QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 10:25 AM) If Scott Podsednik was stealing bases at an 80% clip or better (and had half as many errors as he did right now), I wouldn't mind his batting average or his OBP nearly as much. But he's barely moving out on the basepaths right now. So, if we can't get the speed at the top, we need a guy with a higher OBP. We need one or the other, a decent leadoff hitter doesn't have neither. Yes, but I wasnt talking about PODS. I was talking about having a lead off hitter. This team will not be as effective just plugging some dude at the top of the order who cant run. Speed, the ability to distract the pitcher, and go from 1st to 2nd is an intangibile that you cant measure.

QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 09:58 AM) If the BoSox will give us Crisp and Hansen for Freddy, KW will break his leg getting to the phone...that is a deal YOU MUST MAKE, if offered. Sweeney is developing, but it will be interesting to see where the Sox go with Fields. If the idea is to tie up Crede for long-term and the Sox are definately pushing Fields for left field one day, then Sweeney would have to wait on RF (Dye)....Sweeney probably has right-field talent, but Dye is still a great player and isn't using a walker. Sweeney has played some CF in Charlotte, but I believe Anderson is the guy there....we traded Young away and were very patient with BA this year, to the point where it is slowly paying off. I don't believe both Fields and Sweeney will ever both be starters in Chicago UNLESS the Sox don't think or will lock up Crede long term. My belief is Crede (as long as we can trust his back) is the most important player on this team not named Konerko. He plays brilliant defense, has become a great hitter, and is "a clutch" guy who you can always count on. I DONT WANT him traded. So that means Fields only other option is left or right. Other teams (Houston, San Diego) wanted Fields and they wanted him for 3rd base. If we are going to make the investment in him and ask him to learn another position it will be rewarded with an opportunity in Chicago. Thing about Fields is...he can do it, he can become an excellent outfielder. The kid has amazing work ethic and has shown the propensity to improve on his weaknesses. I see a kid in Fields that will be a consistent .280, 30 homer, 20 stolen base guy who brings the character you need to win it all. Sweeney will hit for the higher average, but won't hit as many homers or steals...yet his defense will likely be better. Right now I'd like to see our minor league system re-tool with middle fielders and pitchers. I am a big fan and am very high on Chris Getz, but he isn't there yet...but Lopez and Valido are starting to worry me and we have nothing left at CF...I know we hit C hard in this past draft, so we'll see how that develops. One of the things that you can look at for our future is that if we put Sweeney, Anderson and Fields in the OF at the same time, we have just changed the face of this team. We have put extremely athletic, fast guys in the OF, with GOOD arms. The team must adapat then as well. Maybe we come a little more of a speed team, which could fit in well with our pitching philosophy. If we still have some power coming from Fields, Kong , Crede, and whoever is our DH, we have plenty of RBI guys and speed guys to make the team well balanced. It would be an exciting transition to see IMO.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2006 -> 11:10 AM) I still think Ross Gload has it in him to be the starting 1st baseman for a big league team if he ever gets the shot. He controls the bat really well, doesn't have the power of our guys, but should be able to hit .300+ with moderate power over a full season if he's given the shot. It's sort of a shame that the 2 guys in front of him are just so bloody good. He could be a faster Shawn Casey.

QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Aug 17, 2006 -> 08:49 PM) Yep, the order of importance should be 1.) OBP and then speed a distant second. Ideally the best leadoff hitters combine both, but I can't name many other than Ichiro perhaps. Funny how last year when we were killing everyone, our speed was one of the most important reason why we were so good. It was so important that we all voted PODS on to the All-star team. Now everyone wants to play the 3 run homer game. Hilarious to me. Speed is something you need, and helps you win the games that are 1-0, 2-0 etc. If your lead off hitter can steal bases, when he gets on, its almost an automatic double, which leads to a higher possibility of you gettting an early run for your pitching staff. Its better to be balanced that be bombers. IN the playoffs-speed wins games.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 17, 2006 -> 09:10 AM) WTF is his problem anyway? He's become the Danny Fortson of the MLB, he's basically just a piece of s*** headhunter at this point in his career. I don't remember him going after people when his ass was in the NL having to go up to the plate 2-3 times a game, so now that he's protected by the DH he decides to go after any hitter that looks at him the wrong way? Because he really has no pitching upside, so he decided that maybe if he headhunted a little it would improve his ERA. -
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 17, 2006 -> 12:34 PM) I'm not a big fan of Ozzie as a manager overall obviously, but at this point, through 120 plus games, in mid August, in the heart of a pennant chase....these guys should not need motivation. This isn't April against the Mariners or something, by now these guys should know how good they could be and how big every last game is. But they don't, and that is sad. Yeah, who WOULD be a fan of a manager who came into this city and brought us a WS in only his second year. I mean, GOD!!!

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 16, 2006 -> 08:30 PM) Cintron Ks. Corpseball is here. Boo this team off the field tonight. None of these players realize that our last winning streak only contained 1HR. The key to this game is getting on base guys. But instead, we want HR, then HR, then HR, then HR. -

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Aug 16, 2006 -> 08:07 PM) You can pretty much throw out any momentum we gained from sweeping the Tigers. This is just brutal. YUP. And the pitching once again failed to concentrate, the offense decided to go for an HR at every at bat. This team only likes playoff type baseball. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 16, 2006 -> 06:41 PM) This is the worst possible defensive outfield we can have, which is quite the accomplishment with our roster. With the day game tomorrow, im sure he wanted to give the guys a little rest. -
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 16, 2006 -> 10:37 AM) The Rangers have quickly become one of my most hated teams in the last few years. Padilla decided that he wasnt really a good pitcher, so he figured, maybe I should become a headhunter?

Playoff tickets are pricey. I got around this by selling off my ALDS tix and letting them pay for the rest of the playoffs. -
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 10:06 PM) Ozzie just tipped his hat to Runnynose. Sad. Ozzie thinks that Cora did the right thing sending Gooch. Worse Javy threw the ball good according to Oz. Terrible Well 3ER is not a horrible outing. KC can score some runs, and have been lately. The offense is the true culprit last night. They were swinging for the fence all game. I guess they didnt realize our winning streak came with only 1 HR

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 12:15 PM) Since April 20th, Beckett has the 2nd worst ERA in all of baseball among starting pitchers. That's a pretty damning stat. but hes on the SAWKS!!! HE IS EXCEPTIONAL!!!

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 12:07 PM) Cotts has certainly not been the same as he was last season but some of you make it seem like he is politte out there. His era is a little deceptive but its no where as much as Marte's was last season. It should be high 3's low 4's probably with how he pitched while Marte's should of been around 6-7. That bad part about Cotts is his inherited runners scoring avg.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 14, 2006 -> 11:48 PM) I didn't think I was being all that vague. You're telling me you've never heard/suspected anything about Rowand and the possibility of performance enhancing drugs? You can basically infer the same things about Rowand that you can for Rodriguez. And this is about as far as I'm going to go on this, conversations on this subject especially involving Rowand never end well. I wouldnt go that far. A-row wasnt on the same team as some of the biggest juicers in the MLB. He also wasnt directly named in a book regarding use. Also, I-rod's numbers are hilariously inflated during those years.

QUOTE(whitesoxin @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 12:03 AM) So tonight I caught my first foul ball. I was in section 146 and bare handed a foul liner off the bat of Mark Teahan. It was fun high fiving everyone and letting people feel the ball. The ball was right on path to hitting my girlfriend as she assumed a fetal position and closed her eyes, so luckily I was able to reach around her and catch it. I had previously gotten a ball in Tuscon, but that was from the Rockies bullpen catcher after I told him I'd give him my smoothy if he gave me a ball. Does anyone else have a story about catching a foulball/homerun? Did you give it to a little kid or did you keep it for yourself? Was it off a ricochet or in the air? I got 3 last year, only kept one. I usually like to give it to a kid around me if possible, it will make their year.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 14, 2006 -> 02:17 PM) I think this post says it all. You can't force thing and if she doesn't want to "be" with you than so be it, than it may not be meant to be. Someone else will come along cause to go between she likes you, she doesn't like you, well #1 its not healthy and #2 it gets old real fast. Plus, at yourg stage in the life its not worth it to miss out on plenty of good times to deal with games. Just go out and have fun, spend time with your friends and enjoy things. Its really out of your hands, so nothing you can worry about. Honestly, if I could go back and do it all again, I would have opted out of one of my s***ty long term relationships. Live it up, there are so many girls out there.
