2017 International Signings
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 02:36 PM) Maddon opted out from Tampa Bay. He certaintly bent the rules on that one. The Cubs tampered with him as to the status of his contract in order to try to get him to opt out.

Most Airlines just don't seem to care
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 01:54 PM) There's probably something in the contract language when you're buying your ticket stating that they can select you to be removed at random for an overbooked flight. I am 100% certain that this is true. The problem isn't the legaleze being solid. The problem is that even if UAL had to give out 10k in vouchers, it was worth WAY more than the millions of dollars in bad publicity that they just generated. How many people watching that video won't book with UAL going forward? On top of that people are going to be remembering that video for a long time, so if UAL is going to bump people, it is going to be way more difficult and expensive for them to do. It is penny-wise and pound foolish for United.

2017 NFL off season thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 01:05 PM) I continue to be amazed how little people care about the Bears this offseason. if you aren't a fan of the Cubs, there really isn't a worst time in recent history to be a fan of Chicago sports in general. While the Hawks are on their run, they are a long way behind the Bulls/Bears/Sox in terms of popularity and relevancy. The Bears are the #1 team in Chicago, and are absolutely surrounded with mediocrity right now. They have to be blowing through their season ticket waiting list at a record pace.

Tank for Beer
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 01:12 PM) That, or the Sox just haven't loved what has been offered yet The Q hammer will fall eventually Which means the market isn't nearly as good as the Sox think it is, which is kind of the point.

Cody Asche
Asche is another one of those kind of guys who you grab a pile of in a rebuilding situation. You literally have nothing to lose here. If he fails, you cut him, and you miss out on nothing. He isn't really blocking anyone of substance (and no Davidson isn't of substance, he is in the same boat as Asche). If you get one guy like this to succeed, you gained an asset for zero cost to the organization. The same goes for Avi, Davidson, W Garcia, R Liriano, etc.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 01:37 PM) How so? Starting with how he got his manager for one.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 01:14 PM) I will be shocked if MLB truly cares. The owners wanted price certainty. The MLB wants best players in game to play there. There won't be many more situations like Otani. They'll say not in spirit of rules and maybe change it in next CBA. There are 29 other owners who will want blood, as it means they will have missed out on this guy because of it.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 12:50 PM) Theo made a living by bending the rules. Do what you have to do. It is also how the TWolves lost 5 years worth of #1 draft picks. It is also worth mentioning that the White Sox ownership group did not want this current commissioner elected and worked very hard to elect someone else.

Tank for Beer
QUOTE (Soha @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 11:34 AM) Collectively there is more value, sure. Individually, no. I'm sorry, but Quintana isn't going to bring back a Chris Sale type return. And it probably won't even be close. I think some of us will need to grasp that at some point. Teams just don't want to part with superstar potential prospects, except in rare cases like when guys like Chris Sale are made available to trade. So far at least, this has held up to be true. Sale and Eaton both went quickly on the trade market. The Sox got a huge price, and got it almost immediately. Q has sat on the market all winter long, as as far as we can tell, the Sox aren't even asking for as much as they were with Sale, and still haven't gotten it paid by anyone. In fact, as far as we can tell, teams are still not willing to pay that reduced price.

Most Airlines just don't seem to care
Wow, what a disaster. Someone is getting fired for thinking this is a good idea. No matter what they had to offer to get people off of this flight, it was worth less than the PR disaster they are watching all over media and social media today.

Tank for Beer
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 11:03 AM) I think it pretty obvious that the Sox are going to get a high pick. However, there is much more value in the players that can be acquired for Quintana, Jones, Robertson, Frazier, Melky, Jennings, Gonzalez, Holland, Putnam, someone taking Shields contract, than there is is wanting all those players to contribute to a 60 win team. The players that can be acquired on a whole for the current veterans far outweighs the difference between the 3rd pick and the 7th pick, IMO. We need those aforementioned players to have a good first few months. Frazier pulling his head out of his rear would be a good start. Think of it this way. If Avi Garcia really turns into anything close to what he could be, what would a player like that be worth on the open market? Is that difference worth more than the difference between say #6 and #1 in the draft rounds? I would say the trade value is absolutely higher, based on what we have seen players go for in the trade market.

'17 Breakout Prospect
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 07:25 AM) One argument to make here is, his "story" itself gives him an edge. His Olympic experience gives him an edge in handling the daily grind, and knowing what "it" takes. Just adding a thought here. To some extent, the guy has seen pressure at a level that is probably equal to the World Series by succeeding at the highest Olympic levels. He obviously has the fortitude to handle himself. Now the question is how can he make himself viable into a team that already has Tim Anderson, Yoan Moncada, and Tyler Saladino up the middle. The answer is that even if he is good enough to push himself to the major league level, there is probably no where for him to go here.

'17 Breakout Prospect
QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 12:22 AM) Delmonico will be the big surprise. Considering he almost made the team out of spring training, I don't think you can call him a surprise.

Some love for Zack Collins
QUOTE (ptatc @ Apr 7, 2017 -> 02:56 PM) What if it takes an extra 2 years to catch up defensively before he makes it to the MLB. Is it worth it to have his bat out of the MLB line up for two years? Realistically? There isn't a good reason to start his clock for a couple of years anyway.

Trade Assets
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Apr 9, 2017 -> 11:05 AM) Jennings should net a decent piece or two. Same with Putnam. Big being controlled through 2019 is valuable. I bet Putnam gets undervalued because he doesn't throw hard.

Avi Garcia tendered a $3 million contract
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Apr 9, 2017 -> 08:58 AM) Ya, it's not like we have a legit prospect ready to take his spot. As you said, some guys take longer to develop for whatever reason, no reason not to let him get all the at-bats this season and see what happens. I'd be a whole lot more on the cut Avi bandwagon if we had something to replace him with.

Avi Garcia tendered a $3 million contract
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Apr 8, 2017 -> 09:40 PM) In the sense that since this is a tank / rebuilding year...yes. Let them bring a kid up to see how he'll do. You already know what Garcia's going to give you. Mark What kid? There is literally no one who is even close to deserving a shot at RF right now.

Avi Garcia tendered a $3 million contract
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 8, 2017 -> 05:32 PM) No offense, but this is just a bunch of lazy BS. Don't do the generic "there's got to be someone better" crap. Look at our AAA depth chart and tell me who should get a shot right now in RF. I'm no Avi fan, but right now he is the best man for the job. That may not be the case in a couple months, but until someone shows themselves worthy it should be Avi's job to lose. This. Garcia is probably garbage, but our depth chart is even worse.

Updated teams interested in Q
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 7, 2017 -> 02:24 PM) The Dodgers have like 8 guys who are projected to up 2+ WAR/160 IP. They won't be interested in Quintana. The problem is that staff is a an injury train wreck to a large extent.

2016-17 NHL Thread
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 5, 2017 -> 12:21 PM) Yeah, yeah, I know, I can't disagree with anything you say, but I don't care. Olympic hockey is awesome at the top level and it's worth the risk for me. Maybe I'd feel differently as a Caps who never win anything. I freaking love Olympic hockey. The bigger rink and the lack of physicality just makes for a beautiful display of the skill players.

Updated teams interested in Q
QUOTE (Nokona @ Apr 5, 2017 -> 08:03 PM) There's been lots of talk of Clint Frazier in this thread (and in general). There were some reports that he asked the Yankees to unretire Mantle's 7 for him. Cashman said it wasn't true to be fair. But this is another mini-controversy that seems to follow him. The version that I heard is that he asked for #7 ignorant of who it belonged to and that it was retired.

Opening Day 4/4/2017 - White Sox vs Tigers
QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Apr 4, 2017 -> 04:54 PM) Well, theoretically you'll get years where the White Sox will have good young talent but they haven't come to fruition (Like when Rizzo and Castro were up on a bad Cubs team). If we are lucky.

2017 Republican Thread
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Apr 4, 2017 -> 04:45 PM) Im dont want to mess up your thread, but I think that this statement is outrageous. If I am having an argument math and someone says: 2+2= 5 and then goes on to tell me about mathematical equations, I have every right to question whether that person should be believable when it comes to math. BS. With all of the equal rights pushes, you can't talk about things like gay rights, and then try to disqualify someone's believably level because of something like that. It is hypocrisy.
