QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 04:26 PM) I agree about waiting on Avi. I would support an Abreu extension though. It's risky to follow too closely to any plan. Plenty of guys won't work out so it's nice to start with a sure thing. Abreu is about as solid of an investment as you can make in MLB. After four years you have a really nice and narrow window of what you are going to get from the guy. He isn't a guy that depends on speed or defense for what he contributes, so he doesn't really have a skill set that you worry about eroding a lot in this age bracket. It is hard to call a 4 or 5 year deal "safe", but Abreu is a pretty safe bet.

All it takes is the assistant looking to make a deal to screw over Illinois.

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 12:58 PM) Perhaps i'm naive, but I tend to think that for the vast majority of schools and players this isn't an issue. It's an issue for the top level kids, because why wouldn't it? They know they've got a good shot at a future career in the pros, all they're looking for is a place to play bball for a season or two, and when you're the queen at the ball being courted by a number of suitors, why wouldn't you ask for what you're worth? I don't think there's anyway to combat this problem though. There's always going to be a need for this black market. Shoe companies and financial advisers and agents all want to be in a position to sign a guy the minute he declares. And you have the other problem that for the NCAA to enact real change, the NBA basically has to play along, but why would they? They have a free minor league system set up for them. Take Bowen. Odds are he is getting kicked out of the NCAA. So he does something for a year (maybe Europe) and then declares for the NBA draft. No skin off of the NBA's back as they still get their guy in a year.

Pearl again? Jesus.

QUOTE (Quin @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 11:22 AM) Lol if Turang or Singer is there at 4 if we pick there At this point two years ago people would have laughed if you would have said Hansen would have made it to our 1st pick, let alone our 3rd.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 11:04 AM) Agreed, but we also won quite a few games with s*** pitchers that have no future in the org. Those are the ones that sting. Needed those to be 8-7 losses with the young guys mashing & the s***ty pitcher getting lit up. Baseball doesn't work that way. That's why you play the games.

QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 09:41 AM) Agreed. I can't be mad about us falling out of the top three when it is soley because of guys like Moncada, Giolito, Lopez, Anderson, Delmonico, and Garcia. I wish we had a top 3 pick but if we are 4th because of huge strides and promising strides from those players than it is hard to be upset about where we end up.. I have said it a million times and will say it until all get aboard the train... These guys being successful is much more important the difference between the #3 and #5 picks in this draft. If we had gone into next season with Moncada and Giolito both having repeats of their call ups last year, if Anderson had continued his April-July through the rest of the season, if Yolmer had hit like Carlos Sanchez, and Avi hit like pre-17 Avi, etc... our rebuild would have been in huge trouble, and put the entire organizations future into doubt. It isn't JUST draft position. The most important thing is that these kids are turning into big leaguers once they get to Chicago.
