I want to say sinker your finger is on a seam which causes the sharp drop, and the best splitters your fingers are next to but not really touching the seam, and your hand creates that downward knuckle motion on the release, so you get the drop in different appearances. That would be a pretty awesome couple of tools in his repertoire to go back and forth from if he can master it
