Or did they believe he was never going to hit, so they just brought him up because with his defense they were hoping he may do something. Its not like they brought him up onto a championship caliber team. Sometimes they have learned all they can in the minors and the team knows they won't make it.

Simone Biles is still disgustingly good
ptatc replied to lostfan's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
She is actually a good person as well. Female Olympic gymnasts have a tendency to not be the nicest people in the world. She'll do well after her competitive career is over. -
It could be just more that the Sox will have such a low payroll that they can afford the huge contract for the first time in history. The rebuilding players coming up will be cost controlled for most of the 10 year contract. The overall payroll may still be the same just a bunch of cost controlled guys and one massive contract.

Boras historically drags the big signings out to maximize the competition, real or imagined

Selfishly, this is what concerns me. The state neglected to pay their share into a pension account creating their own mess and now I will have worked for years to lose all of that money. The constitutional convention won't change the obligation protection it will change the benefits for state employees. I guess a bright side would be illinois will get a larger work force as all of the retired state workers will now need to come out of retirement to get jobs.

Rick Renteria Signs Contract Extension, length unknown
ptatc replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Do people really want to commit 30 mil/year to a guy who when he is young admits he doesn't like to try all the time? What is he going to be like in 2-3 years when he starts to get achy and sore everyday? -
I thought That was Yu Darvish.

Same. Its the thc that does it.

Yes. Research has shown that consistent use of marijuana leads to non-fatal heart attacks. The other effect is that it's a significant anti-inflammatory. This is one of the original reasons for medical marijuana.

oh yeah. Agreed.

Good for economy, bad for healthcare.

The general education courses you are required to take aren't what the university deemed you need to take. Its based on educational theories on expanding the mind to think in different ways to improve functional intelligence in a number of areas. Intelligence isn't knowledge and content. Its the process of thinking. This is why classes in math, science, history and other general education are required, to get the mind thinking differently. If you only want to attain knowledge in a given area, you are missing the entire point of a college education. You are approaching it like specializing in sports, which just as bad of an idea for you physically and the mind being to specialized in education. We all have strengths and weakness in learning. It doesn't mean your mind isn't better off getting out of its comfort zone.

Sox Exercise Jones Option @ $4.65M; Buyout Shields
ptatc replied to ChiSox59's topic in Pale Hose Talk
When he is out injured the Sox aren't paying his contract. Insurance is in most cases. So the cost isn't a factor as he is worth 4.65 million when healthy. -
They have a new head coach who had only 1/2 season as a play caller for experience. A QB who has only 18 NFL a d 13 college starts. They are going to be inconsistent. What shouldn't be happening is the defense refusing to use their arms to tackle and only diving at the feet of the ball carrier. The defense refuses to tackle.

Dear FO: Harper VS Machado, Soxtalk Will Help You Decide

This is where I'm at. I don't think they should trust him with that contract. -
Picking a major is a significant part of it.

I need to look into that. My daughter getting that money out of it is probably part of the reason. ? With the college illinois plan as it stands, if they don't go to college you get your money back with 2% interest. It's not much but you don't lose money.
-
Yeah, this is technically a 529 just with a specific state of illinois involvement. We liked it because it "forced" us to save every month with the coupon book. Otherwise we may not have been that consistent with putting money away each month. We certainly could have used that money elsewhere at that time of our lives.
-
My advice is start a college illinois plan when they are in kindergarten. My wife and I are terrible savers. They send you a payment book like a car loan. You pay over 10 years pre-tax (plan paid when they are sophomores in high school). You pay the current rate of illinois universities now. The plan pays for all tuition and mandatory fees at illinois public universities. If they go to a private school or out of state (my daughter is in Colorado) they average the costs at the illinois schools and pay that to the school they attend. We paid 53,000 over 10 years and she will get about 77,000 out of it.

Been where you are and now I'm in the 1 kid in college and another starting next year. Luckily i just paid off my last student loan (doc). It's a ball of laughs.

I think baseball is actually has more viable options. They don't need as large of an attendance per game and they can have smaller less expensive stadia as there are more games. The NFL has fewer games and needs larger crowds. The NFL shares national revenue more so than other sports so they need to generate more local revenue. Edit: Oops read it wrong the first time. Too early for me. I agree baseball hasmore options. The Bears could move but wouldn't need to leave the Chicago area. The could easily move to Aurora for cheaper more expansive land to build a complex similar to LA new site.
-
No doubt. I was just giving another option for the poster's point. Its good business for the sports team to have someone else help pay for the stadium. It doesn't mean the politicians need to fall for it though.
-
Or they can move and leave the city without a team.

I like to use the Craig Ferguson rules to marriage and posting on websites. 1. Does it need to be said. 2. Does it need to be said.....by me. 3. Does it need to be said....by me......now. Saves a great deal of grief in marriage.

Sox have "flexibility" to add "long term pieces"
ptatc replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I think there is value to having veterans on a team of young players learning the MLB. Not at the expense of blocking a player they think will be a star, but there needs to be a few veterans on the team.
