QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 05:31 PM) Would one of those guys alone get a deal done for Hamilton or are we talking about a ridiculous package. I'd consider dealing Hamilton for one very good prospect but I don't know if I'd start going crazy packaging people. I'd prefer to put up an offer of one of the starting pitching prospects (preferably one not name Gio/Danks but I'd probably give up Gio before Danks) as well as Sweeney or Anderson. I know talent for talent wise it isn't a great deal from the Reds side of things but I just can't see giving up a ton of talent for a guy with that type of checkered past. However, I would be incredibly excited if the club picked Hamilton up since he is a super talented player. i personally think danks has much higher trade value than people on here think....hes still only 22 years old and was considered a top 50 prospect in baseball 1 year ago...he was pushed pretty hard through the ranks in texas and probably sohuld have had a full year at AAA....either way he proved he can pitch at this level, its just a matter of finding thats consistency that young pitchers so often struggle to achieve...nonetheless hes still a good bet to win a dozen ball games for each of the next 4 years while making dirt.....thats pretty good value, especially for a team like cincy

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 05:29 PM) Here is another option: Jason Tyner. How about one of the little piranhas coming over to join the White Sox and help out in CF. I don't know how good he can be or is, but he always played good against us and was non-tendered by the Twins. What do you guys think about him? i think hes jerry owens, but worse and miraculously with less power

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 05:23 PM) I'll be honest, there's one guy on the Sox who I really don't want to show up on the list. Besides him, I really don't care and won't be surprised. However, (this isn't the person I was referring to) if PK was on steroids, he should get his money back. If you see him walking around in normal street clothes, you would never think that someone with his body was a professional athlete. thome? cuz hes basically the one guy i hope isnt on the list...other than that it doesnt really matter

QUOTE(whitesox94 @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 05:22 PM) 1 Konerko You don't just become a star youre right, generally you tear up the minor leagues, win minor league player of the year, come up have some struggles but at a young age still prove to be a pretty good hitter, and then make adjustments and blossom into a 40 HR guy.... pauly hit 30 HR in AA as a 20 year old...and hit .294 with 25 Hr for the sox when he was 23....how again did he become a star overnight?

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 05:20 PM) I'd rather have him than Pierre, no doubt about it. considering the dollars for sure....fathom i know youve been advocating a hamilton acquisition....i like the idea, but what do you think it would take it get it done? it seems to me the reds are in a win now mode...and in the NL i certainly dont blame them...one or two acquisitions can put you in the thick of things (am i the only one who thinks houston actually has a shot...tejada lee and berkman is a pretty solid core, especially pence comes back strong)...but what do we have to offer them? they will undoubtedly want major league ready pitching, but what ready pitching can we afford to give them without crippling our own staff?

sit back, relax and strap it down? no but really, i do sit back..let this team play...assess what you have in fields richar, quentin, owens/sweeney/anderson, danks, and floyd.....when we are 15 games back at the trading deadline trade thome/konerko/dye or something for even more young players, let those guys play out 2008...save the money we were going to use on hunter and the money we save on trading one of the boppers above and pool it into next years FA (or trade) market....all to set up for 09 and 10...oh and start investing in the draft (including scouting etc. which weve begun to do by getting bell) \ on a side note the giants have been talking about a matsui or rios for cain or lincecum.....konerkos contract is not that much unlike matsuis and i think hes the better player....if in fact one of those pitchers is available, why is kenny not dangling pauly? at this point i would consider it

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Dec 10, 2007 -> 08:31 PM) With some guy named Chris Carter #8.... They'd rank 3, 4 in the Sox system. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune....food-for-t.html

when they added the shileding on it...it looks like the guy from halo

QUOTE(Heartattack19 @ Dec 10, 2007 -> 11:38 AM) I bet it is the same guy! He was young then and talked a lot of s***. All i know is he crushed the ball, i am still pissed i mismanaged the bullpen and ran out of pitchers....(i sent the last guy who was able to pitch to go and get the keg, he was the only guy with a car who was not already in the game) The DePaul team had some huge Party the night before and got busted. I have heard the team is still defunct because of that. Club ball was a lot of fun, more drinking than playing and when we played hungover, we always played better. im pretty sure its teh same kid, he played ball at stagg hs...im suprised he hit a slam, he wasnt much of a bopper...skinny middle IF type (2b or maybe CF).....he started at stagg but wasnt anything great...batted 9th i think....i think he struck out in the 7th to lose to sandburg in the sectional final while down 1 if it makes you feel any better

QUOTE(knightni @ Dec 10, 2007 -> 04:56 PM) He was born and raised in West Virginia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morgan_Spurlock i think he means the kid that he knew is the same guy i knew.....who is a completely differnet person from morgan spurlock the movie maker....they two just have the same names...get it? sorry thats confusing
-
i dont think hes necessarily counting on floyd, but the thing is that there are options there should he falter (or danks for that matter)....realistically haeger, broadway, gio, sisco, masset egbert could all make a push for that 5th starter spot....yes it may turn into rauch/wright/munoz/felix diaz but at this stage i actually dont mind seeing what these guys have....we arent gonna realistically compete, so why not see what some of these youngsters (including floyd) can do for the year? i guess a logical rebuttal would be because kenny is still trying to go for it, but imo he is trying to go for it while trying to rebuilding, and its about that time that we start seeing what some of these young pitchers have

QUOTE(Heartattack19 @ Dec 7, 2007 -> 10:46 AM) Completely off topic, but it still got me riled up! Morgan Spurlock is a name i will never forget. Back when i was captain of Loyola Universities Club Team (2003) our senior day doubleheader was against DePaul. They had this goofy lanky ass player named Morgan Spurlock who talked a lot of Crap. He went like 0 for 8, we came back from a 8 to nothing deficit, i ran out of pitching in the bottom of the last inning and had to put in my drunk ass starter from game one. He promptly gives up a game losing walk off grand slam to DePaul's Morgan Spurlock. Sorry for the rant, the name continues to haunt me to this day! haha i used to know a guy named morgan spurlock who fits that exact description...probably the same guy....he would have been closer to a freshman or soph in 2003 though....ill bet its the same guy....never cared for him much either

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 07:41 PM) Just so we are aware, -Magglio Ordonez's knee was in such bad shape that he couldn't have the surgery he wanted in the United States. -The Carlos Lee trade (indirectly) won the World Series for the White Sox in 2005, because the $8 mill or so that saved went towards, I dunno, whichever tandem you want to match the numbers up with (Duque, Iguchi, Pierzynski? That's about right) -Aaron Rowand brought the White Sox Jim Thome That's what happened to the 3 of those guys that were starting. exactly...and we didnt have viable options to replace them

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 05:45 PM) Did anyone bring up Nate McLouth as a possible trade option? Had around an .821 OPS in 2007 IIRC, and stole 22 bases. He was much better power wise against righties, but if the price was right he could be a decent lead off option I guess. Anyways, 4/55 Rowand is overpaying, but it's not a 5 year deal at least. If Rowand can consistently produce what he did this season for Philly for the Sox in at least 3 of the seasons, then it'll be a good signing. I doubt that will be the case though, but KW has to save face here. mcclouth is very available, i just think at this point KW has to be looking at making more of a splash than guy like mcclouth and dejesus....not that a bigger splash is out there, but we will see

for what its worth the marlins payroll next year to start may be 8 millions dollars......the yankees will probably average that per player....the marlins highest paid player will probably be andrew miller (if he makes the team) at a bit over a million per year....otherwise it will be kevin gregg at around .5 mil per year.... unbelievable....but i heard on mike and mike this morning that someone in the marlins office confessed that they had 350 people show up to a game last year.....i have to think that more than 350 people work at the cell alone

QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 05:10 PM) BP said they thought there was one really big offer for Fukudome -- and they thought it was from the Cubs. And Hendry did say he would outbid anyone for him. Plus, Fukudome strikes out. He's not the player Williams is talking about. given what he said, I'm guessing they are targeting David DeJesus or Crisp. will carroll guessed that it was from the cubs....big difference than saying htey thought it was from the cubs

jose guillen will be paid 1.5 times what the entire florida marlins 25 man roster will be paid

QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 04:47 PM) 3:45 p.m., from Amy Nelson • Andrew Miller got a phone call within the hour from Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski that he was traded to Florida, which signals that the deal is official. press conference for the deal is now....so nevermind about the deal not being done

ozzie said on mlbtv that finding the right center fielder was going to be more about filling the "needs" for this specific ballclub...kenny said those are high obp, few Ks, longer at bats, etc....rowand isnt exactly a high obp guy (his obp is mostly drive by BA) and does K alot....so im hoping this really means we got fukudome who many people are saying is a mix between hideki and ichiro.....

this is from will carrols chat.... i really think ti could be the sox.....sox offer rowand 4 years 55...he declines...sox offer it to kosuke fyi: he had reported earlier that both chicago teams appeared to be making the strongest offerings

QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 04:13 PM) Well, yes, many people are saying it's too late and that Kenny already screwed up. Also, were these 2005 acquisitions all part of the plan 6 months before ? I doubt it. Lastly, 5 years of a bad farm system - how about 10 ? eh 5 or 6 years ago we had the ability to trade tons of our stocked farm system for major league talent...and to a large part, we did just that...unfortunately we just didnt restock it

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 04:03 PM) Fathom's proposition is no worse than all the people who turn "leadoff hitter" into a position, as if it makes some astronomical difference on how many runs a team will score. I understand it's absurd in the fact that never ever ever ever would Thome lead off, but in reality it wouldn't change a whole lot about our offense. The only thing you'd be assuring is that Thome -- the Sox' best hitter -- gets the most at-bats in that game or, in the hypothetical situation where he lead-off for a whole year, he'd get the most plate appearances. Basically, I think fathom was just trying to make a point about the people thinking we need a "leadoff hitter". Like if we got Andruw Jones or Aaron Rowand, the lineup would still be incomplete because it's missing a "leadoff hitter". can we pin this so everyone can see it?

QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 04:02 PM) just a little history to bring you back in off the ledge: 12/08/04 signed Dustin Hermanson 12/09/04 signed Jermaine Dye 12/13/04 traded C.Lee for Pods and Viz 12/17/04 acquired Bobby Jenks 12/22/04 signed El Duque 1/06/05 signed A.J. 1/19/05 signed Pablo and Widger 1/27/05 signed Iguchi nobody is saying its too late to assemble the team, the frustrating part is that many of the pieces people envisioned on the 08 team are gone because either we 1.) got out bid or 2.) have finally seen that 5 years of deteriorating a farm system without replenishing it is finally catching up to us

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 02:57 PM) I don't understand why everyone is down on kotchman, at this point konerko for kotchman plus a spect and either willits or figgins is a huge win for us. Kotchman would be a positive organizational move. people just dont understand how valuable it is to have guys that are 85-90% as productive as "superstars", while making 5% of what those superstars make
