  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 11:59 AM) Of course. The strategy is to dehumanize your opponent. The first step is to think of an easy thing to label them with. It is politics 101. And in that same vein, we really should quit pretending that the true right wing is a new thing as well. There have always been ultra-nationalists in politics. There are always been some pretty extreme religious views in politics. Their have also been some pretty disgusting racists to even hold office. I know Indiana had a Klan member for a governor in the 20's along with most legislators. Woodrow Wilson screened Birth of a Nation IN the White House. None of these things are new.
  2. QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 11:56 AM) I don't really think it's authentic, she is not that magnanimous, she's ruthless. I'm not a "both sides do it" kind of person but in this case they really do. It's hilarious to me when I hear conservatives talk about how far left Obama is. When he ran he was the "most liberal senator in U.S. history" according to whatever that organization is that makes these sorts of things up for them to cite, but so was Kerry. Both of them are ordinary center-left Democrats, though. Even Sanders isn't that far left. There is no organized political left in this country basically. Of course. The strategy is to dehumanize your opponent. The first step is to think of an easy thing to label them with. It is politics 101.
  3. QUOTE (captain54 @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 11:53 AM) You don't have any problem dishing out daily insults towards Sox fans… Questioning the loyalty of a lot of us who have been thru thick and thin as Sox fans for nearly six decades…. But yet, you can't handle a little good natured ribbing about NW Indiana SW MI.. You are TRULY a piece of work.. This from the guy who is crying about being called a JR hater for routinely hating on the teams ownership. Yeah, um, ok. Apparently comprehension really is a fleeting skill.
  4. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 11:51 AM) I'm all for an acquisition of Puig. Desparate times call for yadda yadda. Normally I'm a bit leery of NL hitters but not Puig. The talent is so huge and the price supposedly so low there should be serious consideration given to acquiring him. A guy like Renteria might be a good manager for him. I am torn. He could be a guy who in a place like the Sox could thrive, or he could crater. He won't have the media eye on him like he does in LA, and the atmosphere is a little more friendly and protective of the players. Of course that could backfire too. Honestly, if the Dodgers were really giving him away, i would take a chance on him. His deal really isn't that big, and the upside is worth the bet. He doesn't have long left on his deal anyway.
  5. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 11:24 AM) I've been covering prep sports around Chicago for about 10 years and decided to try and get a podcast rolling as prep coverage diminishes. You can check it out and subscribe and rate and praise me here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/preps-3...st/id1145670228 Shameless plug Good luck man. As someone who has been on that end of HS sports for a long time now, I love it. Hope it goes well for you.
  6. QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 11:37 AM) This guy has a similar take to what I did about Clinton's intentions with that speech. In Her Alt-Right Speech, Hillary Gave the GOP a Mafia Kiss Ha, there is one clear theme here... All three are people that the Democrats have painted as extreme right wingers. They have been saying the same thing for so long, that no one even notices when an actual right winger comes along. In fact they have been crying wolf for so long, they had to come up with a new label because the old one meant nothing anymore. I mean I get her playing to the middle now, but I don't get pretending that it is authentic.
  7. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 10:09 AM) What else is Hahn going to say here?? We will see how the off season goes to see who is really running things.. If it's another half ass reload we know it's not Hahn. No comment.
  8. Yeah, I think Rodon had a way bigger hype leading in. I think he was the clear 1-1 for a long time while in college, while Hansen was a possible 1-1.
  9. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 09:39 AM) I'm going to take this opportunity to point out something I was way wrong about. When money policy was so significantly loosened during the depths of the recession, along with the dramatic increase in government spending, I had major concerns about a big inflation snap-back when the economy did eventually heat up. This was based on history, in terms of the typical rates of acceleration out of the bottom. But something odd happened - the recovery was much less sharp, more gradual than really any other we've seen. As a result, we didn't get the snap-back. In some ways that's a good thing. The one danger with it, though - the rates are still pegged so damn low because there wasn't that spike out to respond to. Now, with a pretty healthy economy, rates didn't go back up, which means the Fed has very little wriggle room if things turn south. So there's a danger there too. It is the oddest correction I know of. After nearly a decade, the economy isn't healthy enough to sustain an actual interest rate. Numbers don't agree with each other on how healthy the economy actually is. By traditional measures, the economy should be overheating, but we are still sitting on minimal growth and inflation.
  10. If Bosa doesn't sign, what happens? Back into the draft next year?
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 08:03 AM) So am I. The college experience isn't just going to classes, it's supposed to be students' first time "on their own", learning to deal with life. The whole trend towards safe spaces and assorted other sterilizing B.S. is stupid and at odds with the greater purpose of education. When some ignorant Trump supporter talks about liking him because "he's not P.C.", I cringe, because what they really means is "he's an asshole that makes me feel OK with treating others like garbage". But where I DO agree with the people who decry the "P.C. Police" is if the people listening to Trump or the like expect to get some sort of special protection from them. No, these are people you share your campus/city/country with, and as long as they aren't assaulting you, you'd better learn how to handle disagreements like an adult. Argue back, walk away, whatever, but in the real world you won't get some protective bubble in which to live in blissful ignorance of any reality outside the one you accept. I can't say enough the difference between someone who just disagrees and how to intelligently engage someone and learn what they are thinking, and why. I don't know if it is social media making it easier to find people who agree with whatever you think that has made people so much less appreciative of anyone who doesn't fit in their tribe, or what it is. But there is no respect for anyone else anymore. Everyone is at war with someone else. Everyone is labeled to make it easier to tear down. Then that is used to justify going after someone else and the cycle repeats over and over again. One of these days people will learn that you get more out of people you don't agree with, than the pack mentality with people you do agree with.
  12. The fun part is that Brazil has refused to extradite a whole bunch of people back to the US, so they probably wouldn't force Lochte back anyway.
  13. Very happy to see this.
  14. QUOTE (captain54 @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 09:01 PM) Nice try, but a...no. The roster has turned over multiple times, yet the status quo of the front office remains. Those involved in throwing something against the wall to see if it sticks, are given opportunity after opportunity, despite the franchise bring stuck in quicksand And let's knock it off with the "Reinsdorf Hater" crap, shall we? I'm one of JR's biggest critics as far the transgressions of the ballclub, but personally I've dealt with JR thru charities and he's one of the nicest guys you could meet. I don't "hate" people unless they've committed some act of atrocity. I'm sure most JR critics feel the same. Of course, I get that you need to paint people into this lunatic box in order to flesh out your narrative. But please, knock it off. It makes you sound like you're in Junior High But completely unrelated jokes about people's home towns are evidently kosher, got it. If you want to play the maturity card, at least pretend to live up to it on your end. GMAB. You evidently can't handle a debate without resorting to insults, but then you get upset when someone calls you on your hating of ownership? Yeah, OK. I think you might not be ready for the sandbox.
  15. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 10:44 PM) I don't know what "sup" means. I've seen ISU athletes in basketball tear their meniscus. One player went down the championship season in the Big Sky at New Mexico State in mid-November. By the start of conference play in early January they were back in the starting lineup and played the rest of the season. Mark It means not all tears are created equal. http://www.si.com/nba/point-forward/2013/1...n-chicago-bulls
  16. Dan Hayes ‏@CSNHayes 5h5 hours ago Brett Lawrie's knee and calf are being treated. But #WhiteSox are hopeful he'll return in near future.
  17. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 06:49 PM) Hahn just said that today before the game meeting the media. Said they are "likely" done for the year. Among the things he said was that there is no rift between him, Jerry or Kenny and that they all want to move the franchise forward "to get us on an extended period of success even if that involves a short term step-back." He said that Navarez "put himself on the map for the next several years of playing some sort of role on this club going forward. He has opened some eyes." He also said Davidson and Jackson are "likely" out for the season. Just being around athletes myself at Idaho State my sense is Jackson must have done something more then just tear a meniscus. Normally if it's just that you don't miss three and a half months. Mark Derrick Rose said sup.
  18. QUOTE (Scoots @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 07:30 PM) How short of a leash is Garcia on? No reason not to play him now. The season is over.
  19. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 03:09 PM) Loyalty is a two way street of course and as we discussed my opinion is that sports fans are under no obligation to support a bad product. No different from any other type of business and sports today is now a billion dollar business. You disagree with that and have made that clear consistently. Again I disagree with you but I respect your consistency. If the Sox want an average of say 2.5 million fans a year...fine, win 90 games three seasons in a row and they'll get that. Not have a winning season at least in six out of nine years...well that's a tough sell for anybody. Mark That is where you are wrong. These teams do exist. The Sox are just not one of them.
  20. FutureSox ‏@FutureSox 3h3 hours ago Carson Fulmer at 63, Zack Collins at 89 on post-draft updated @MLBPipeline Top 100 MLB prospects list: http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2016/?list=prospects …
  21. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 02:24 PM) Fixed Eh, not really. The numbers don't actually back that up. Even when the franchise was at its absolute peak for attendance, they finished 9th in attendance in 2006. For 2008, when they had their 2nd playoff appearance in 4 years, along with a World Series title, they ranked 16th. The season after those appearances they still ranked 16th. Realistically, even if your scenario had happened, they still lag the best franchises out there in terms of fan turn out. History proves that out.
  22. QUOTE (captain54 @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 02:05 PM) Every year, it's a roll of the dice.. the fan base is tired of it… the roster has been turned over numerous times in the last few years and have produced ZERO results.. which gets back to the "trying" issue again.. by maintaining the status quo in the organization, despite the results, it sends a message to the fan base that you are tolerating mediocrity…. Now if you want a real example of arguing with yourself...
  23. QUOTE (captain54 @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 01:55 PM) The gymnastics I am going thru is trying to debate in circles with you…. one more time.. your comment from 7:16 am today... Eh, you can rationalize this all you want, but you are still missing the essential truth at the base of it all. If the fanbase invests in the franchise, the franchise is better for it. If they don't, they are worse off. The results of the fan base are right in front of you. The thread may have been about the ballpark deal, but you CLEARLY are taking an opportunity for another dig at the Sox fanbase…. You obviously take offense to anything resembling discussion about the fan base. I understand that, as I see people bothered by it all of the time. What it does not change is the truth. The White Sox would not be signing a third rate ballpark naming rights deal if the Sox fan base was more loyal. I know it hurts your feelings, but it is the honest to god truth. What I have never done is make a judgement of what the fans should or should not do. All of that is the manifestation of someone who is working harder than most at being offended.
  24. QUOTE (SCCWS @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 01:32 PM) 2006 followed a great year in 2005. Valuation jumped by $53 million. 2007 was a disaster and first losing season since 1999. So 2008 valuation jumped by $62 million. When a team continues to make money, some owners (sports or business) are very content to let it sail along. However, there are also owners that continually strive to improve the business. I live in Tampa part of the season and see a franchise that is constantly milking the situation and cutting costs rather than invest in the team. Then I spend part of the year in Boston. Unfortunately they aggressively try to improve the product. They make trades and fire coaches, managers, and front office when the product on the field is not meeting a high standard. I think JR is more a Tampa type owner than a Boston one. In fairness, his age may be the main reason he is content to put up with mediocrity. The White Sox have made a ton of roster moves for years now. They are not content. Again, those moves haven't resulted in good results, but they haven't been content.
  25. QUOTE (captain54 @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 01:25 PM) For starters.. let's look at your comment from 7:12am today, to Lip: "Reading what you post is completely different than what you just said" Then we have your comment from 7:16 am today to Thad Bosley "If the fanbase invests in the franchise, the franchise is better for it. If they don't, they are worse off. The results of the fan base are right in front of you. Any reasonable person would assume a couple of things from this comment a) you personally have an extremely negative view of the Sox fan base b) the source of th e Sox woes are their whiny, disloyal, unfaithful fan base. Your backpedaling is furious and impressive…I'll give you that.. You could generate the power necessary to supply the towns of Michigan City, all the up the Red Arrow HW to Sawyer, MI, with enough electricity for a year... Way to take it out of context. The entire thread has been about the ballpark deal. That is exactly what that was about, and it was stated as such multiple times. With the I think Simone Biles would be impressed with the gymnastics you are going through here to turn this into something else.
