  1. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 07:48 PM) I'm just kind of making this comment as an aside, but before 2008, the tigers made a bunch of crazy deals and were assured to win the central. And yeah. BUT, the cardinals seem to annually OVERachieve. Yes, they have the greatest player in baseball, but man, every year since 2004 I've pretty much looked at their roster and been like, meh. And they just compete like hell. Yeah, it put them in a position to compete with us...

QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 07:25 PM) LOL at how short this thread is. BTW, Super Freakonomics is fantastic so far. I couldn't find the long thread in a quick google search (couldn't remember what it was called) so I used the first one I found.
  3. Quite a big problem in the last page of getting this alphabet game moving in the right direction...
  4. QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 11:52 PM) Weird. He doesn't believe in the possibility of Iranian revolution, but fully believes in the reality of pro wrestling. QOTY
  5. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 02:16 AM) Looks like Weis might take the Chiefs OC job. That makes sense to me.
  6. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 11:25 PM) Hawks win 4-1 against MIN...yawn. I missed it. I had a basketball game to call.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 05:33 PM) If this commitment of money means they can't afford to extend Albert at roughly ARod rates, then it's an absolutely foolish contract. I'm guessing this means they know they won't be able to, and are trying to "replace" him.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 05:37 PM) If that was a swerve, I would have trouble buying it because it seems Jack has a pretty good memory of past patients. Or even better, how about Christian screwing it up because he was drunk?

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 04:11 PM) You can't hardly find a good cherry soda anymore. It makes me miss Mr Daves of all places.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 04:44 PM) From a recent interview with Cuse. I always wanted to have a scene where Jack finds out that Locke was paralyzed before the crash. We better get it!!! Or that Jack failed in operating on Locke after his fall???
  11. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 04:35 PM) I think Daley finally started getting to people and he's actually going to struggle to get re-elected this time. Not.a.chance. He'll kill whoever he runs against, unless he is indicted in the meantime... Even then, he will most likely still win.
  12. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 03:59 PM) Rahm Emanuel Reportedly Considering Run For Chicago Mayor Is Rich Daley dead or in jail?
  13. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 03:12 PM) That's odd because according to Baseball Reference Swish played 27 of the last 31 game of the season from September to October. In fact, he missed one game during the last two weeks of the season. That was a game on the 23rd of September against the Angels if you're curious. He was pretty dodgy in the playoffs, but that’s an issue of sample size. Would you care to back up your statement? Google it.
  14. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 03:14 PM) There are way too many people that think the s*** on 24 is real. Its not? :
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 02:45 PM) But now you're arguing for rationing, and as long as we're pretending that we're not rationing right now, that's evil! (The big flaw in your argument is of course that we're already paying for a system that would cover everything all the time, we're just the only developed nation not getting it). And you are arguing for rationing people's lives in the form of security. Guess what, now you are evil.
  16. QUOTE (JuiceCruz16 @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 02:13 PM) I stand corrected on his nice start, I seem to recall a quick first month of the season sticking out in my mind. Yes, his stats fell back to Oakland form ( the wind tunnel in new Yankee Stadium was helpful), where he did not impress me either! You can keep that crap. He was a butcher in the outfield for the Yanks, as a fill in guy he is ok, but he seemed to think he is more then that with the Sox, so once again gladly the Yanks can have him. And he was so impressive down the stretch he got benched, for the second year in a row.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 12:32 PM) So, your argument is that providing even basic health care for the lowest wage earners in society is too expensive, and furthermore is somehow more expensive than providing health care for others, such that expanding the health care system to include them somehow falls into the diminshing marginal returns category? Except that we are now forcing EVERYONE to have health care and cover EVERYTHING, all of the time. Which is exactly the argument against security you keep making. You can't cover everything, as it would be too expensive and impractical is the mantra I have seen here.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 12:11 PM) So, you bring the health care debate into this, then argue for spending money on prevention because of the benefits it provides? (walks away slowly) I never said preventative medicine was bad, just that the diminishing marginal returns argument you were using was the exact opposite of what you were just saying else where.
  19. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 12:04 PM) Isn't spending money on something that is going to happen smarter than spending money on something that may never happen again? The one way to make sure it happens again is to not spend money to prevent it.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 11:32 AM) Not sure i get the comparison. For that to be hitting health care reform, the extra tens of billions of dollars a year would have to go to prevention of a very uncommon occurrence. People going without health care because of costs is a very, very, very common occurrence. And then we get into all the other discussions of how this actually helps prevent cost growth by allowing better preventative care and so forth. Trillions of dollars going to something that is always going to happen (sick and dying people) with a very large diminishing marginal return? That is exactly why you have been arguing that extra security precautions are worthless.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 11:32 AM) So, your argument is that Conservatives should get to decide which groups have rights and Liberals shoudn't. That would make your argument that liberals get to decide and conservatives don't. I would argue that your definition of rights is very different than mine. You seem to believe that people have the right to take things that people have from other people as often as possible. I feel is should be done as little as possible.
  22. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 11:07 AM) 300 level tickets going for $100+ now. Yeah, I have been trying to take my four year old to a game, but I am not spending $50 to stand with her.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 09:26 AM) Here's an argument by a Swedish professor that I find intriguing. The funny part, besides it being Al-Jazeera, is that the argument would be pretty vilified if health care were substituted for security in that article.
  24. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 10:41 AM) Bears fire offensive coordinator Ron Turner, promote Rod Marinelli to defensive coordinator. Press conference this afternoon. And Lovie Smith is officially put on notice for his job.
