2017-18 official NBA discussion thread
QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Sep 15, 2017 -> 11:33 AM) They got a short, 28 or 29 year old PG "star" who can't play defense and who has legitimate hip problems on a one year deal. He's not even going to play a full season. They're going to have to decide whether to offer him a max deal, or near max deal, to be their franchise player once Lebron leaves. I wouldn't want the Bulls to be in that position a year from now. That's a hard, hard pass. They got a 27 year old Jae Crowder, an ok role player who can't shoot very well and has had his own problems with injuries (ankle) that Celtics fans will tell you limited his defense (the one reason you would want him) They got Ante Aizic, someone who will probably never play. And they got the Brooklyn pick, which may or may not be great. The Nets won't be good, but the east will be super s***ty and the Nets have no incentive to tank. The Bulls, Pacers, Hawks, Kings, Magic are going to be worse. Are the Lakers really going to win 25-30 games? It'll be a lottery pick, but not necessarily a top 7 pick. On the other hand, the Bulls got Zach Lavine, a 22 year old super-athlete who averaged 19, 3 and 3 last year and has consistently gotten better each year he's played. The ACL tear is worrisome but plenty of guys have come back from it. They also got a big, beefy PG prospect that had a bad rookie season playing under Thibs (not uncommon) but still has tons of potential, and the #7 pick in the draft who at worst will be Niko 2.0, i.e., an ok role player. I don't see how, in any way, this is a substantially worse deal than what the Celtics got. They got the NBA's leading scorer. As much as you want to undersell Thomas, he is Derrick Rose in his prime.

White Sox Winner !
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 15, 2017 -> 02:26 PM) If they could get TA to walk some more....TA/Yoan 1 & 2 on the basepaths would be awesome. That could Alomar and Lofton kind of action at the top of the line up.

Adam Engel
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 15, 2017 -> 01:29 PM) So regarding Engel's lukewarm defensive metrics...I trust this more https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/outs_above_a...2017&min=50 God I love baseball savant. The interesting bit there is that it rates Avi as completely nuetral. 0.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 15, 2017 -> 01:31 PM) What if we signed Avi to 4/60 right now? Buy out his Arb years and get a 2 year extension? edit: I'm not really advocating htis, I'd rather we just let him play and then if he's still good either let him leave or sign him. But I question the "he'll get 100million" ideas. For where he is on the arb scale, that is even a bit high. It would be more like 4/50. 6/12/15/17. Technically he is a few days short of having 5 years in the service scale, so if he went to arb he'd be looking at something like 5-7 million.

Are we allowed to get nervous about Moncada at this point?
QUOTE (SCCWS @ Sep 15, 2017 -> 11:57 AM) I absolutely agree. But I am also left w a little sour taste. Where the hell is the coaching staff that a player sees something they should be seeing as well. Ugh. Realize that sometimes it just takes hearing something from a different person a different way can make all of the difference. Just because it happened after Abreu said it doesn't mean it hasn't been said already.

Police keep killing black people
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 15, 2017 -> 10:41 AM) Dude was caught on camera screaming "we're going to kill this motherf***er" but hey, good shoot. I'm sure all of the Good Cops involved in this scenario faithfully and truthfully reported the incident and actually tried to stop it before Smith was murdered, just like the good cops stood up to that thug who assaulted the nurse in Utah and the good cops who made sure Laquan McDonald's murderer was held accountable and didn't willingly participate in a cover-up. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 15, 2017 -> 10:54 AM) That's the go-to example of why ad hominem fallacies are bad, dude. Just because Hitler supported interstate systems doesn't say anything about interstate systems one way or the other. Just because two groups both have a more isolationist bent than the warmongers who love to bomb bomb bomb doesn't say anything beyond that one overlap. I can't believe these two posts were made within minutes of each other.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Sep 14, 2017 -> 08:34 PM) Such risk could be mitigated by a shorter term deal with mutual options. Something like: 2018: $25 million 2019: $10 million 2020: $10 million 2021: $15 million (mutual option w/$5 million team buyout) 2022: $15 million (mutual option w/$3 million team buyout) 2023: $15 million (mutual option w/$1 million team buyout) This guarantees 3/$50, the frontloading makes the contract less of an albatross if he busts, and if this isn't a mirage, the Sox have the potential to have a middle of the order bat on a 6/$90 deal. Just as an FYI, he is about to hit his 5th year contract which is typically in the 7-10 million range on the high end.

2017-18 official NBA discussion thread
QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Sep 14, 2017 -> 04:42 PM) Given the value that Indiana got for George and Cleveland got for Kyrie, I'm not sure how anyone can say that the Bulls "blew" the deal. If the argument is they should not have dealt him in the first place, fine, but the return was good, if not great in comparison. Cleveland got an incredible deal for Kyrie. That is the type of deal we should have gotten. They got a star, they got players, and a top of the draft pick. That was phenomenal.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 14, 2017 -> 08:19 PM) On the contrary, how much does it hurt you if you give him an extension and he busts again? You don't have a lot of payroll obligations, it's not like you have a small window to compete due to age. You might be more willing to take the risk on him than in a different situation. If you pass on him, you are also assuming that your prospects can be better, which is never a given. That's why the GMs get big bucks or fired within 3 years. (Unless they work.for JR) Sure, but the time he would be in his expensive bust years would be the point where this team should be adding payroll. A $15 or $20 million a year anchor could really F things up.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Tony @ Sep 14, 2017 -> 07:58 PM) Pretty solid take, Lillian. I can't put myself on the trade Avi bandwagon yet. Based on his age, I just don't agree that he won't be a solid contributor when this team is supposed to compete. The question isn't as much trade Avi or not, it is do you believe in him enough to give him a big money multi-year extension? If you keep him around, that is the point you are getting too. We saw what a pure hitter at the of his contract was worth this season, so the window is narrowing quickly to get anything for Avi.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Sep 14, 2017 -> 04:47 PM) Given the fact he started a "Why can't we compete next year" thread, we're going to be lucky to win a game next season. #1 pick, here we come!

Sox not in teams watching Otani
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Sep 14, 2017 -> 03:50 PM) Here's a question: What if some team did violate the rules to get him to sign, he plays in MLB for a year, then his contract is voided? He's already a member of the player's union at that point. Does the voided contract make him a free agent? If so, is he still subject to the same restrictive rules? Would anything prevent him from resigning with the team with which he'd just played a full season? Could a voided contract be Otani's way around the new restrictive rules, allowing him to get the best of all worlds (enter MLB at 23, get mega deal at 24)? When MLB voided the Boston contracts, they also banned them from international signings for a period of time. My guess would be that it won't be the initial contract that would be a problem, it would be any additional extension which would come later. But if it were proven that the initial contract violated the rules, yes they could void it and make him a free agent again, and block the violating team from signing him again.

2018 MLB Draft
Hahn got screwed by the Padres on that deal with the dual sets of medicals. It still pisses me off that MLB did nothing about it. You could tell the guy had back and/or shoulder problems when we got him by how he reacted trying to stretch after many pitches. Now he can't even throw over the top anymore.

Since this thread was started, Moncada has gone from a .179 batting average and a .649 OPS to a .230 batting average and .762 OPS.

Yoan just hit a homer!
QUOTE (Scoots @ Sep 14, 2017 -> 02:45 PM) I do remember Hahn saying that. I guess I would disagree then with saying he will probably be traded, as I think the Sox would need to be blown away with another Eaton-esque kind of offer based on the kind of production and value Avi has made for himself this year. Not saying it won't happen, but honestly, I think with Avi pretty much doing what he has done all season without his average even dipping into the .290s, and that outrageous BABIP, I think he has pretty much shown this is not a fluke. In my honest opinion, if this is the real Avi, you likely will not find a prospect that a team is willing to give up that has the potential to do consistently what Avi has done this year. Can you imagine if Avi puts up similar numbers in 2020/2021? And with his age, it is very much a possibility. I mean, nothing is 100%, but. A trade of Avi including anyone short of the top prospect in baseball and then some, I would think is a lost trade on the Sox end. Just my 2 cents. Avi has two more years of control. With the arc of the White Sox he won't be here on the next playoff team unless he is extended. I think the Sox trade him to find someone who will fit into that window.
