  1. QUOTE (HeGone33 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 10:06 PM) LeBron needs to lose the cocky attitude, makes him look like an immature ass. I love when people call LeBron and Kobe cocky. They are the two best players in the world, they have every right in the world to be as cocky as they choose. And the Bulls half court offense is pathetic right now. I wonder if Vinny put ANY half court sets in during training camp.
  2. That was just inexcuseable and pathetic. Ball State is a superior team to NIU, but we just didn't show up and let ourselves get pantsed on national television. We have to win out now to have a chance at a bowl after that performance, even if we go 2-1 the last 3 and get to 7-5, I doubt a bowl would take us after seeing that. They should be ashamed of themselves, it's one thing to lose, it's another to not try.
  3. McLouth winning is a joke, a classic example of winning the gold glove with your bat. I think all of the other first time winners (Phillips, Victorino, Gonzalez, and Molina) are quite deserving though, especially Phillips and Molina.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 04:00 PM) For a fascinating trend...here's an NYT map breakdown by county of which areas of the country Senator McCain outperformed President Bush's 2004 numbers. Make your own assumptions about what drove this effect. I heard somebody on CNN the other day saying that he was more worried about the "Bradley effect" in the industrial areas of the rust belt north such as Ohio and Pennsylvania because "the south has addressed it's racial demons while the north hasn't." Talk about a stupid comment, you have one right there. I wish I could remember who said it to give them their full credit. But yeah, that map really doesn't surprise me at all, although I'm sure the "gun toting, bible holding" comment or whatever it was Obama said didn't help him in those areas.
  5. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 03:50 PM) maybe i misinterpreted your comment, I took it as you saying that it was a myth that he could play RF No that is certainly possible. It seems like there are a lot of defenders of his outfield play last season though around here, and that is a myth because quite frankly he was mediocre in left field last year defensively. Of course, he was perhaps the best all around hitter in the American League so we could certainly live with the defense.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 03:58 PM) If we're talking about bipartisan type picks...Fitz for AG. You even get the Illinois connection, and hopefully you can shut down the concept of "Politicizing the DOJ" in the way that our current disaster has chosen to do. I would fully support that, although we could use Fitz around these parts with as crooked as it is. Then again, he could spend the rest of a natural life that lasts until he's 90 years old working here and he still probably would miss out on getting to quite a few of the crooks.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 03:47 PM) He was giving his speeches on his own, he presumably picked his own VP, etc. Just because a consultant tells you something will work doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. I mean, if a classic consultant got its hands on Senator Obama's campaign, how different would it have been? "A large rally in Berlin? Are you nuts? And that middle name, can we do something about that?" Oh you are absolutely right. It's clear to me McCain wasn't really running his own campaign, and the next question is understandably why would he allow that to happen? Whoever came up with the Palin idea shouldn't be taking credit for it, that's for sure.
  8. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 03:41 PM) Pretty soon white males will be the minority, so I'll go with that. A white male minority president will be elected in 2016. Whites are projected to be the majority until 2042, and even by 2050 are projected to be 16 percent ahead of the 2nd largest group (hispanics).
  9. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 03:44 PM) Until this year, he played RF exclusively I am aware of that, I said all year that watching him play LF made me hope that he was just having trouble adjusting after spending years playing RF because he really didn't look good in the field this year.
  10. Some of that info makes me think even more than I already was that McCain wasn't running his campaign at all. The campaign and the person just didn't match.
  11. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 11:59 AM) Do you really like Q better defensively that JD? I think Q misjudges ball trajectory much more frequently. Yeah, it's a slow day. One of the great myths on this site is that Q is a good defender and capable of playing right field.
  12. Hey Duke, Rahm Emanuel's last name only has one m. Not trying to be a smartass, I'm sure it was just a typo, but yeah. And isn't Emanuel jewish? Could this pick in small part, especially with as quick as it was made, be something that attempts to ease the fear of how Obama will be towards Isreal and people of Jewish background?
  13. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 09:15 AM) I am thinking about the comparisons to Reagan and how they are so similar to what Obama is facing. The previous President (Ford-Carter, Bush) was inefficient, low approval ratings, and with world events seeming bigger than the President. A recent President (Nixon, Clinton) was technically good but morally bankrupt. A weak economy that seems to have bottomed out and poised for a rebound, but in need to consumer confidence. America had been bullied by a little pissant (Vietnam, Iraq) of a country and looking for a hero. Obama, like Reagan, fits adjectives like incredibly confident, charismatic, "movie star", great communicator, teflon, larger than life. We need a cheerleader and someone to make us feel good about ourselves. Very well said.
  14. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 02:07 PM) I have a general question. Why did so many celebs endorse Obama? I understand some have more money than God, but when you look at the athletic landscape, it seems like the majority wanted McCain in office. Just curious. Celebrities are like college students politically. Some are educated on the issues, but a lot of them do what everybody else is just to look cool.
  15. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 01:47 PM) Kudos to Kanye West for speaking out against this mind set among black youth. True, but you still hear "no homo" in a lot of rap songs right now. I'm not sure why this attitude is seen so often in the black community either.
  16. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 01:40 PM) I agree. But why? Perhaps its because it's so much more invisible in some ways. Everywhere I've lived and the people I've talked to in those places are severely saddened, kind of taken off guard that this would fail in California , there are such dramatic differences from town to town in terms of gay relations, but it's just hard for me to see how it exists. This is such a scrambled thought but I'm just wondering how the best way is to bring this up. Obama, this is an issue, take it up. And, take a stand for it. The fact that Prop 8 went the way it did in California really does say something, I was a bit surprised by that. I also read that the reason Prop 8 went the way it did was in large part due to african-american Obama voters, which I found kind of interesting. I don't think Obama will touch this issue though. As for the reason why there is such a large group of anti-gay people in this country is it's just an issue that hasn't been addressed much. Combine that with the large evangelical peopulation, and the fact that the african american population tends to feel the way it does on this issue, and here we are.
  17. As long as he doesn't bring too many people from Illinois into his cabinet. It's fine if he brings a couple, but God forbid the cabinet looks anything like the atrocious government in our state.
  18. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 01:24 PM) Me too. One step forward, one step back. These are our fellow Americans, how could people do this? Well that's easy. This country has addressed a lot of it's racial problems (as we saw last night), we've adressed a lot of things in regards to giving people with disabilities rights, ageism is something you don't even see as much anymore (as we saw with John McCain getting as far as he did). However, we haven't really done much to address our issues in regards to anti-gay sentiments.
  19. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 01:28 PM) Goldwater most definitely had that kind of thing going after losing in 64. Goldwater is why Reagan happened in 1980. And why 1994 happened for the GOP. Goldwater's campaign was about ideology. Absolutely, and the party has lost it's way ideologically in the last decade or so, which is the main reason the balance of power is where it is after last night.
  20. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 01:16 PM) I think that any civil union, marriage or otherwise should be fully equal regardless of it being same sex or multiple sex. That includes the name. We should get marriage if you get marriage. You should only get civil unions if that's what we get. Full and truly equal treatment under the law is what I believe should happen. If the government has to use a different name for marriage across the board, so be it. The churches can do what they want on this issue privately - they do not guard my rights, the US government does. And this is probably how it will end up one day because I would assume most people like me aren't interested in spending time arguing over a word/the name of something. It clearly is going to take a while though, there is still a lot of anti-gay sentiments out there if the votes yesterday were any indication, and I think we can all agree that is sad.
  21. Is it wrong that not only do I have no sympathy for these people, but I also find this story kind of funny? Must just be the idea of Boras squirming. They can go ahead and try to pass the "savings" back onto the fans too, but that will lead to decreased ticket sales and thus, decreased money to go around for the players.
  22. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 12:24 PM) You cant file as married in a civil union on your federal tax returns. You have no federal rights as a couple in a civil union. Well I did not know that, and that isn't right. I am for civil unions and them having true equal rights. I would just prefer gay couples be in front of a judge for their ceremony and have their relationship titled as a civil union and not a marriage. Beyond that, I think everything else should be the same in terms of rights in regards to gay and straight couples. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 01:03 PM) However, every voter should realize (if they don't already) that eventually there will be total equality between civil unions and marriages. It goes step by step and the first step is the hardest. Hopefully you are right there.
  23. QUOTE (Baines3 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 12:00 PM) As much as I would like to see Universal Health Care, I doubt if it ever will get passed. I would be shocked if we ever have Universal Health Care.
  24. If Universal Health Care doesn't pass with the balance of power as of January, I'm hard pressed to think it ever will.
  25. Are civil unions legal in California? To me, civil unions and marriages are very different. I will say I'm not a fan of voiding already legal marriages though.
