  1. QUOTE (The Critic @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 08:28 AM) Those refs had a bad game, and they over-reacted to the Hawks' response to the physical (goonish) play of the Blues. Even in my crappy floor hockey league when I was young, I would see this. When the refs would be off their game and the play got chippy, they would make up for their poor officiating by trying to "take back control of the game". This meant issuing overly severe penalties like game misconducts and majors where a minor would have been appropriate. That's what the game last night reminded me of. That sounds about right. They didn't seem ready for St Louis's style at all. They spent all night getting the response instead of the cause.
  2. QUOTE (pktmotion @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 01:25 AM) Gavin was almost traded to the Orioles for Brian Roberts, before the O's signed him to that ridiculous deal. So I wouldn't say he isn't likely to get traded. Gavin's a good pitcher, and one of my favorite players, but I think the organization knows he's not much more than a back of the rotation guy and he has tremendous value to a team looking for SP, as I mentioned the Nationals. I think the White Sox have more faith and promise with Danks and Hudson. Now Hudson still too young to project entirely, but from the small sample we got to see against ML hitting; he was dominant borderline unhittable. It'll be interesting to see how he progresses. With Danks(and his brother) dropping Boras, I think there's enough goodwill to sign him to an extension. Whether it happens this year or next is still up in the air, but ultimately I think it happens. I think he'll get close to the Lester-deal, probably same years less money With his set contract giving the white sox cheap cost certianty, and his improving peripherals, not to mention the IP, he isn't going anywhere.
  3. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 05:58 AM) Juan Pierre got a 5/$45 mill contract due to a .292/.330/.388/.717 season with the Cubs. Given, it was a different market and was a horrendous decision at the time, but Pods' agent would get fired if he settled for a contract this early in the offseason. It makes perfect sense to try and get what he can for Podsednik, but he will have to settle for a contract within the next month or so. If last years market taught anything, it is that waiting isn't going to help. Once teams are done spending, they are done, and the prices drop quickly.
  4. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 09:24 AM) Perhaps he invited Cowley? Someone has to park cars...
  5. QUOTE (SockMe @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 10:27 PM) imagine a wedding with Ozzie I just hope he gave the toast...
  6. QUOTE (SockMe @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 10:26 PM) match penalty? http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/blackhawks...an-get-physical
  7. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 10:15 PM) Got called for a fighting instigator penalty with like 3 minutes left which is an automatic 1 game suspension. They said it was actually a match penalty which is past a instigator. He is actually suspended indefinitely, pending his hearing with the league office.
  8. How the hell did the Bulls win? I didn't watch anything because the Hawks were on.
  9. best of luck to yeah Gavin and _______.
  10. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 08:40 PM) Sharp gotten taken out, Barker tried to defend him and got 5 minute fighting and a 2 minute instigator penalties on top of a 10 minute misconduct and a 10 minute game misconduct. And the guy who started it all with a charge didn't have anything called against him.
  11. I was glad to see JT stand up for himself and not back down.
  12. QUOTE (The Critic @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 07:42 PM) I bet the Blues didn't get that kind of home-cooking during the holidays. STUPID penalty by Brouwer to give the Blues a full 2:00 two-man advantage. And they killed the whole damned thing. Now we need to come out flying in the second and blow this open.
  13. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 07:31 PM) Could the Blues play any dirtier? An elbow to Kane's chin and Sharp gets taken out hard by Weaver. And now a 7 minute power play for STL, nice. That was god-awful officiating.
  14. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 07:05 PM) Again, the size of the operations, the amount of information available (how much intelligence could possibly be gathered) and the amount of information known (how much intelligence was gathered) are not remotely comparable. In hindsight it is really to say that. Keep in mind this was a totally unique idea that had never been done before. Even though people said it was "possible", everything we knew about hi-jacking to that point was that the most valuable thing was the alive passengers as a bargaining chip. No one had ever used a plane as a weapon before in a terrorist act. Honestly the American people would have gone ballistic if the federal government had placed all of the rules that are now taken for granted on airline passengers, with nothing ever actually haven happened. There was no way short of one of the high-jackers walking into the FBI office and telling them that they were going to pull this off, that the necessary steps were going to be taken to prevent it. It was so unique both in its newness, and in its scope, that there was a near zero chance of it being stopped. People keep arguing that the scale is what should have made it easy to stop, but it was actually the scale that made it impossible to stop.
  15. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 06:15 PM) I think I know what you're getting at here although I can't really put it into words. The question is something like "is it possible to have flawless, 100% security" and the answer is no, you can spend an insane number of resources far past the point of diminishing returns, and that'll just mean the bad guys will eventually think of something you haven't thought of yet. For example... 9/11.
  16. QUOTE (The Critic @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 03:02 PM) That's true. I hate the trap, it sucks all the great elements out of the game. I LOVE the olympics just for watching the pure skill on exhibition.
  17. Its not often you see a Petino team get out worked, but that is exactly what has happened at the start of this one.
  18. What a start to the UK LU game. Cousins should have been sent packing.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 02:23 PM) Crazy, I honestly had never heard that and I've lived here for 29 years. It has really come back into vogue the last couple of years with the Hawks.
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 02:03 PM) The foul was on the rebound attempt on a different Illini player. Even the announcers were saying it shouldn't count, but it seems they did count it. If the ball was off of the shooters fingertips, it should count. As a matter of a fact we had that exact situation happen in a game I was calling last night. They counted the three and walked down to the other side of the floor to shoot the bonus.
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 01:36 PM) Can someone explain to me how Brandon Paul's follow dunk counted, even though there was a loose ball foul on the rebound? These refs have made some horrible calls today. I didn't see it, but if the foul was committed on the rebound attempt, it should count. Unless you mean the guy committed a foul on a put-back dunk, then they screwed up.
  22. QUOTE (chisoxt @ Jan 1, 2010 -> 10:21 AM) I would be shocked and amazed if anything more than a buildout of the empty ground floor space in the new north end stair tower gets done in the next two years. Whatever commercial development gets buit at that location has to survive on its own and cannot rely on the critical mass provided by only 81 home dates. With the economy in the tank and banks unwilling to lend, trust me, the extensive development described in the article will not happen. Is this development private or coming out of the Park Authority money?
  23. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 01:17 PM) And Plan C is rotating DH? I think the secondary plan is to look and see who falls through the cracks as we get close to spring training and to try to sign them as cheaply as possible. It could very well be Jim Thome, but there are lots of other names out there still.
  24. QUOTE (The Critic @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 12:12 PM) Blues fired Andy Murray. We'll see if they get the "new coach boost" when they host the Hawks tonight. I doubt it. This does have the makings of being a trap game...
  25. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 01:10 PM) I don't think 99% of it happens in games. What big injuries have happened this year in practices?
