  1. QUOTE (WCSox @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 05:48 PM) This idea has been floated here before, and it's not a bad one. A potential limiting factor to playing one of them at C and one at DH simultaneously means that another backup catcher would be needed if the one playing catcher were injured and forced to leave the game. This would take away a roster spot from a bullpen arm or utility player. But if taking a bullpen arm out of the mix is possible, I'm all for breaking in Flowers at C by DHing him. He could catch against LHPs, giving A.J. rest. I understand the urge to have a third catcher in that situation, but let's be honest. It would just be one game where the pitcher might have to bat. Somebody would be called up from the minors before the next game even started.
  2. I think it's pretty obvious that we all will now root for the Dodgers, but does anyone actually think they'll make too much noise? I think they get to the NLCS and get bounced.
  3. I like that news. Does anyone else think the ECW belt is f***ing awesome?
  4. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 02:48 PM) ^^^^ That was Tony and Rowand's point. BTW Steve, I was all over the Dunn acquisition months ago.. where have you been.. you don't even notice me anymore.. I know for sure that it's been kicked around on this site for at least the last month.
  5. QUOTE (PeavyTime @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 01:05 PM) You guys can disagree all you want, but I know I'd choose Everett or Thomas and Rowand over Thome and what ever trash we ran out there for the past 4 years. And you'd be a horrendous general manager. You can disagree with that all you want, but I know it.
  6. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 12:35 PM) But before August 1st of that year his avg was .389, 43 HRs, 118 RBIs, .485 OBP, and 1.470 OPS. It's true...I remember it vividly. He went completely hitless through September while grounding into 38 double plays.
  7. QUOTE (WCSox @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 12:03 PM) I'd say that's exactly what they're doing. And, for all we know, Kenny's generosity may result in Thome signing a one-year deal with us this winter. And I don't think it may take years to come out, as he stated. I think it's pretty obvious immediately that the Sox gave Thome a chance to go to a competitor.
  8. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 02:15 PM) So a 6th starter, a utilty guy, and a fringe prospect for 40 HR's and 100 RBI's? 1. The Nats aren't going to give him away 2.The Sox aren't the only ones that would/will be looking at Dunn. I agree that the package he mentioned wouldn't be enough, but I'd also rate Getz as more than a utility guy.
  9. QUOTE (The Critic @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 11:27 AM) It gets trickier the older he gets. It's as if there's a third language in between Dustish and English that I'm not recognizing. Yes, I believe what you're hearing is the accent most commonly referred to as "Coot" in most parts of the country.
  10. QUOTE (hogan873 @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 08:25 AM) Good arcticles. Sad to see Thome go, but he's with a team that can make the playoffs and he really had no spot with the Sox in 2010. I like the Contreras deal. This pitcher in return has a potential good up side. Incorrect.
  11. I have nothing against the starter of this thread, but these are my most hated types of threads, the "here is my opinion on what next year's team should look like because we blew it again this year" type. It just lets me know that we underachieved again and opens the door for thousands of various lineup scenarios.
  12. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 10:50 AM) It doesn't matter what he does on Nip/Tuck or in the rest of his career, he was still in that awful Congo movie. /Ernie Hudson Are you kidding me? Congo was one of those great, terrible movies that comes out once in a great while.
  13. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 10:44 AM) And Jeff Cox. He said "shut down" not "put down"
  14. QUOTE (RibbieRubarb @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 08:18 AM) With Jose...we have no Championship. Thanks for being our Ace in 2005! Wow, give the guy some credit.
  15. I look forward to watching his first start for the Sox some time at the beginning of next baseball season.
  16. QUOTE (elgonzo4sox @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 09:37 AM) Great post. I'm in until the last out of the season is made. There is still hope for 2009 - they still have enough head-to-head games left with the Twins & Tigers. KW hasn't given up on 2009 yet - losing Contreras and Thome doesn't hurt at all for this year (Contreras is a key reason the Sox are under .500 right now, and losing Thome will give more DH time to Q, Konerko and Dye, who could all use some rest by not playing in the field). But they gotta start by kicking some Twin butt, fast, and then beat the flailing Cubs, then do to the Red Sox what they did to the Yankees when the Yankees came to The Cell a few weeks ago. Yes, that is exactly what KW was thinking. It had nothing to do with giving Thome an actual chance for a ring by sending him to a real contender. Jesus.
  17. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 09:10 AM) Someone who is a fan of the team would be in it until we are mathematically eliminated. unfortunately, most folks use the sox as an outlet for their daily frustration, and they were out the first loss of the season. Oh, you're so much better of a fan than the rest of us. To be a true fan, must we watch every game and still think we're in it until we're mathematically eliminated? I'll be watching either way, even though I know we're out of it.
  18. QUOTE (The Critic @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 02:47 AM) Just a few random Dusty-isms: Son of a plumber - he referred to his father being a plumber to further his image as The Common Man Clubberin' (a term he used as an announcer when someone was getting beaten up - "he's takin' a clubberin'!") Pay window (the winner of a match would get more $$ back in Dusty's day, so if you win you "go to the pay window") "If ya will" - Dusty threw that in his promos sometimes ("It's gonna be nasty....a donnybrook, if ya will...") Baybuh = baby Ah, the good old Dusty Rhodes to English translation.
  19. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 12:52 AM) OP says we're getting money. Optimus Prime?
  20. QUOTE (tommy @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 12:38 AM) I was just going to ask.. have we waived the white flag? I would say so, yes.
  21. Another thing I'm glad to see is that KW obviously has packed it in for the season. We don't have to continue watching throughout September with that "we're still in this thing" mentality.
  22. OK, I see how they got very damn good value for Contreras, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this Hynick guy will never turn into anything good.
  23. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 12:07 AM) I don't see it that way. From my understanding if Dye would have been moved he would have had his 12m automatically picked up, so to move him the Sox would probably of had to eat a ton of that contract next year. He'll play the month out and file for FA, Sox won't offer him arb. and he and Thome will probably both be out there Well, that's good news. My ideal is going to be picking up Adam Dunn somehow.
  24. Jim Thome is obviously one of the classiest guys in the game. It's sad to see him go on that level, plus the fact that this means we'll likely sign Dye for DH next year. It's a shame that we couldn't accomplish anything major during Thome's tenure here, so maybe he can get something with the Dodgers. It was nice too see him hit #500 for us, and would've been nice to see #600, but the rest of his tenure here was pretty fruitless.
