And that's a White Sox season!
QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 04:28 PM) So? No doubt they are the better team this year. Show me where I ever denied that. But I refuse to slobber all over them for repeatedly drilling the Sox' hitters, high fiving their thug after his thuggish behavior cost them a run and an out when he got a cheap shot into AJ's face to send the Sox a message, and especially after hitting Paulie in the face and then hitting Pierre later in the game even after warnings were issued. A sore loser would whine about losing or not making the playoffs because of something they falsely perceived as unfair -- you know, like the Twins fans and many in their organization did in 2008. I readily admit they beat the Sox and earned the 2010 AL Central title. But I'm not going to fawn all over them on a White Sox message board or root for them in the playoffs. I hope the Yankees/Rays sweep 'em. Blame that on our team being a bunch of p*****s and not retaliating.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 03:54 PM) Could he have possibly done that because of the endless amount of s*** he took when he did retaliate? He's apparently just always wrong no matter what the decision these days. A contrarian view from Jenksy Cat suggesting that everyone else is always wrong? Now I've seen it all.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 08:38 AM) Yeah that was awesome. Renner was fantastic and very convincing as the local thug. And watching Affleck's films makes me wish that there was a young hot shot director from Chicago that filmed in the gritty streets of Chicago. It seems like most films in Chicago almost try to hide the fact that the film is in Chicago whereas Affleck embraces Boston. Yeah, he does and it's pretty cool. I recognized so many of the locations in the movie. I drove past the gravel place (the place where he worked) every single day when I lived there, and I've been past that bar they met in a few times, but I'm pretty sure that's just an empty building in reality. There were quite a few locations I recognized.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 08:21 AM) Thoroughly enjoyed The Town. Almost seems like a Bostonized remake of Heat but it was still quite good. And the main actress in it.... I thought it was great. My favorite scene was this: Affleck: I need your help...I can't tell you what it's about, you can never ask me about it later, and we're going to hurt some people. Renner: Whose car we taking?

Keeping Kenny or Keeping Ozzie
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 02:56 PM) They would pretty much be the same type of managers. I don't see a chance in hell of that actually happening. Don't catchers have a reputation as being the smartest players on the field, as well as good managers? I don't see how they would be too similar, especially since I think Ozzie is the only player to ever be fooled by the hidden ball trick twice.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 01:09 PM) I've been in the group that was hard on Paulie and Thome last year.. Paul Konerko is just amazing, he needs to stay. EDIT: Much respect to Mark Buehrle for retaliation (not sure who's call it was) and going back to the posts from the game thread where some said Mark should have gotten an out before throwing at them or pick Young.. while Young deserved to be beaned, you retaliate first chance you get and Mark did just that, THANK YOU. My inclination is to say that it was Mark's call, as Ozzie has shied away from hitting people in the last few years. I want to use a stronger term than "shied away," but I'll just say it was Mark's call and that's it.

Ridiculously long, good Posnanski article on KW.
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 12:38 PM) Really...we've had 3 playoff appearances in the last 10 year period (October 2000 was less than 10 years ago) and 3 in 11 seasons. That's right about average performance overall...and it's generally above where you'd expect the White Sox to wind up based on the total salary output of the team for the last decade. Oh come on. I'll just wait until October 7th and make my post again, then I'll be technically correct. GTFO.

And that's a White Sox season!
QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 11:22 PM) Bulls***. They take cheap shots, throw at batters intentionally, beat s***ty teams on luck and then lose in the first round in the playoffs. If you want to admire a team like that and congratulate them that's fine --but why don't you do it on a Twins board? You couldn't sound like more of a sore loser. This team beats us on a consistent basis and runs this division. They are better than us, and they are run better from top to bottom.

OK, I called and asked my mom exactly what my grandmother had. She said it was just an infection (I asked if it was specifically bacterial and she said yes, but she sounded like she wasn't really sure). But infections can sometimes have that effect on the elderly, apparently.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 11:57 AM) She is actually a ton better. There was a period of time where she thought still lived and worked where she did 30 years ago. Things are a lot better now. There are still some recent memory gaps, but most everything is back to normal, or close to it. No stroke, no Alzheimer, no drug interactions, nothing psychological, they can't find anything. The frustrating part is that we have no idea what happened, well that and the arrogant doctor who thinks we don't deserve the chance to try to find out something. Something extremely similar happened to my grandmother a couple of months ago. I believe it was a bacterial infection or something similar, which apparently can result in older patients believing they are in a specific situation from years before. Give me a minute and I'll find out exactly what she had.

Ridiculously long, good Posnanski article on KW.
It is a bit disappointing to only have two playoff appearances in ten years. No matter what the team's record was, that really isn't enough appearances.

I watched The Fisher King and Punch-Drunk Love in the last two days. Neither one of them was what I expected...both were a little strange, to be honest. I really liked both of them, and didn't even realize that I watched two relatively serious movies starring comedic actors. Most people (if not all) agree that Robin Williams is a great actor, but I think Adam Sandler really has it in him to be a pretty good one.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 12:24 AM) I had to split Chinatown viewings over two nights. I'm a tired old man, what can I say? But, damn what a fantastic film that is. Godfather Godfather II good. I think this and Cukoo's Nest have to be without question the defining films of Nicholson's career. You can't forget As Good As It Gets, though. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 07:59 AM) Previews make it look like another The Departed, which was one of the most over-hyped and overrated movies in recent memory (from, IMO, the most overrated director currently making movies). I don't know about Scorsese being overrated, but I see your point. It seems like his movies over the last 20 years have gone downhill. The Departed, as you said, was incredibly overrated. He had about seven other movies that deserved to win Best Picture before it, and I think a lot of people agree that it was more of a make-up call for all of the times that Scorsese was screwed. That being said, it was sort of a down year in terms of Best Picture contenders. Letters From Iwo Jima is the one movie that I can say was definitely better. It also doesn't help that The Departed is a remake of a Japanese (I believe) movie, and was said to be the exact same storyline.

The key question for the rest of the year- Viciedo or Morel at third?
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 01:02 PM) Yeah but do you think we can afford to wait for Viciedo to develop some defensive skills? I don't think so. We want to compete every year. Maybe he'll do better with a team like Cleveland that would give him the time he needs to fully develop. So let's get rid of (likely) our best offensive prospect.

Manny Should Just Retire...
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 11:53 AM) The idea of a "rotating DH" isn't inherently good or bad. Would a rotating DH unit of Pujols and Ryan Howard be good? Yes, it would be great. How about one that features Jim Thome or Aubrey Huff? Excellent. How about one that gives the most at bats to Mark Kotsay? Terrible. It's players that are good or bad. And Ozzie is an idiot for demanding Kotsay be on the team and given those at bats. Like I said, it works in theory.

Keeping Kenny or Keeping Ozzie
QUOTE (mmmmmbeeer @ Sep 15, 2010 -> 05:20 PM) What about 3 fourth or fifth starters because, apparently, that's the OP's point....we should have hung onto a bunch of bottom of the rotation pitchers because they're cheap. KW has been an absolute Godsend to this franchise. Our drafts are looking CONSIDERABLY better (see Sale, Beckham, Mitchell), we've stolen some great undervalued talent from other teams, and, other than the aforementioned 4&5 SPs, we haven't given up dick. Not to mention the fact he actually wants to win. Other than a hiccup here or there, he doesn't sign bad contracts that are anchors to this team. OG is the problem with this team. For a guy who has played as much baseball as he has, watched as much baseball as he has, and coached as much as he has...the guy makes some of the most idiotic management decisions I've ever seen....and it's getting worse! You'd think he'd have learned by now what works well and what doesn't but, nope, he just continues to make the same poor choices. I hope he's gone before opening day. Which is opposed to most other GM's mantras of "I really hope we lose."

Keeping Kenny or Keeping Ozzie
I used to want to keep KW and get rid of Ozzie. Then, I didn't care if either went as long as Ozzie went first. At this point, I don't even give a f***. Get rid of one or both, but definitely at least one of them. I'm tired of the same old faces with seemingly no consequences based on performance. The only time there might be a consequence for a member of this organization is if they embezzle money from the team or if they get into Ozzie's doghouse. A head or two needs to roll.

If we don't win tomorrow, it's over
For me, the season ended officially when we lost the third game of that four-game series with the Tigers. We won the first and lost the next two, meaning we could only tie the series. It was do-or-die time, and they just bent over and took it. I only wish I had the optimism of some people. To think that this team is still in it...well, I envy the people who actually believe that.

Manny Should Just Retire...
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 08:46 AM) There is still nothing wrong with the concept of the rotating DH. It's the players that you rotate that are the problem. When Mark Kotsay gets over 80 of those starts, then you have a f***ing problem. Letting your best position players get days of rest, but keeping their bats in the lineup in the DH spot is a great idea. But when they are getting replaced by sub-replacement players (I don't know if thats a word), then the idea looks stupid. The rotating DH is like Communism. They both work in theory.

The Official "Paul Konerko for MVP" Thread
QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Sep 15, 2010 -> 05:20 PM) The thinking of MVP should come from a playoff team is really outdated. Same thinking that the Cy Young award should have league leading wins or close to it. It used to be that most Cy Young winnners are 20 game winners or close to it. But writers are speculating that parameters for the award are changing after Lincecum won it with 18 wins then 15 wins, and then Greinke won it with 16 wins. and this year, many feel that Felix hernandez is the leading candidate with 11 wins. Those players are elite pitchers, though they couldn't win more games because the offense the team assembles is not scoring runs. A player really has no control over what the other players do. This isn't basketball where you can make your teammates better, it's really an individual award. If your teammates aren't performing well, your team won't make the playoffs despite how good you are. If you really think about it, the term value only represent the quality a players brings to a team, i.e. WAR. If a player have a WAR of 8, that means he adds a value of 8 wins to the team, doesn't mean that his team will make the playoffs with those 8 wins the player adds, because his teammates flat out sucks. So why would would give an award to a player with a value of 6 wins, even if his team makes the playoffs? wouldn't you think that a player who brings 8 more wins to a team would be more valuable than a player who would win 6 more games for the team, regardless of playoff berth? I really like your last paragraph. It provides some insight and clarifies the issue well. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Sep 15, 2010 -> 08:38 PM) an example here. so if you feel that Cano is a more deserving candidate than Konerko. What if Cano didn't have A-Rod on the team, and now A-Rod plays for the white sox now, and the sox made the playoffs with the addition of A-Rod. So what if Cano and Konerko posted the same number as they have right now, wouldn't they theoretically provided the same value? so why now would Konerko become more valuable due to the addition of A-Rod? Don't you think it's really unfair to those players if they put up those great great numbers, and their team would have made the playoffs if their GM had surrounded them with a great team? Well, that will probably happen in five years when he's washed up.

What is it that the Twins do?
QUOTE (jphat007 @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 07:45 AM) They have a bunch of kids that come up and put up mind boggling numbers for 3/4 of a year and then fade into obscurity. It's really amazing. Valencia this year, Casilla another year, Trevor Plouffe, Lew Ford, etc etc I don't think I've ever even heard that name.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 15, 2010 -> 10:04 PM) The wife is away at a conference and the kids are asleep. I'm going to watch Chinatown — something I haven't seen in at least 15 years. Saw that a few months ago for the first time and really, really enjoyed it. In the last two days, I've watched Jacob's Ladder and The Fisher King. Again, two movies I really, really enjoyed. For being a serious movie, I was surprised to see a few actors out of place in Jacob's Ladder (Kyle Gass, Lewis Black, and Jason Alexander).
