playoffs without a 5th starter and our best offensive weapon. KW has no reason to think he needs a lineup overhaul. -
I just dont get Palin supporters, and I want someone who is really into politics on this site to help me out. If god forbid something happens to McCain if elected, Palin is your pres, are you really comfortable with that? Do you really feel good about her talking about her Mayorship and hockey mom stories to foreign leaders? The VP has some large responsibilities worldwide and I, for one, dont feel that comfortable with her representing and making decisions for this country.

One Man's Timidity Can Set the Tone

So Javy is a below average pitcher who folds in big games? I GUESS that was a supportive post. -

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 07:16 PM) Yeah, if Pryor is the 2nd best player on OSU, OSU isn't a very good football team. Better than when Boekman was behind center. And if you have watched any OSU games including USC, you will have noticed that when Beanie isnt on the field, the next most impressive Buckeye has been Pryor. -
Does anyone think Guillen did a poor job managing?
RockRaines replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Ozzie is painted into a corner on several things. his 5th starter goes does for his career, his 4th starter craps himself down the stretch. He puts out there what he has in the clubhouse, and somehow still won the division with scotch tape and geriatrics. Yesterday? The hit and run was bad, other than that, nothing too negative. -
Im sorry for the Palin fans on here, but she really does sound retarded at times. That "hockey mom" routine is pretty terrible. I thought Biden-though shaky at times, was at least the agressor most of the time, and knew when to hammer points and be very concise.

The Cubs aren entirely out of this though people. Harden holds a very decisive edge in the next game. Then I think its Lilly vs Lowe, Lowe could easily give up more runs than he did last game. At that point its 2/2 and I think they pitch Zambrano in game 5, and he still could shut them down. This isnt over yet by a long shot.

Lets be honest folks. Clayton gets by on deception, being a LHP and having some sink. He will be a good arm pen, and already is. As a starter? Probably not.

Theres so many Dodgers players I wish we had. Martin, Loney, Kemp, Furcal, Ethier, Billingsly, Broxton etc etc. Wow

s***, Im 27 and my recovery time from sports or even injuries gets longer every day. I got advice from an older family member awhile back that I think made a large impact on me. He said that he wishes he was more active when his body could actually perform the way he wanted it to. He mentioned that people spend alot of time working and watching TV and not enough enjoying the time when you can actually play sports, or run races or even just be active all the time. My advice to everyone is that you shouldnt take your physical health for granted because one day, its gone.

Old at 22? I think you mean grown up.

Twins have "internal discussions" about Cabrera and Crede
RockRaines replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
They cant afford either one and Crede is an injury risk, which is good for the Sox. Twins fans are chatting about how they want Mauer moved to third to save his knees for the future, so not sure about Cuddyer over there. -
You can bet this article is on the Sox bulletin board

Even if TB won the season series, it was VERY close to swining our way, epsecially when our 1-3 trip there could of very easily been 3-1. -

QUOTE (danman31 @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 12:49 AM) Pryor is the second best player on that team? Really? I think once he has to pass against decent teams, his numbers will be pedestrian. I'm not saying he can't be great, but he isn't yet. If he's the 2nd best player that team has, then that's why Ohio State isn't that good this year. Yes. He is the second most talented player on the OSU team. And I dont know why that makes them bad, he was head and shoulders the most talented high school team in the nation last year. And both Beanie and Pryor were AA game mvp's. -
You know, we dont need this bad karma.

Vinnie's on grand. Small Tuna, Oil, spices, swiss cheese. Unreal

BWAHAHA, of course the Bengals sign Benson!

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Sep 30, 2008 -> 09:45 PM) I'll give you Beanie, Pryor, AND Eddie George if you want, and USC will still man-handle OSU, whether it's in LA, Columbus, or Cuba. You might want to worry about your own conference at this point. And maybe we wouldnt win, but we would still like another shot with our best two players starting. -
Morneau Lee Longoria They all deserve it.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Sep 29, 2008 -> 08:03 PM) Rock, what do you use ondemand for most of the time? I don't really use ondemand at all, I mainly just access my recorded stuff on the DVR. Maybe I'm missing something. Old TV shows- Silver spoons etc, other recent shows are on there too. I watch premium channels shows like Entourage, Sopranos, Oz. I never had to DVR Big Brother because the episode from the night before always shows up on OnDemand the next day. Even series like Band of Brothers will be on there from tim eto time which ensures that I wont be leaving the house that day. Theres TONS of stuff on there, just gotta look around.

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Sep 30, 2008 -> 10:29 AM) Tough game last night. Kendall Simmons and Rashard Mendenhall lost for the season. The Ray Lewis hit on Rashard was just nasty. Can't say I'm saddened by Kendall being out though, he was brutal. Rookie law #1 Dont talk s*** about the Ravens defense.
