If he's hoping to make the major leagues, maybe the White Sox are starting to ponder doing something with Castillo? -

Charlotte gets to DH right? If they have the 3rd catcher, that's a way to get Collins and Zavala at bats at the DH spot. -

A short suspension is an inadequate response to a misdemeanor crime that would land me community service with a misdemeanor plea. -

Worth noting that Yonder Alonso's option vests if he reaches 526 plate appearances this season, coming into today he has 69 plate appearances in the White Sox's first 17 games, which puts him on pace for 658 plate appearances this season. -

My God this Detroit Lineup is terrible. Nothing provoked this specifically other than looking at it on Gameday. -
Far more likely is still Vaughn coming to the White Sox and Collins having a shot at C.

But you didn't throw a ball at him and wind yourself up in prison right? -

Without even worrying about the arbitration deadlines or experience levels, Cease isn't on the 40-man while Fulmer is. They will need to remove a player when they add Cease. -

You may judge Anderson's behavior to be bad sportsmanship. Does that justify physical assault with a weapon? -

Are either of them stretched out to throw 80+ pitches? I think whoever starts, the other will probably be in during the 4th inning. -

People may not want to call it this, but if you were annoyed with someone outside of a baseball stadium and you threw a baseball at them, you go to prison for assault. This is not exaggeration, an average person would face criminal charges for that, regardless of whether it hit them in the butt or not. At some point, I think the legal system cleans this up. -
He at least was a decent prospect for the Brewers when we acquired him but any status he had has been derailed by injury. You don't expect him to be Luis Robert and destroy the league, but if he came up and performed well he wouldn't be the first talented guy to be knocked down by injury only to come back and produce after getting through the physical issues.

That was not in the least what I said in reply to you, not even close. What I asked in reply was - is this the 2013 Cubs or the 2014 Cubs? Because the 2013 Cubs were still down at the bottom. The players who had "arrived" were guys like Castro that they were better clearing out. Only like 1 guy on the 2013 Cubs to open the season made an impact on their playoff team, and that was Rizzo. If the 2019 White Sox are the 2013 Cubs, then you're saying that only 1 or 2 guys from our roster will still be here when this team turns around. For the 2014 Cubs - a lot of pieces had arrived. They stole Arrieta, Soler and Baez made appearances, Hammel and Hendricks were there, they traded for Russell mid-season. So they still had work to do, they did a lot of work during that season, Bryant wasn't there yet, but they were pointing in the right direction. So what I said to you was - the 2 years you cite are fundamentally different. If the White Sox are the 2013 Cubs, then basically Eloy is the only one here who will be on our next decent team. If they're the 2014 Cubs, then they're at least pointing in the right direction. So your choice of years includes 2 very different teams, one of them bottoming out with a bunch of failures, one pointing in the right direction.

Dallas Keuchel signs one year deal with Braves
Balta1701 replied to SweatyFreddy's topic in The Diamond Club
Frankly that'd be a little silly for each of them as who knows what teams could realize they're actually competitive and need a player at that position. No one knows if the Mariners could keep this up, but if the Yankees and Red Sox keep struggling, come June the Mariners might say "you know what we're buying and if it gets us to the wild card we'll roll with it". Tampa Bay looks like a world beater right now, but who knows what other pieces of granite might randomly fall on their cy young award winner. They might have offers on the table, but if they're not accepting them, it's not just the draft pick, it's also that the makeup of the league could change by then. -
Bryce Harper was going to anywhere that paid him more than Stanton's deal. He beat it by $4 million.
-
I'm not the one who said that making sure we could pay to keep our next core together was one of our biggest priorities and I'm not the one who was willing to spend $44 million but freaked out over $50 million 8 years from now. The Herrera move wasn't bad on the day it was signed, it became bad when that priority suddenly appeared and prevented us from making a much more important move. You can't cry poor on the important moves while spending the same money to "ease guys in and maybe get something for them at the deadline." That's the problem. It's also classic White Sox/Classic Rick Hahn - chicken out from the expensive move, spread the same amount of money around on the mid-level guys, act totally stunned when some of them turn into Jay and can't even play.
-
I've noted approvingly that the last couple days there has been a 2b and a 3b on his stat sheet. I'm ok with not seeing HR right now, if he's driving the ball well enough those will come with time, but he has to get those extra base hits because that will mean he's actually making solid contact. Unless those were all bloops that someone misplayed, just watch for the extra base hits, that's the #1 thing I want to see.
-
Amazingly, Todd Frazier's stats when he was traded were hardly different from those in December 2016 even though the HR numbers were down. In 2016 he put up a 105 wRC+ and a .767 OPS, when he was traded mid 2017 he was putting up a 105 wRC+ and a 761 OPS. Like Robertson, he was expensive but fairly paid for those numbers at the time. Probably would have been nice to trade him earlier, but it's not like there would be a big difference in what he would return.
-
I said expensive, not overpaid. A guy who is "paid fairly for 1.5 years" isn't going to get you much at the trade deadline. Maybe a little as a premium for being available right then, but not a ton. With $20 million remaining on his deal at the time, there were a bunch of competitive teams who wouldn't have even been possibilities for him.

2018-2019 Official NBA thread

If point guard is our weakness, well, the likely #2 pick would fill that role quite well. Not much need to look at the trade or FA market if you wound up moving up a little, and the Bulls have a 25% shot at that pick or better. -
Maybe not by that list, but different versions put him at least within the top 100. Here's a BP guy commenting that he would have been somewhere between 50-65, in March Fangraphs had him at #40, here's another page that had him almost top 30. The top 50 shine had probably come off him a little based on his performance in the first half, but I thought we were getting a top 75 guy for Kahnle et al. Kahnle was different from either Colome or anyone else in that he had what, 5+ years of control remaining and was dominating at the time - so he had most of the value, and Robertson was a nice but expensive filler piece thrown in. I would have said most places would have counted him as somewhere in the 50-100 range on averave.
-
Narvaez would probably not be worth more at the trade deadline to Colome. But for a rebuilding team, a team that publicly complained about its ability to afford to keep its core together long-term this offseason, paying $10 million for a catcher and a closer who might be tradeable at the deadline is a couple of expensive luxuries compared with just keeping the $700k a year catcher who at least continues to show promise with the bat, even if he still needs substantial work behind the plate.
-
How does his value compare to that of Soria's last year? Extra year of control yes, but money is comparable - Soria was $1.5 million more expensive. Is 1 expensive year of control the difference between a guy in the 15-20 range in our system and a top 100 prospect? Maybe if Colome has an ERA of 0.50 at the deadline, but if he's doing his normal self then he's maybe a tiny bit better than Soria was last year.
