2015-2016 NBA Thread
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 12, 2016 -> 12:12 PM) Yea, but it took a lot before that happened. MJ may or may not have gotten busted, but I would lean on the side of him being about to successfully stay out of it in order to maintain his image, because he knows how much his image is worth Jordan was also involved in a lot of nasty things that social media would have loved to run with.

2016-2017 NFL Thread
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 12, 2016 -> 12:14 PM) Former Bear Eben Britton wrote about being a functional drug addict in the NFL. Some pretty crazy stuff here https://thecauldron.si.com/what-does-it-tak...ab00#.mrja0t8zt Interesting what he says about the 2014 bears team after they got smoked by NE That is an impressive read. Bravo to the guy stepping up to publicly out himself to make the story.

Automobile Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ May 12, 2016 -> 11:55 AM) Hey parents - we'll need to get a bigger car than our 2 door yaris. Wife likes the rav4 hybrid. Having never bought a new car, I'm hesitant. What's the consensus on these mini suvs. I'd rather just go balls out and get a 1980 volvo stationwagon. We had a CRV for years, and that worked nicely. Just upgraded last summer to Honda minivan for the wife.

2016 Catch All Thread
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 12, 2016 -> 11:53 AM) I have no respect for a coach who rails the umps for freaking kid games. None. The umps are typically volunteering their time (yes some get paid) but growing up in our league an off-duty cop was our ump and he'd ump practically every game in our league except for when his son's team played (made me think of it cause I bumped into him today when dropping my daughter off at preschool). The message being sent to kids at that point is wrong, imo. That all rolls up into the "respect for authority" thing kids should be learning at a lower level. Berating an umpire in during a little league game just shows kids that is OK to be publicly disrespectful to authority figures.

2015-2016 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 12, 2016 -> 11:46 AM) You act like it was glossed over. There was plenty of media coverage into his gambling, even a book. We all know his father was murdered. We all know he punched Steve Kerr at practice. This social media of today stuff that would have eaten him up is BS. He's still around with today's social media making more money on shoes in a year than he did his entire career playing basketball. Yet where are all the scandalous stories that would destroy him? Players are still cheating on their wives, they are still doing things they shouldn't probably be doing, and aren't getting killed on social media. The fact is, especially with Jordan, he wasn't out in public enough for anything really to get him on twitter or instagram or facebook. All you have to do is look at Tiger Woods to know how much the media loves to eat one of these guys for lunch.

White Sox Tv ratings up 63% YoY
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ May 12, 2016 -> 11:10 AM) First off, what do you mean "if" the winning keeps up! Ye of little faith! Surely you meant "as" the winning keeps up. There! No charge for that subtle yet significant edit. Meanwhile, as it relates to the "bandwagon" that you keep mentioning, BRING-IT-ON! There's not a winning team in the world that doesn't have a bandwagon portion of it's fan base. I have zero problem with 40,000+ people, of which 20,000 are so-called bandwagon, filling up the Cell and cheering on our Sox. No problem whatsoever. And remember, those paying customers will go a long way's towards assuaging your constant concerns about perceived revenue constraints for the organization. Bandwagon good!! This is the least surprising post ever.

White Sox Tv ratings up 63% YoY
QUOTE (Dunt @ May 12, 2016 -> 10:02 AM) 100K tickets were just purchased a week or two ago. Winning heals all wounds. The Sox should make a habit of it, they'd probably start drawing really well. Attendance is up 613 per game so far, which means almost all of those tickets were purchased for future dates. And yes, if the winning keeps up, the bandwagon will continue to refill.

White Sox Tv ratings up 63% YoY
QUOTE (ChrisLikesBaseball @ May 12, 2016 -> 09:36 AM) TV ratings come first, then ticket purchases later in the season if they stay competitive. Attendance is definitely a trailing metric for the White Sox.

2016 MLB Draft
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ May 12, 2016 -> 02:42 AM) Which brings me to this question.... At pick #10....would you guys rather have a top 1 or 2 talent whose stock is falling right now and slides to #10, or would you rather have a guy who was a late 1st RD pick whose stock has exploded late and all the sudden becomes a top 10 pick by draft day. Which would you rather the Sox select at #10? A lot of that has to do with how it plays into pool money, and what the Sox think of specific players, especially in the case of starting pitching.

2016 Cubs catch-all thread
QUOTE (whitesoxjr27 @ May 12, 2016 -> 08:57 AM) Cubs' biggest deal could be Jake Arrieta contract … but it won't be easy http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/colum...511-column.html I will say it now. For that price, (7 years, maybe more, and $200+ million) the Cubs are really smart to let him walk away. This is the part of the Red Sox rebuild that Theo really screwed the pooch on, and that is really bad free agent contracts.

White Sox Tv ratings up 63% YoY
QUOTE (Tex @ May 12, 2016 -> 07:41 AM) Interesting. That seems like a huge jump. Numerically, it is still a crappy number, but it is a big jump over worst in all of baseball.

White Privilege?
QUOTE (lostfan @ May 11, 2016 -> 06:31 PM) Oh man, don't ever put Carlin and Maher in the same category again, that's just insulting to Carlin in so many ways. Carlin was definitely not an apologist for any form of oppression, though. If that's what you got from him then he went over your head. His thing was standing up to it and giving it the finger, not dismissing people or denying it was a thing. Fer realz. George Carlin really was an island in a sea of non-intelligent humor in his day.

The Bench
None of the candidates for the bench are very good. If they were good, they wouldn't be bench players.

Ventura will earn his extension the next 43 games
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 11, 2016 -> 04:28 PM) Against the Rangers, 5 doesn't feel out of the game to me. I bet any White Sox fan who has followed them or Harrelson for the past 30 years when they've been playing in Arlington would say the exact same thing and felt uncomfortable right away when Carroll allowed the first two runners to reach base. As I said, at Texas or Wrigley with the wind blowing out during the summer are two of the places I would make that same statement. So not arbitrary at all. And you have to look at the context, he was going right into the heart of the Rangers' line-up and their hottest hitters in Odor, Mazara and Beltre, compared to the bottom 3. The distinction you are trying to draw between 5 and 6 is completely arbitrary, as is all of the rest of the post.

5/11 - White Sox @ Rangers
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ May 11, 2016 -> 06:14 PM) Someone is going to have to explain this to me. Why would Ventura try a hit and run with Sanchez (who hardly plays) AND a slow / average runner at first base? He screws up the bullpen in a winnable game last night and he makes this strange decision this afternoon. Guess he's back to his normal self now. At least they didn't get swept but these last two games...all you can do is shake your head. Since the Baltimore series the Sox aren't playing that well just 7-6. Robin also said the pen was limited today but that doesn't make a lot of sense either since they have two off days in the next five. On to New York and hopefully better things. And I agree suddenly the starting rotation doesn't look so hot...Latos is now back on Earth, Rodon is struggling and the 5th starter, well if I've figured this right the Sox are 0-5-2 (no decisions) in those games that they have started. Doesn't mean the Sox haven't won any of those games just that the 5th starter did not get the decision. Mark In the post game he specifically said they were trying to stay out of the double play, and going for the big inning.

5/11 - White Sox @ Rangers
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 11, 2016 -> 05:07 PM) How does that make sense when we have 2 scheduled off-days in the next 5 days and are likely to lose at least one game out of three in NYC due to the weather forecast? I guess we're playing for August/September...as Ventura learned in 2012 when that team completely wore down during the stretch run. If a guy is sore today, a day off tomorrow doesn't help. That makes perfect sense to me.

5/11 - White Sox @ Rangers
Worth noting is that Ventura did say specifically that the pen was limited today. He didn't want to go to certain guys.

The Bathroom Dilemma
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 11, 2016 -> 03:45 PM) Well, in this situation at least there is a scenario in which there could be inappropriate behavior (little girl could see a male body part in the women's room; kind of scary for the little kid). Most of the protection of little Johnny and Jane in society are situations in where there is no situation set up for inappropriate behavior, just the parents coddling their little preciouses. Why isn't the situation where a male could do something inappropriate to another male talked about? That is actually more likely to happen.
