Ventura on his job status
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 06:03 PM) Do you think that this team is a team that is not talented enough to compete for the division this year? I think they can compete, but they do not and unless they make changes, will not, have a stellar defense.

Ventura on his job status
QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 05:11 PM) It's not even a lack of talent that is costing us defensively. This isn't a guy not getting to a ball he should have. These are fundamental mistakes that basically every professional ballplayer should be making, and if he isn't making, he can practice making them until he consistently does make them. However, for more than 2 full seasons, our players have not been making them. This extends to situational hitting and base running too. These are not talent issues; these are cultural issues. I think for the most part, the guys making the mistakes are the guys you would expect to make the mistakes. The one exception is Eaton. He has made a couple of blunders on the bases and in the field, but I wonder if any of it is him trying to justify his contract. I think once he gets going, assuming no major injuries, the offense takes off, which may take some pressure off the defense, and the routine plays become routine again. Gillaspie has been awful with the glove. The baserunning is well documented. They worked on that pretty hard. I think the decision making will improve, but I think people thought Vince Coleman making all the difference in the world was beyond wishful thinking. Eaton stole 15 last year. Vince has been with a few organizations as a baserunning instructor. I think if he routinely made 15 SB guys 40-50 SB guys, he would have been unavailable. It takes time to change.

Ventura on his job status
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 05:09 PM) You're right, both of Greg Walker's removals were resignations before he was going to be fired. No. Look up his White Sox resignation. And why did you delete your post?

Exactly.

John Danks
QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 02:55 PM) Danks 0 - 2, E.R.A., 6.10. He ran out of gas against KC, and didn't get much help today. He hasn't been very good, but better than the numbers indicate.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 05:00 PM) Sounds like an even better plan and I support it. I quess the truth is something you ignore when it makes you wrong.

Ventura on his job status
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 04:56 PM) I don't want you to leave either, but I'm sorry you're fired, you can't come back here either. I'm nice like that. You may want to look that one up. He left on his own.

4/15 - White Sox vs Indians
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 04:54 PM) If this season is about contending and Danks is going 5 innings/4 runs every time(with Noesi outperforming him), then I think he would go long man or have a magical ailment that put him on the DL. They can't burn up the bullpen every fifth day Noeisi hasn't shown he can save a bullpen yet. I know there is a lot of Danks hate, but if Noesi didn't have those shadows last Friday, he might not have lasted 2 innings.

Ventura on his job status
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 03:19 PM) A guy resigns so that he won't be fired, no one else will hire him, and you call that retired. Ok. He lives in Georgia, the Braves job was the only one he would take after he left the White Sox and the White Sox didn't want him to leave. It is easy to say no one would hire him, but when that was said before, one of the better organizations in baesball hired him, so that assumption was wrong, and you offer nothing to say it is now correct. So yeah, OK.

Ventura on his job status
QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 03:32 PM) So in other words, the Sox are short on talent and it was a waste of time trading for Samardzija, and signing Cabrera and Robertson. Great. The defense is not talented. That isn't because of Robin Ventura. Bad at 3B, shaky at 1B and 2B, shaky in LF, and not so good in RF, and that is not even mentioning the catcher. And when Beckham , ome of the better defenders on the team gets in the game, everyone gets pissed off. In 2013 and 2014, the White Sox lacked talent. You can win with bad defense. The 1977 Southside Hitmen won 90 games with perhaps one of the worst major league defenses ever assembled. But to be surprised, or say the sloppy defense is on Robin is not payimg attention. The defense was discussed a lot on the board this past winter.

Adam Eaton
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 03:50 PM) I did see him get picked off the other day. I saw him mis play a ball the other day.

Ventura on his job status
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 03:24 PM) Again to note...the bolded continues to be the short definition of the last 3 years of the Robin Ventura era. Lack of talent has also been a definition. As for the defense, we all knew this wasn't going to be a particularly good defensive team. I don't know why it's Robin's fault Micah is shaky at 2b, Gillaspie is bad at 3b, Abreu isn't a GGer, Avi still takes bad routes, and the catchers aren't stellar.

Ventura on his job status
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 03:16 PM) Well, you're probably right here. Guys who've been around awhile tend to have a lot of pals and get several chances in such an incestuous business. Deserved or otherwise. Maybe, or perhaps fans perception, especially White Sox fans who seem to store up frustration all winter to take out the first mistake of the season, is just wrong. I don't think Buddy Bell knows what he is doing myself, but I am damn sure if the White Sox sent him packing, he would find a job somewhere if he wanted. I don't know what everyone has against Brooks Boyer, but I go to the park as much as most, and I think it's a good time. And despite all the frothing at the mouth about Robin on here, I am pretty sure he is highly respected around baseball. To say Robin has cost this team wins this year is crazy.

Ventura on his job status
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 02:56 PM) It's a two edged sword to be sure. It helps keep guys you want to stay with the org, like Hahn, but keeps guys you wouldn't mind leaving behind in too important positions, and creates an atmosphere where necessary changes are made more difficult. If RV, Buddy Bell or Brooks Boyer were made available to the other 29 teams, would anyone hire them at their current levels? To say those guys wouldn't be hired is just saying it. Greg Walker got a job in about 5 minutes after resigning from the White Sox. He, according to this board would never get a job.

4/15 - White Sox vs Indians
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 03:03 PM) Yeah, I actually thought of that seconds after I posted. Good take. You might be right about the end of that baseball axiom. I'd like some proof, though, of how many managers are now playing to tie on the road. I wouldn't call it playing for a tie, but getting at least a tie.

4/15 - White Sox vs Indians
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 02:58 PM) I used to use the same argument when Oz called for the bunt and people fried him. I'd blame the player. But nobody is addressing what caufield said: Why was Robin playing for the tie on the road??? That's wild. I think Robin likes his bullpen. Playing for a tie on the road isn't necessarily wrong anymore.

4/15 - White Sox vs Indians
QUOTE (shysocks @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 02:49 PM) And the player is being rightly criticized as well. Not that much. He deserved the strikeout with that effort. But it is comforting to know he would have reached base if Robin didn't put the bunt on.

Ventura on his job status
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 02:45 PM) Can anyone at any time in history point out a manager who was hired with zero experience, who had a record as poor as Robin's over the first four years -- and THEN was extended? JR's loyalty is insane man. Joe Torre. He's now in the Hall of Fame.

4/15 - White Sox vs Indians
QUOTE (shysocks @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 02:44 PM) Dude, you don't have to support Robin at every opportunity. This was an indefensible decision and whether it "cost us the game" or not, it certainly, inarguably did not help. Eaton's AB did not help. As I stated, I don't agree with having him bunt with 2 strikes, but the fact is the player should be able to execute the bunt. And when I disagree with what a manager did, I don't always assume my way would have resulted in 10 runs. Melky was retired. Abreu struck out. Assuming that remains the same, a heck of a lot would have had to go right for the White Sox to win, even if Eaton is swinging away.

4/15 - White Sox vs Indians
QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 02:42 PM) The thing is, Ventura's approach to trying to get Abreu a chance to tie the game makes it more likely for the opposition to pitch around him if Cabrera doesn't deliver. And Abreu struck out.

4/15 - White Sox vs Indians
QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 02:42 PM) Chisenhall has done well vs Danks in his career, and you have a minor league catcher up next. 4 AB. As for Eaton, you can blame Robin all you want, but the fact remains, he should be able to get a bunt down.
-
4/15 - White Sox vs Indians
QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 15, 2015 -> 02:39 PM) Pitching to Chisenhall with open base, letting LaRoche bat in the 8th vs LHP and having Eaton bunt with 2 strikes are decisions that are pretty indefensible. This sucks You had the L/L match up with Chisenhall who has been pretty brutal vs LHP in his career. If that backfired, Robin would have been skewered.

4/15 - White Sox vs Indians
Clearly if Eaton didn't bunt, this was a victory.
