QUOTE (tonyho7476 @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 09:48 AM) Getting rid of Kenny seems like the move this off-season, assuming we fall on our faces, and don't make the playoffs. I'm willing to give Ozzie another year. Besides, we have Rick Hahn ready to take over. For some reason, I still like Ozzie....I think because he puts a face on our franchise...although I realize a lot of people don't like that face?!? People are very unhappy with the state and direction of the franchise. I just hope KW does the right thing, fires KW and Oz, and lets Hahn take over as GM and pick his own manager. It would be so refreshing. We'll never forget 2005, but we have to move on from it.

I have nothing to add other than I don't think I can emphasize how excited I am for Saturday. I've missed College Football. Even Thursday and It's few crappy games will be fun. -
Is claiming past their prime power hitters on waivers in late August our new tradition? I love Thome, but this claim won't make a difference. Too little too late.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 03:16 PM) Terrell Thomas tore his ACL, so what! He WALKED off the field! That means he can play! Quitter! /inner meatball I'm not sure a torn ACL in the preseason is quite like what happened with Jay Cutler. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 22, 2011 -> 03:27 PM) I liked Richardson in 2008 because, despite his personal foibles, he was business-minded, and he was reasonable. He was interested in fiscal discipline in a way most Dems weren't, and he had a record of being able to get two-party support for a ton of initiatives. Plus he had foreign policy experience. Huntsman, it is the same sort of story. He's the only guy I see in the current GOP field who seems to be reasonable (this aspect is even more dramatic in the 2011 GOP, where extremism is in vogue), he's got foreign policy experience, and his fiscal mindset while conservative, is not living outside of reality. I'm a huge fan of Huntsman. He's really the only GOP candidate I really like. It's too bad the current political climate, particularly in the GOP, gives him no chance. And you're right, he is the only GOP candidate who is reasonable.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 04:11 PM) One more thing to add on to Balta's points. Yes the Soriano contract is awful right now. But he was the biggest FA out there, and Hendry had the mandate & the OK to sign him, so he did. Soriano was an important player for them in 07 & 08. As they battled for a division crown in 2007, he hit 14 homers alone in the month of September. The Soriano contract has some similarities to the Marian Hossa contract with the Blackhawks (although I think Hossa at his peak is a better player). A deal with winning a championship early on specifically in mind. Regardless of how bad the Hossa contract ends up, the Hawks won a championship very early in it with him playing a big role, so the contract will always seem tolerable. With Soriano, the Cubs did win division titles his first 2 years, but the playoff failures make his contract just look like a total disaster. Especially now that he's not producing and old with the team being bad.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 02:26 PM) Even the Cubs are a step ahead of us now. Well, not yet. Firing Hendry today really doesn't mean more than firing him after the season, unless they have waiver wire plans. But, they have the potential to be ahead of us now, and that is scary.
-
Hendry obviously needed to go, but the timing makes no sense. Barry Rozner suggests it is Ricketts looking to improve his chances with regards to a request for public money by making a popular move right now. I have no idea how such things work, but the theory at least sounds reasonable.

QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 12:46 PM) That's fair, but for fans like us, you can only go by what people in the industry say about him---which is he's ready. All I know is Kenny has to go, and there's a respected assistant GM right under him that wants the job. I think my biggest issue is I kind of have a yearning to see the Sox go outside the organization for their next GM and manager. It doesn't feel like the way our organization operates is working, and Hahn has been here for a long time.

Not sure if it has been posted around here, but a stage collapse during a violent storm at a music festival in Belgium killed 5 more people yesterday. This is absolutely ridiculous. I'm curious how many people have to needlessly die before the weather is taken more seriously at outdoor musical events. There have been several other stage collapses this year as well, but fortunately those were not fatal.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 12:31 PM) Finally found the image I was looking for. You can see what apparently is correctly termed a "Gust front" developed out in front of the main body of storms in this image. It's the lighter blue line showing up in the radar before the big storms. That's the wind burst that hit this stage. They aren't particularly uncommon. It's why the weather needs to be watched very closely at large outdoor events, and people need to be moved before the storm itself arrives in cases where the storm is severe or has the potential to be.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 11:13 AM) The best (only?) defense of Walker is that hitting coaches don't matter. That's pretty sad. It's hilarious. The only defense of Walker implies that we shouldn't have ANY hitting coach. It just shows there really is no defense of him.

I will start this post by pointing out I think Kenny Williams needs to go, and I find Rick Hahn an easy to like and smart baseball man who COULD have a bright future ahead of him as a GM. But, I think the love Rick Hahn gets and the love Rick Hahn deserves are not even close to being equal, and we should not rush into hiring him just because some people are afraid the Cubs might.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 04:08 PM) I can't wait to see this team after losing that senior class that didn't want to lead but at the same time didn't want anyone else leading. These yougner guys seem hungry and want to prove something, I'm loving it thus far. Losing those seniors is going to refresh the program in my opinion. Plus, Bruce has a new AD to impress. I expect Illinois to have a very good season. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 04:35 PM) Heavily recruited by USC, OSU, Miami He's the mush. Seantrel was the #1 player in the nation for his class throughout almost the whole process (on rivals). Ended up #2 I think. Every school in America would want him if he transferred, even if his back is a problem. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 02:25 PM) Eventually it will come out you would think. We all know they paid 200k+ for Cam Newton. It'll come out. It's impossible to keep something like that secret nowadays. I'm sure Auburn is hoping to keep it a secret for 4 years and 1 day though. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:48 PM) He really smoked Dohrman when it comes to investigative reporting. However, the only reason SMU got the death penalty is because they got caught and kept doing the same thing. I dont think Miami will face that, at least I hope not. I don't see any way they don't make an example of Miami. They are going to get the worst penalties (in division I, I think some smaller schools have received the death penalty since) since SMU, there is no doubt about that. You're right that SMU is different in the sense they got caught and kept doing it, but I just wonder if the NCAA is going to take the stance they have to do something extreme to try and stop cheating. Especially considering how many more cheaters have been getting caught in recent years. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:10 PM) Liking the manager/GM is more important than the team succeeding....got it. My #1 hope, obviously, is the Sox make the playoffs. But, if we miss the playoffs and it leads to changes, I'd also be happy. The only scenario that would truly make me completely unhappy is missing the playoffs and no changes being made. -

Reading every aspect of the story, I'm really not sure how Miami is even going to defend itself. The evidence is beyond overwhelming. Charles Robinson deserves any and every award he can get for that story. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:31 PM) ?? This new allegation starts in 2002 (and probably before). So that's 3 BCS bowls in the period. My point is they haven't been to a BCS Bowl the last 7 seasons, even with all of this cheating going on. You'd think cheating on this level would be worth more than that. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:28 PM) 2 NC championship games in 2002 and 2003 and a BCS bowl in 2004. I'd say that's still pretty relevant. I think a bigger issue is Miami really hasn't done a great deal of relevant things on the field in the last several years even with all of these illegal benefits happening. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:22 PM) So if these are all proven, what happens to the players and coaches that arent at Miami i.e. Marve the starting QB at Purdue. If I were those schools, there is absolutely zero chance I'd let those guys on the field this season. Miami has to bench any current players in that report, too, IMO. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 11:49 AM) Rumor is that it was Charles Barkley Haha this would be so not surprising. I wonder if this news would be enough to take away Auburn's title last year.
