  1. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Jul 29, 2017 -> 04:14 PM) Yes if they do literally nothing to improve this team in the off-season they will be bad again. But do you know Rick Hahn to do nothing in the off-season? Do you really think the Sox will just sit on the sidelines? I don't know, and neither do you. When you look at whether they should choose to at least put an MLB quality team on the field the answer to me is clear. They can make this team decent without spending $200m on free agents or trading any of their prospects. It really wouldn't be too difficult. They built a pretty good pen out of a pair of cheap trades and some minor league free agents, why can't they do that again? Don't tell that they won't be any good, tell me why they shouldn't. How does it hurt to win a few games in 2018? Hahn isn't going to spend much of anything on even tier 3 FAs. They will be looking at the Hector Santiago's & Chris Tillman's of the world as well as more scrap heap bullpen pieces. They're not going to waste $ on replacement level players when there will be other players with higher potential upside for less cost in the rule V and they're going to need to free up 40 man spots in order to protect some of their depth in the minors. Just accept that they're going to suck next year or don't and come back during the winter meetings in '18 when the Sox will be buyers.
  2. Even in the best case scenario where the '18 white sox pull off a '06 marlins I don't see us breaking .500; the marlins finished 78-84 with a pythag of 80-82 and a negative run differential of 14.
  3. I think both Yolmer & Avisail are gone before the start of the season. DH - Abreu C - Narvaez* 1B - Gillaspie# 2B - Moncada# SS - Anderson 3B - Davidson LF - W. Garcia CF - Engel RF - Garcia# SP - Rodon* SP - Shields SP - Santiago* - FA SP - Lopez SP - Giolito CL - Jones SU - Petricka SU - Goldberg MR - Rule V MR - FA LO - Bummer* LR - Danish C - Smith UT - Hanson# UT - Delmonico* OF - Tilson* if healthy if not Cordell
  4. QUOTE (Quin @ Jul 29, 2017 -> 09:35 AM) Combined with the new international spending penalties, this is a good thing. They just need to change how the competitive balance picks work. agreed, comp picks should be dolled out by record and if you hit a median salary floor.
  5. Maybe they're viewing him as a LOOGY similar to how Liriano was getting interest and consideration so far.
  6. QUOTE (iWin4Ron @ Jul 28, 2017 -> 08:42 AM) Caulfield isn't really doing anything wrong/negative. He posted a fangraph article that demonstrated the riskiness of the White Sox Farm system brilliantly. I suggest reading it before you guys gang up on his devils advocate opinion. With that being said, the defence against the argument might be "all prospects are risky," and so, while the White Sox prospects are certainly risky, so are everybody elses. Therefore, the negative tendency is likely best put to rest, otherwise we will eat our eyes out over the next two years with this. Better to be optimistic about the future. My problem with Dave Cameron's article is that; what were the safe alternatives that were available? and further more how have those "safe" players performed? Benintendi is on pace for a 2WAR season and his defense is uninspiring and shows the bias that a lot of big clubs prospects get, he doesn't have a "cannon arm" and if he was in a lot of systems would likely get hit with the "tweener" label, wrongfully I might add but still. Meadows hasn't shown he can stay healthy yet or that he can master AAA in his second go around, Swanson just got sent down & Bregman is having a solid year. Benintendi & Bregman weren't available so again whats the take away? I think Hahn and Hostetler have done a very good job blending high ceiling and moderate floor when it comes to both hitters & pitching (Moncada/Jimenez/Robert vs. Burger/Collins/Sheets) & (Kopech/Giolito/Lopez vs. Guerrero/Adams/Dunning). To take back the division the Sox are going to need a couple of the high ceiling prospects to hit and a few of the moderate floors to deliver as well. Between now and '20 the sox are going to have the ability to throw a lot of 40 & 45FV prospects against the wall and see what sticks and I have a creeping suspicion they will find a couple of serviceable big leaguers out of the mix and just like the cubs with Contreras the sox are going to likely need some rando come out of nowhere (Mendick, Zavala, etc) and what ever can't be converted from the farm can be bought in free agency or additional depth can be moved for what they need.
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 28, 2017 -> 08:28 AM) Supposedly he is a plus defender. Not that this is gospel but he is very good per Clay Davenport also like the DeRosa '98 as a top comp
  8. Great night for Mendick & Burger Jordan Guerrero 5.1 6H 2BB 5SO 1HR 3ER, a mixed bag of a start
  9. QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 02:15 PM) Anderson hitting leadoff tonight. That's something I've never understood. Get him as many PA as possible and try to salvage something from this lost year.
  10. Melky + MiGo + $ to the royals for some combination of LHP Foster Griffin, SS Nicky Lopez, 1B Samir Duenez & C Nick Dini Yolmer Sanchez to the rays for SS Lucius Fox & LHP Resly Linares
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 02:28 PM) So back problems, TJS and now this...I just don't see how realistically that contract ends up working out for the Sox. In hindsight, we should have traded him when he was actually healthy, but that ship has sailed long ago, just as it did on Crede/Jenks/Floyd/Crain. Holland, in all likelihood, as well. 2018: $4M 2019 Team Option: $4.6M ($1.2M buyout) 2020 Team Option: $5.2M ($1.2M buyout) 2021 Mutual Option: $6M there are worse ways to spend 5.2M if they choose to buyout in '19
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 02:24 PM) Btw, what is the current health status of Nate Jones? He's actually going to be ready by the beginning of the 2018 season to be the closer, after all of his health problems? maybe spring training
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 02:15 PM) This is a 65 win team at best in 2018 if there isn't a lot of bad luck. Yes, even if Rodon, Giolito & Lopez come out the gates hot, that bullpen is more than likely going to be soul crushing and leave us begging for the '14 pen... and that still doesn't take into account that Shields and Random FA 5th starter are likely going to blow holes in any meaningful winning streak.
  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 02:03 PM) Can Davidson and Moncada not strike out 30-40% of the time? By fwar, Davidson basically is replacement level value due to his strikeouts, lack of OBP and defensive shortcomings. How much "better" can he realistically be in the future? (According to Hawk, he has Schwarber upside, whatever that means exactly.) that "hawk" for platoon bat
  15. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 10:55 AM) Sox could easily be a .500 team in 2018. I also don't see the point in wasting Moncada, Lopez, and Giolito's service time just so they can save Jimenez's. strangers things have happened, but i put the odds of that happening at less than 5%. Here is what we're likely looking at for the opening day 25 man roster. DH -Abreu C - Narvaez* 1B - Gillespie# 2B - Moncada# SS - Anderson 3B - Davidson LF - Cordell CF - Leury# RF - Engel SP - Shields SP - Rodon* SP - Giolito SP - Santiago* / Tillman - FA SP - Lopez CL - Petricka SU - FA / Rule V SU - FA MR - Goldberg MR - Danish LO - Bummer* LR - Holmberg* or Rule V C - Smith UT - Hanson# CI - Delmonico* OF - Tilson* no amount of squinting gets you close to .500 for the year. Maybe post deadline they play around .500 with other promotions and give the appearance of being a dark horse for '19 but thats how I'm seeing them. The bullpen provided they can stay healthy should be better than what we're going to run with after the deadline in Petricka, Putnam and Jones. But Giolito, Lopez and Rodon are going to go through growing pains, and hopefully whomever they sign to bridge to the next wave of starters can be moved for something and shields can ride off in the sunset after '18.
  16. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 05:53 AM) Tito Polo in the same tier as Basabe & Adolfo? He's got nowhere near the same upside and is a lessser prospect than Cordell, who you put in tier 0. Tito Polo is 22 and performing well at AA age appropriate, Cordell is 25 both are likely 4th outfielders but Polo has age on his side.
  17. I still think he winds up with the royals, familiarity, cost ability to play LF and DH and the fact the sox will eat all of remaining salary. I wouldn't surprise me to see him bundled with MiGo, opening spots for Delmonico and Lopez.
  18. QUOTE (mac9001 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 10:25 AM) It's strange seeing people excited over this kid and so down on Cordell. I personally view Cordell more favorably, but I wonder if people would have felt this kid was an appropriate return for Swarzak? I view them both as prospects that have pulses and will be with the major league team in the short term and hopefully a couple of them can become regulars that will provide depth and reinforce the prospects with higher pedigrees. Not everyone is going to work out but if a couple of the Leury/Engel/Willy/Cordell/Yolmer/Hansen/Davidson/Delmonico/Liriano/Polo/Gillaspies' of the world can become De Aza level players we will be heading in the right direction.
  19. thanks you Andre Rienzo! great get by Hahn, blocked by Bauers and they've signed McKay. Could also make a long term commitment to LoMo in the off season. Great trade by Hahn. link Mahalanobis Comp: Gaby Sanchez previously showed up on KATOH+ & stats only 2017 top 100 at 51 link Having a down year but a solid get for Jennings.
  20. this is how I view the future outfield shaping up Tier 0 Throw them against the wall Cordell/Engel/L. Garcia# | Tilson, Liriano & W. Garcia fall into this bucket as well Tier 1 Top 100 Jimenez/Robert/Rutherford* Tier 2 Upside Polo/Basabe#/Adolfo Tier 3 Moderate floor Fisher*/Gonzalez/Call Hopefully Avisail can continue his best Jose Guillen impersonation and get moved in the next 12 months.
  21. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 10:35 PM) Ugh Anderson. 6 pitches none in the zone on 3-2 outa the zone he swings
  22. Goldberg has got some over powering stuff; I hope he'll be able to harness it at this level. the movement on his fastball and his change are nasty.
  23. TA has till the end of '19 before the sox will feel the need to make a move, write this year off and try and rise above and over come.
