Rienzo is the Truth
We may be reaching a point where we can trade a young, ready pitcher for a decent (not outstanding)haul of young talent. That is promising.

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 03:41 PM) One in the same...except one is still a better glove than the other. So one is a more-elite glove, and one has better history slugging. And the latter is younger, as well. So this is all stuff that is to be determined. Young players. To right now call him a utility infielder is just kind of framing the trade today to suit the narrative you already have going here from the last few weeks. He's a prospect. He has the SLG to become something of a doubles hitting major league short stop, or he can be a backup. There is some range of outcomes for a guy who is 22 and has done what he's done.

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 03:22 PM) Right, which is why you need to get the prospects by giving up the cash in trades instead, which they seem unwilling to do. This is not altogether surprising; these assets we're moving aren't incredibly valuable. Which means you hold on to them if you seek to compete in the short-term, or, alternatively, if you seek to rebuild, you must trade your current assets of value, which we are also apparently unwilling to do. It just looks like we'll be stuck in the middle again with this approach. Do we have proof that great prospects were to be had if we'd just pick up some of the check? Seems like throughout the deadline day rumors we kept hearing about prospects that were requested, yet said requests were denied. In general the era of prospect-boatload-trades are over. Teams now are correctly valuing cheap labor.

Post Deadline Top 10
So how about our first Post-Post-Deadline top 10? Where does Garcia Pt.II fit in

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 02:55 PM) 1) The writing might very well be on the wall with the Alexei Ramirez Era I doubt this leads to any grand conclusions about anything, but we're more just in search of fortifying the wilting flower that has been our system. We're basically getting guys that can pass for real guys who belong somewhere in the top 15 of a real team's farm system. I mean, as much as I love having an Andy Wilkins be a top 15 prospect and all............

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 01:17 PM) This is a pure salary dump of a player that was actually earning his money. But we had just been going on and on about his unending laziness.... like every day..here.

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 01:15 PM) If true, Hahn has turned two of our three best best players on the opening day roster into Garcia and cash. Talk about rookie abuse, lol. If Rios put that 850 OPS up again, i'd be more bitter about this. Lets face it, he's a guy that alternates between being awesome and having a noodle for a bat. He just is...that. He makes sense for a team chasing a playoff spot with a need. He doesnt make sense as a guy who you give up great prospects for.

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 01:15 PM) So, can Garcia get from Durham to the Cell by 7:10? checking megabus... maybe we can get that $1 first ticket with our newfound savings

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
The trade deadline kind of proved that he wasnt worth good prospects+salary relief. So we got the salary relief here in the post deadline deal. To me that makes perfect sense. The way we got this guy is the way he goes out.

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 01:11 PM) We had tons of money to spend regardless. No reason for a salary dump here Something that is better than 'some money' is Even More Money

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 01:07 PM) Not really, but whatever. Rios is gone, and now Garcia will be up. It's moot now. I just dont get it phrased as some contributing reason as to why the trade should be done. They are two totally separate things. You dont do deals of this magnitude, completely altering payroll BECAUSE you dont want to sit Viciedo or Konerko so Avisail can play.
-
Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
If trading Rios is good, then good. But enough of mentioning "now avisail can come up" That was something that could happen whether Rios was traded or not. Jeez.

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 12:31 PM) There is no pressure to dump salary. We have enough money to buy players if we want them. What we don't have is talent and our money can't buy that. Our players can buy that, though While there's no pressure to dump salary, there's the very real fact that dumping salary allows you to have a wider array of options in the future. The next time a big overspender needs to come back to earth and move a still-decent piece, we're going to be there waiting. Maybe not now but whenever that point will be when we're ready to go for it again And it depends on how much we've dumped and how much we've held back on dumping.

Casper Wells claimed by Phillies
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 07:28 AM) We should .275/.391/.484 in the minors, but too old to have trade value. And is cheap. Thus, very clear to me that Tyler's most value is staying here. The light turns on and we have a nice find there or it doesnt and we dont. That's basically where we're at with Tyler.

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
The timeline kind of interests me here. So Texas claimed Rios earlier in the week, yet the news didnt break til now. So maybe they had a lets-keep-it-quiet agreement initially Now maybe the Sox are leaking it so as to make the Texas fandom antsy and throw on some pressure.

Rios, $1M traded to Rangers
If the Sox were only getting prospect-but-we-need-salary-relief offers at the deadline, then we have some leverage now. If the Sox were able to get the whole contract taken at the deadline, but couldnt make a deal...then right now nothing has changed and we have zero leverage. Texas meanwhile sent out these weird signals recently that they would try to sell off some of their veteran talent this coming offseason, i.e. disgust (already) with Garza and so on....so who knows what to believe from them
