  1. QUOTE (ptatc @ Oct 10, 2017 -> 04:38 PM) Pitchers playing "Marco Polo" with the ball against Tito Polo. 3K in for ABs. Thread winner.
  2. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 11, 2017 -> 09:24 AM) Didn't it also come across as so tenuous? Like he could come back for spring training, it would beome worse and then he's gone for another year. Yeah, that was odd to me. It seemed awful experimental versus diagnostic.
  3. This is what I was talking about with extension talk for Avi and Abreu both. The system of how arbitration works and what you pay players in specific years is very regimented. With comps and histories pretty tightly laid out in front of you, these guys usually are hitting narrow ranges, and only are really getting paid big at the very back end of arbitration if they have a stellar history. We could look at some scenarios where maybe Avi gets a bit more this year in order to give up a little bit on the free agent year side, but also have a guarantee no matter what he does for the next few years. If he really does like it here, maybe Rick can whip up something that works.
  4. Anyone know what the recovery for the surgery mentioned would be?
  5. Blackhawks offense 3 Bears offense 0
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 9, 2017 -> 05:37 PM) And then this Sunday came another peak (or valley), when Colts ownership allowed Pence to make an appearance to create an outcome that could have been presumed from 1,000 miles away: a political statement cooked up by Trump's administration to stoke his base and once again embarrass the NFL. Pence fulfilled what Trump asked for so many months ago when he urged fans to walk out of games if players knelt during the national anthem. Another self-inflicted injury that will only heighten the political fervor that has swirled around the NFL for weeks. On Sunday night, Jones then said he will not play any Cowboys players who "disrespect the flag." As one league source with intimate knowledge of the protests said in disgust on Sunday, "Why were the Colts stupid enough to invite [Pence] after what Trump has been saying about the NFL? They only have themselves to blame." Whoever is to blame – and whatever football energy is devoured because of it – the NFL's endless political brush fire has more tinder to burn this week. Just the latest iteration of the saga that has gone from a speech to tweets to a walkout staged from the highest office in the land. The cycle moves on another week. Much to the chagrin of the weary executives who are powerless to stop it. https://sports.yahoo.com/nfls-protest-feud-...-002025253.html Allowed him to make an appearance or asked him to make an appearance? That is two different things with very different connotations. I can't see any professional franchise telling the VP no to going to a game, which is very different than inviting him to a game.
  7. QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Oct 9, 2017 -> 05:21 PM) We're all waiting for you to tell us what is evident to you yet the rest of baseball has long discarded. What does it tell you about a pitcher that isn't better explained by advanced value statistics? You're really trying to save pitching wins when it is clear no one uses them any longer. You aren't even justifying W-L existence anymore. They have no justification. It's pretty ridiculous that someone as intelligent as you who has watched Quintana's entire career would put any credence into pitching wins and losses. I genuinely think you're a smart guy, but you're better than this. Yet I am not surprised at all here.
  8. QUOTE (maxjusttyped @ Oct 9, 2017 -> 04:40 PM) It's impossible to know for sure, but I would be very surprised if there's a single front office still using W/L record to evaluate pitchers. In the information age, I highly doubt any teams are eliminating bits of information.
  9. QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Oct 9, 2017 -> 04:25 PM) It isn't an important stat at all. It doesn't tell you anything. That's an extreme example, but a player like Q is the poster child of why wins are a bad stat. They don't tell you anything. It tells you something, and you don't have to be that smart to understand what and how it can be used.
  10. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 9, 2017 -> 04:23 PM) It was. While Bush and Obama may have disagreed on politics, they have always had a respectful relationship. Its fine if you want to normalize this type of s***. Please. Spare me the indignity of pretending like stupid political stunts haven't been normalized forever now. The fake idealism is nauseating. Also this is stupid and hypocritical on behalf of the GOP who used to be b**** about things like how much dresses cost and Bill Clinton wagging the dog.
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 9, 2017 -> 04:19 PM) This probably won't payoff for me but I disagree and I think offense will end up league average. If we become a league average passing team Mitch Trubisky is going to be a star. This receiving core is absolute trash. There might be some college teams with better receivers.
  12. QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 9, 2017 -> 04:00 PM) I'd like to think Bears fans are realistic with him debuting against one of the best Defenses in the league and no WRs. Who am I kidding? We're Bears fans. The thread should just end right here. I honestly think the reason they waited this long on Trubs is that they know this team is garbage and Tom Brady himself couldn't be effective with it.
  13. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 9, 2017 -> 03:54 PM) To me it isnt about sides, which is why I brought up something that would be a more "liberal" position. Same way I wouldnt have supported if someone was invited to a Redskins - Giants game and then left because the Redskins didnt change their name before the game started. Its just common courtesy, it isnt about sides. Maybe its time to stop caring about "sides" and start speaking out against bad behavior. (edit) And its not the "worst thing ever" its just way beneath the office of VP. This is a stunt id expect out of a 12 year old. lol @ common courtesy. That isn't even reality in politics.
  14. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 9, 2017 -> 02:45 PM) Im somewhat shocked that there hasnt been more blow back over the Pence thing. Personally I find it pretty disrespectful to be invited to someones place of business and then you make a spectacle of yourself. Its like going to a friends house for thanksgiving and then leaving because they served turkey. Just terrible manners. Yeah as usual, one side loves it, and the other side thinks it is the worst thing ever.
  15. QUOTE (whitesoxjr27 @ Oct 9, 2017 -> 12:09 PM) I am NOT betting the house. Just bet one of gregs.
  16. QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Oct 8, 2017 -> 09:55 PM) What does a pitching win tell you about anything? The pendulum has swung WAY too far here. While it isn't the most important stat, if you are getting a high number of wins it means you are pitching well enough to give your team a chance to win on a regular basis, while you can get some statistical flukes built into that such as the year Nolan Ryan led the league in ERA, but went 8-16, it is usually a pretty good indicator that a pitcher is doing two things. They are not giving up a lot of runs, and they are pitching relatively late into games. Last I checked, those are two pretty good things to get out of your starting pitcher on a regular basis.
  17. It was nice to see Eddy O in the booth. God speed man!
  18. QUOTE (ron883 @ Oct 7, 2017 -> 02:26 PM) So let's say this guy may have made 8 mil in his career. Do you honestly think we don't aim to double his wealth as opposed to making a mere 300k? I can't think of any example where a player who has made as little as he has so far taking such a monster pay cut. It isn't happening unless there is a handshake deal in place Again, read the initial article about him.
  19. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 6, 2017 -> 10:01 PM) That is so completely beyond the point he was making It is an important one. For as legendary as the Cubs rebuild was, they spent around half a billion dollars to finish it off.
  20. Some good stuff in here. It is very good news to see Cordel is back and playing. http://m.whitesox.mlb.com/news/article/257...g-in-instructs/
  21. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 6, 2017 -> 03:56 PM) This might surprise some of you guys but Rongey's radio show down here is really good. I enjoy the hell out of it. He wasn't half bad until he took on that Score mentality of a professional troll. If he dropped that act, he wouldn't be half bad.
  22. QUOTE (hi8is @ Oct 6, 2017 -> 03:38 PM) What's with the Nats love on this board?
  23. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Oct 6, 2017 -> 03:34 PM) Was Swarzak signed to a minor or major league deal? I forget off the top of my head. He's what I had in mind when I said sign a few guys. MiLB https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/01/whit...ague-deals.html
  24. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Oct 6, 2017 -> 03:10 PM) As bad as the pen was and the likelihood of Hahn using some spots to sign a few veteran relievers, I think that's a good call. I don't think there will be many major league deals in the pen, but MiLB ones. I can't see the Sox spending much, but bringing in some warm bodies to see what sticks.
  25. QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Oct 6, 2017 -> 01:23 PM) AJ is pretty good on the broadcast. I always hoped AJ would end up in the booth with Hawk one day, and then take over for him.
