QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 05:45 PM) Can someone say what Dye and Swisher did? Gameday seems to have forgotten that Dye batted. Dye doubled, Thome to 3rd. Swisher singled, Thome scored, Dye to 3rd.

QUOTE (heirdog @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 12:02 PM) Good point. But in the top 10, you have to try and get the star. I guess I'm just not as high on Beckham as I was on Smoak but I'll get around to it. That is true, but you have to take everything into account. The draft is too much of a crapshoot anyway. A solid SS/2B has more value than a 1B unless the guy is far superior in terms of overall numbers. Looking at it that way, you have to go with defense: Beckham .969 OPS, 13 HRs, 33 XBHs, in 228 ABs Smoak 1.065 OPS, 22 HRs, 38 XBHs, in 260 ABs Not much of a difference with both playing in the same conference.

QUOTE (bullpenHeat @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 12:03 PM) its amazing to me that with the crappy 1b dh types we see on a regular basis suck, that people would be mad that we took a middle infielder who fits our needs exactly. or we only draft a guy who is "signable". Beckham was a solid pick.
-
I am fine with the pick. Between Beckham and Smoak, it probably came down to utility. At worst Beckham can be a useful utility infielder while Smoak is somewhat limited to 1B/DH duties, which seem to be in abundance.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 10:55 PM) Only difference- one team started off 18-5, the other didn't. I hope, I really do, we have a very successful season, I just don't see it. Which team started 18-5, seriously?

Hopefully this means that Big Jim is seeing the ball better which would translate into better AB's. I don't think you can luck into a shot like that. Paulie hitting one was nice to see too. Hopefully both of these guys can start to heat up to take some stress off the pitching staff. Big Jim is also only 2 behind Frank. I didn't think he would catch him this early; and only 3 behind Williams and McCovey.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 11:37 PM) I can't tell you what he did in just the month of May but for the season Carlos Quentin's "clutch" splits are incredible. For as close as CQ and JD's stats are for the month of May Carlos was getting it done when it meant the most. .360/.469/.660/1.129 in 64 PA w/ RISP .412/.565/.706/1.271 in 23 PA w/ RISP & 2 OUT .371/.463/.743/1.206 in 41 PA Close & Late .361/.451/.770/1.221 in 71 PA during innings 7-9 .385/.468/.923/1.391 in 47 High Leverage PA (+ 6 homeruns) Not really trying to put down Dye, I've just been dying to post CQ's splits. He's been at his absolute best in clutch situations. All clutch situations with an OPS over 1.100 is just sick.

QUOTE (joeynach @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 10:43 PM) OMG we now have a 2B who is hitting for a respectable batting avg. Alexi is hitting .275 and it feels like hes hitting .375. Im so giddy lets celebrate . That's because he has. Since May 18th, he is batting .385 with a .985 OPS in 52 ABs. When he gets a better feel for the strikezone and can take some walks, he is going to be even better.

QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 06:46 PM) Orioles lead the Twinkies 4-1...would be nice to get back to 1.5 up Indians also down 6-2. It would be nice to pad the lead on both of those teams if possible.

Greinke had only allowed 7 HRs this season, and has allowed 4 more in 6 innings tonight.

ding, ding, ding, Swisher now batting .199.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 06:31 AM) Someone please try and build a case why Walker is still the hitting coach? We've read forever that he's supported 100% inside the organization and the players seem to like him. What are they seeing that no one else outside the organization seems to see? Because chicks dig the Pop-up?

QUOTE (Frankensteiner @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 09:43 PM) I don't really understand the following: Perhaps I am wrong, but it seems pretty simple to me. The fly balls that were once homers are now warning track fly out. While he has "not lost his power entirely" it looks as if his HR power has diminished to warning track power. But as I've said, it's possible I'm looking at this wrong. The problem is he has hit numerous warning track shots in huge parks. About 75% would have been gone if hit in the Cell.

Major changes coming for Tuesday: Wass is sent down for MMac. Anderson starting full time.

QUOTE (watchtower41 @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 12:06 PM) I never stated that Ozzie was wrong to call out his own team, but that's not to say that his opions are wearing thin with some players and personalities. Ultimately its the players that have to produce.... full teams have quit on a manager before. Again, not saying that will happen either...but it certaily does in every sport. Has a coach on a 1st place team ever been fired during the season?

Plus he has driven in 20% of the Sox total runs.
-
The Sox are 10-1 when they allow 1 run, 6-6 when they allows 2 runs, and 3-1 when they allow 3 runs. That is a 19-8 record when you allow 3 or less. I am sure that it is a game or two below the norm, especially the 6-6 with only 2 runs allowed. However, I don't think a change here would actually give us the "best record" in baseball. In comparison, Boston is 18-5 when allowing 3 runs or less, and they have a much better offense than us. The issue is clearly the offense. They were shutout 4 times in May compared to only once in April. The Sox seem to be riding CQ, and when he doesn't produce, they lose. They are 3-13 when CQ goes hitless, and 4 of those losses are shutouts. Coincidence or not?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 30, 2008 -> 05:40 AM) Also in comparison, the Cubs have played all their games at home, and about 50 percent against the Pirates. Nope, only 31 at home and 12 vs PIT. Man you are way off. We also currently own the best interleague record!

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 30, 2008 -> 05:44 AM) I've always had the impression that people in South Florida just don't care about baseball that much, even in spite of the big Latin population, and that adding 2 expansion teams down there in the 90s was a mistake. The problem was they needed teams there earlier than the 90s. Montreal had a team before the state of Florida. Also, you would think that baseball would be more popular with all the Spring Training teams down there each year. I guess there are too many other things to do during the baseball season. Also, too many old people, rising gas prices, and the war in Iraq.
-
What makes the Sox record even more amazing is the Road games. Right now the Sox have played the 2nd most Road Games (31) and will have the most Road Games played by the end of the TB series (34) - 61%. In comparison, Cleveland has only played 21 Road Games and Minnesota has played 25.

Danks and bullpen with another stellar pitching performance. The offense may be heating up. Paulie goes DEEP!

What are you hoping for in the Rays series?
RME JICO replied to soxfan3530's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (soxfan3530 @ May 29, 2008 -> 12:54 PM) I was bored at work, so I figured I would gauge what people were expecting out of this semi-big series with the Rays. The Rays are currently tied for the best record in the Major Leagues. While they are very talented, they are very young as well. Remember we took 2 of 3 from them on the road earlier this year. We will be facing both their aces keep in mind in Shields and Kazmir. Having said all that I would love a split with a very hot team. What do you guys think? I am hoping for a sweep, but would be content with a split. Anything less than a split would be disappointing. -
It is utterly amazing how many White Sox pitchers end up flaming out, have surgery, or get hurt after leaving the organization. It is like a kiss of death. What can this be attributed to? Conditioning? Workload?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 29, 2008 -> 11:15 AM) I believe he was referring to MIN, not KC. Although even in that case, we're 3-4 against them so far this year. Not like we're getting pummelled or something. Good catch, my bad.
