White Sox Acquire RP Tony Pena from ARI for Brandon Allen
daa84 replied to chetkincaid's topic in Pale Hose Talk
btw this was kind of interesting and is actually exactly how i felt abotu allen....nice bat but probably not a regular...more along the lines of Ross gload or micah hoffpaueir....even if you hate keith law (because i know many do) this is at least the take of a scout he talked to -
QUOTE (SoxFanForever @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 08:46 AM) Nobody cared for the Neal Cotts start at Yankee Stadium? ah yes...the game that got jerry manuel fired

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 08:37 PM) After the last post that said he was good at baseball, I was going to post "correction, he is OK at baseball" but passed. Now I'll say it, he's not terrible, and he's not good either. He's ok. He's about a league average outfielder, and has a crappy batting average (albeit with some pop) and strikes out a lot, but a really good OBP raises his status from "bad baseball player" to "all right player." People get carried away talking about his OBP making him underrated, this doesn't mean he's good. It just means he's not bad. this is exactly right. I'll frankly always disagree with people like bearsox who insist swisher is a "terrible" baseball player. Is swisher is a star? hell no. Is he a decent major leaguer? Yes. And could we use a decent major leaguer in CF right now instead of Dwise and brian Anderson? Absolutely, and IMO the "blind swisher hate" comes from people who can't even admit that. Regardless of what your opinions of him are you must admit that KW got a horrendous return for him. When you get a guy a who was DFAd 1 month into hte season, a guy with a 10+ ERA in charlotte and a minor league reliever (albeit a promising one) its bad value for a guy who will end the season with 20-25 HR and a .360 obp. I'm even willing to admit that the Javy Vazquez deal was probably not the greatest deal either, but at least in that deal we got a guy who looks to be a future everyday player in Flowers, and we were able to save 4 more mil over what we saved in the swisher deal -

I have no problem with ozzie not starting richard the rest of the year...but after he gave up the slam...you gotta keep him in the game just for innings..... -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 07:40 PM) I never buy the concept of a "Move to setup a bigger move" because I can't remember the last time it actually happened. KW made this move because he wanted Tony Pena. ding ding -

allens best value was via trade....pena has upside and could become a solid 7th inning guy...i dont really envision allen as much of a regular....the biggest question is whos spot does he take? Gobble? -
nice first outing for bellamy....2 perfect IP 3 K

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 06:42 PM) Cubs are lighting up one of the best pitchers in the NL. Going to have to hope Javy pitches well against them tomorrow. at least its not as bad as what philly did to one of the best pitchers in the NL

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 06:26 PM) What the hell has gotten into Lee? didn't see the HR tonight, but his last few...pitchers have gotten in to trouble the same way they always get into trouble with Dlee and Aramis Ramirez...pitching out over the plate (especially in hitters counts) and letting those guys lean across and extend. Gotta pound on those guys in on the hands

my grades and comments Mark Buerhle: A. Has been everything I had hoped for John Danks: B. Inconsistent, yet reliable and still has surprisingly good numbers Gavin B-. Bipolar season thus far...not much in between Jose Contreras: C. demerits for coming back too soon (though that should probably be on the coaching staff) but has solidified our rotation in his return Bartolo Colon: D+ Unearned runs have masked his ERA...he was pretty bad. 12 HR in 55 innings is horrendous Clayton Richard: C. Expected inconsistency, and thats what we got. He's a 5th starter, and nothing more, but that has value. Bobby Jenks: A-. Good year so far Matt Thronton: A-. been a bit shaky lately, but generally very consistently good Scott Linebrink: B: hiccup against the cubs hurts. another guy whos ERA masked by unearned runs, but still has been better than Soxtalk gives credit for Octavio Dotel: B. He's been fairly consistent. I think youd be hard pressed to find many teams with better 4th relievers DJ carrasco: B. Eats innings, and keeps us in games. I think youd be hardp ressed to find many teams with better 5th relievers Gobble: D. Does he ever pitch? not sure his role Poreda: Too few IP to grade. AJ Pierzynski: C. HR have been nice, but where did the 2bs go? On base still subpar but better than expected from him. Has had the worst defensive year I can ever remember watching a catcher Paul Konerko: B+ Real solid year so far from Paul, but certainly not spectacular Chris Getz: D+. I like the way the kid plays but a .644 OPS and .303 OBP just isn't going to cut it long term. I have soured on him since Spring training, hes got limited upside Alexei Ramirez: C. Another wildly inconsistent player who gets big time knock cuz of his terrible defense, which i predicted in spring would be horrible. He needs to be moved to CF long term IMO Josh Fields: D. Was bad as a regular and has seemingly been better as a reserve. I still like his upside better than Getz, and would like to see him at 3b a bit more with Gordon somewhere in the middle IF. Gave getz a D+ and him a D because of defense Gordon Beckham: B-. Rough start. really coming on now. kid is gonna be a player Jayson Nix: C. not much average and not much obp, but really nice power and superb D at many positions Wilson Betemit: F Brent Lillibridge: F Dewayne Wise: F Scott Podsednik: B+. Nice average and obp. power has been nice for leadoff. defense has been better than people credit him for Brian Anderson: C-. Little Power, Low average. Decent BB rate and good Defense keep him from a D Jermaine Dye: A-. Consistently very good. Really picked it up with Q out. Defense could have knocked him down to B+ Jim Thome: B+. .400 obp and good power. Corky Miller/Ramon Castro: D. I like Castro better than Miller

QUOTE (Seymizzle @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 07:49 AM) He needs to show more power in my opinion. If he doesn't he'll just be another Ryan Sweeney. they may be similiar style players, but Danks has hit for a higher average, gotten on base at a higher clip, has slugged more, is more likely to stay at CF long term, is a significantly better % base stealer granted sweeney was younger he was at AA, danks's minor league numbers so far are significantly better than any one year Ryan Sweeney had in the minors....the only one big advantage that sweeney has is contact rate

QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 11:07 AM) Is Pat Verterelli from Chicago involved in this match as well? He was ranked pretty high in the nation. Bertoletti ....he's from Palos Heights, I knew him growing up

QUOTE (Downtown518 @ Jun 30, 2009 -> 02:56 PM) Per Mark Gonzales no Pods tonight, amongst other changes.... Nix - LF Missle - SS JD - RF PK - DH AJ - C BA - CF Bacon - 3B Getz - 2B Fields - 1B I know Ozzie wants to give Pods a day off vs. the tough lefty which im more than OK with, but it seems like Nix's defensive IF prowess is wasted in LF...oh well i guess he's becoming a jack of all trades....its just really a damn shame we didn't at least try Alexei in CF/LF in ST because defensively he sucks at SS and that lineup would read alot better D like this....Nix 3b, Missle LF, JD RF, PK 1b, AJ C, BA CF, Beckham SS, Getz 2b, Fields DH -
AL again won 137 to 114. Since 2005 the AL has dominated, and I still believe the difference in the two leagues is drastic and understated. Wins by League: YEAR AL NL 1997 97 117 1998 114 110 1999 116 135 2000 136 115 2001 132 120 2002 123 129 2003 115 137 2004 126 125 2005 136 116 2006 154 98 2007 137 115 2008 149 103 2009 137 114 Totals 1,673 1,534 Got this Question submitted to Rob Neyer today.... and here is part of stark's article (full article here... http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?...e=stark_jayson)

id rathers see beckham at SS and Nix at 3rd than the other way around in this situation...if theres one thing i am really frustrated at right now its the organizations lack of willingness to look at Beckham in the middle IF and Alexei in CF

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 16, 2009 -> 09:01 PM) In the first game of the DH Kroeger hit an 8th inning bomb off one of the better Red Sox prospects Hunter Jones. It's also sad that we can say Jeff Marquez had his best start of the year today. yeah i was going to say...at this point i'll take that outing from marquez
