QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 01:07 PM) He wouldn't get hurt in practice? I think when you play things too cautiously is when you start hurting yourself. Because its not like 99% of serious injuries happen in a game or something...

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 12:20 PM) How well does resting everyone for weeks usually work out, anyway? Don't the record books show its better to keep playing at a high level? I think the big thing isn't resting per se, but not getting hurt.

Who are you pulling for as the DH?
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 12:19 PM) http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/artic...sp&c_id=cws Merkin tries to drop a hint, at Gonzalez or Fielder, but I'll pass it off as wishful thinking. He also hints at a Thome return, so we'll see. That would be Plan A, and then plan B.

Torres and Hudson win MiLBYs
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 12:27 PM) I'm really hoping Danks signs an extension this offseason, same with Quentin. If not, I might consider shopping them after the season... I am sure Kenny goes back to Danks and tries again. If the rumor about Q being offered in a trade proposal was actually true, I am guessing the only way they extend him is cheap. They may well be worried about his injury problems.

Official 2009-2010 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 12:23 PM) Last night, the Lakers/Kings game wasn't blacked out on UVerse for whatever reason so watched the last quarter. If there was EVER and NBA game this season to look at and say, "Yeah, the refs are rigging games.", That would of been it. Even Shannon Brown was getting calls that weren't there. And you had to love Kobe's major push off to get open and hit the buzzer beater. Not to mention his catch, hop, and shoot...

Torres and Hudson win MiLBYs
QUOTE (pktmotion @ Jan 1, 2010 -> 11:53 PM) If Hudson continues to progress at the alarming rate he did last year, it would definitely mean the end of Gavin's stay in Chicago. Floyd's been a great pitcher for us, but Hudson's ceiling is higher than his. The Detroit game should've proved that. And IMO Gavin's probably already peaked. I don't think alone he could net us a big bat (i.e. Gonzo or Fielder) but he could haul in a bounty of good prospects. And if the Sox were confident enough in the offense and Daniel Hudson taking over the 3rd/4th spot, reinforcing the farm system would be a sound baseball move. The Nationals could be a possible partner if the Sox wanted to trade Floyd. - Nats are looking for SP - Gavin's from Maryland - The Nats have quite a bit of intriguing prospects (Derek Norris, Chris Marrero) With Norris being blocked by Jesus Flores and the 2010 projected No. 1 overall pick being Bryce Harper C. Norris could be part of a deal along with a few other pieces. Maybe Gavin Floyd for Derek Norris, Sean Burnett, and couple hi-A pitchers isn't out of the question. That way Norris is your future catcher and Flowers can slide to 1B/DH and concentrate his efforts on power. Burnett could also fair well as the LOOGY. This is all predicated on Hudson's progress and the signability of John Danks (he's the future Mark Buehrle, so sorry he's not getting traded). But if things fall to place Gavin could be a valuable trade chip. As crazy as it sound, right now Gavin Floyd might be the least likely pitcher to get traded on the Sox team. Out of the starters, Danks would be the most likely, as he has refused to sign an extension to this point.

Celebrity Crush
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 06:55 AM) I tend not to crush on celebrities or people on TV/big screen, because I usually prefer women that aren't skin and bones. I'm definitely a fan of the hourglass. Women need curves. I also think most women look better with little or no makeup. So I am a lot more likely to crush on some girl I see on the train, or walking around the city, than an actress or model. There are a few women in Hollywood with a little more on them, that I like - Beyonce (though she seems to fluctuate), Kate Winslet, Scarlett Johannsen as examples. But oddball crushes? OK - Julie Warner.

4 or 5 star Prospect ratings
QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jan 1, 2010 -> 05:04 PM) Here are some numbers: Victor Wang has done some tremendous research about prospects and their value. In determining their value he had to find the rate of which players bust in each category he divided them into. This is a healthy dose of realism to keep in mind when we’re looking at the any one club’s farm system. * 10% of top 10 hitting prospects bust. * 31% of top 10 pitching prospects bust. * 21% of top 11-25 hitting prospects bust. * 32% of top 11-25 pitching prospects bust. * 35% of top 26-50 hitting prospects bust. * 33% of top 26-50 pitching prospects bust. * 45% of top 51-75 hitting prospects bust. * 39% of top 51-75 pitching prospects bust. * 43% of top 76-100 hitting prospects bust. * 43% of top 76-100 pitching prospects bust. * 59% of ‘B grade’ hitting prospects bust. * 52% of ‘B grade’ pitching prospects bust. * 83% of ‘C grade’ hitting prospects bust. * Around 75% of all ‘C grade’ pitching prospects bust. Top 100 prospects are Baseball America’s. B and C grades are as ranked by prospect wonk John Sickels. So essentially one in three top 10 pitching prospects busts. Wow. Maybe Kenny Williams isn't so dumb to be dumping these guys off afterall. The interesting part of that is how small the drop off is in pitching from the top 10 to the B grade. It only goes from 31 to 52%, while hitting goes from 10% to 59%

Failed terrorist attack in Detroit
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 1, 2010 -> 09:29 AM) Interestingly, I wasn't even thinking this when I posted that article...I was genuinely expressing doubt that it would be possible to stop this type of attack at all while still maintaining any semblance of an open society. The 9/11 attack was hugely detailed, involved years of planning, gave tons of hints to law enforcement and intelligence agencies over the course of years, involved millions of dollars, etc. This case involved a very low level warning of the type that they've probably received about you a couple times, security screening not done by the U.S., only a couple thousand dollars, no training, and less than a month between the first hints of a warning and the actual attempt. I've long thought that if AQ ever got their act together, they could do the most damage by pulling off a series of the latter type of attacks, because they aren't the type on which you can gather intelligence effectively; you just give a guy a bomb or send him to a gun show & voila, 20 dead Americans a couple days later. You could shut down malls by hitting a couple of them, shut down commerce by hitting a couple banks, whatever. The 9/11 scale of attack ought to be preventable because it was so big. This is the level of attack I wonder if you can prevent if you let people out of their doors. Post investigation, it might turn out that there was some easily overlooked thing, but I doubt it. Of course, that's immediately viewed as defending Obama for some reason. I'm sure it's naturally me who's doing that somehow subconsciously, and not you guys trying to take every discussion out there and immediately use it as a way to say "See, Obama's as bad as Bush!" As opposed to every conversation turning into "Look at Obama doing every thing perfectly! He is the ultimate dove, but he is a kick ass hawk too!"? It just happens to be coincidental that as soon as blame starts going up the ladder, articles start getting posted saying that none of it is Obama's fault. I could see how you would take that as trying to defend Bush in conversations. Please. It is easy to sit back in retrospect and say it should have been easy to catch the 9-11 attacks, just as it is easy to sit back after the fact and say it should have been easy to do anything. They didn't have enough specific intelligence to prevent it at the end of the day. And just like the point you keep trying to make for this, the intelligence agency's see these kind of reports all of the time, many on a scale bigger than 9/11 I am sure. They can't be all things, to all people, all of the time. There is no doubt in my mind that there will be another massive attack again, and all of the same people will be defending/opposing the usual sides instead of actually appreciating that complexities don't necessarily conform to economies of scale when it comes to how many people die in an attack.

Official 2009-2010 NFL Thread
I know it is the easy thing to say about the Colts, but the other side of the story is if Peyton Manning blows out his knee in a meaningless game, the coach would be strung up. I know the odds are slim of that happening, but what were the odds of Brian Urlacher sustaining a season ending injury in the first half of the first game of this year? Stuff happens. Football is a violent game full of contact and injuries.

Torres and Hudson win MiLBYs
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 31, 2009 -> 03:53 PM) But how are we ever gonna get to that point if we keep trading them the minute their value peaks? I see what you're saying. Guys like Joe Borchard, Brian Anderson and Josh Fields have scarred some for life. But there's going to come a time in which we're going to have to actually draft AND develop from within. If we could spend like some of the other big market teams, this wouldn't be a real issue. As I've said many times, props to KW for being able to consistently get rid of crap before anybody realizes they're crap. But I'm getting sick of multiple reclamation projects every year. I'm getting sick of 'change of scenery' guys every year. I'm disgusted that we've got Juan Pierre manning LF for the next two years. If we could develop our own talent, we wouldn't have to rely so heavily on this method that we've adopted over the last decade. Which obviously has proven that it's no recipe for year-in and year-out success. Fortunately, we're not in the AL east. Or we'd really be in trouble. How would the organization look if we kept holding on to all of these failures instead?

Failed terrorist attack in Detroit
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 31, 2009 -> 03:48 PM) As I said, I've certainly gotten the impression that there was a unique period of threats before 9/11. The "Summer of threat" in the words of the CIA director. With his "Hair on Fire". That doesn't sound like this at all. so there was a bunch of threats, and we were supposed pick out exactly when, where, and how... Got it.

Failed terrorist attack in Detroit
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 31, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) They had one of them in custody didn't they? They had reports of guys in pilot schools, they had things that just weren't decoded in time, IIRC there were quite a few other things that they could have reacted to. Anyway, the question is, how do you react to this level of intel? If we get 1000 reports of the level that we received about this guy per day, and one of them turns into a legit plot, how do you react to that? Just like 9-11.
