  1. Especially Hostetler, for whom I will redefine "nice" to mean "draft a future ML regular on a perennial playoff contender today".
  2. I hope they take Vaughn, getting Adley Rutschman in this organization would be huge. Maybe it would even improve Madrigal's play.
  3. There's some luck and some skill involved. The ratio of each is what is worth debating. That said, there's no reason for any MLB team to not maximize their investment in player development. It costs less than players themselves, and the returns on investment typically are massive.
  4. If he only Ks in 21% of ABs, his K% is much lower than 21%.
  5. I hope that rival executive has no insight into what the Orioles want to do.
  6. If you can draft Adley Rutschman, you draft Adley Rutschman.
  7. Hypothetical: the day after the draft is completed, the White Sox sign Keuchel. What happens? I know this scenario won't happen, I'm just curious about the draft effects in relation to the penalties stated in the CBA for signing a QO FA.
  8. Does Shields have a brother? If so, the Padres should sign him quickly.
  9. He got nearly $1 million overslot. Maybe KC just decided to do that, but I seem to remember hearing something about certain players going lower than anticipated because certain teams could offer more money.
  10. They won't do it, but the White Sox should just game the system by promising Rutschman a $9+ million bonus if he tells other teams not to draft him, similar to how the Royals got Brady Singer to fall to 18 last year. Why not? He's clearly the best player in the draft, and I'd rather underslot the last several rounds and get him than miss out on him and have extra bonus pool to play with.
  11. Apply last year's .344 BABIP and he'll hit .300 or better at current rates.
  12. If he puts up that production, he'll be an all-star 1B or an MVP C.
  13. What did you quote? I can't see it.
  14. Positive regression is a thing. As an example, Willy Adames is due for some positive regression.
  15. With all the WAR talk, just thought it would be interesting (though fairly meaningless) to point out that Moncada would have a 22.7 fWAR season at his current pace. Mostly this points out how unsustainable his current pace is, and how dominant he's been in the first 5 games.
  16. I suppose it depends on the definition you use. If you use the definition I've seen used (50 grade or better in each category), there are more than you think. If you're being more exclusive about it (i.e. requiring a 60 or "plus" grade in each category), then the number will obviously shrink. I don't know that anyone in baseball other than Trout would qualify under the second definition.
  17. I remember reading somewhere that he had a back or shoulder issue that wasn't disclosed. Pomeranz wasn't injured when Boston got him, but they were allowed to reverse the trade by the league, though they chose not to. MLB's reasoning was that the Padres didn't fully disclose his injury history.
  18. He was more injured than the Padres medical records they posted on the system would have led a team to believe. That was the whole issue of the scandal.
  19. 1) Demand the league office reverse the Shields trade in the Padres scandal 2) Rebuild
  20. Cool, then Anderson becomes the super sub backup and still plays 75% of the games.
  21. Anderson to Catcher! Anderson to CF to replace the godawful Engel.
  22. Maybe he got the number from the player side and that's what they were trying to get.
  23. Fair enough, you're the doctor here, and therefore the person whose opinion is most valid. I'm annoyed that 9 months were essentially wasted, but like I said several times already, it's not like this team is on the verge of competing, so the time he misses isn't going to be important.
  24. I never said I know more than them. I was lamenting the additional recovery time being essentially wasted with the benefit of hindsight. Like I said, though, it doesn't matter much because this organization is probably going to see 2-3 more top 5 picks anyway.
