If the Sox spend all of their money available on player payroll aren't they technically all in every season?

QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 03:56 PM) Oh come on now...what was he supposed to do? Tell the fans and Kenny "I'm not playing him. His swing is f***ed." Bat him 7th or 8th.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 06:03 PM) add to this Hawk's contention that when they broke camp last year he told his wife "we've got problems" and it makes me wonder why i ever listen/believe these guys when they talk about the upcoming season. Of course you can't take them seriously. The only thing that puzzles me about Ozzie's quote and I'm going to believe him, is if they knew then, why did it take so long to move him down in the line up if Ozzie truly wasn't trying to show up KW and was trying to win?

QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 02:29 PM) Every professional job has a job description. If you're going to petty enough to say every single second of every single minute. Of course not, although my current job with the state makes me write down by 15 minute increments on my time sheet. Do you really know JR that well that you know what his decision's would be. At best it's a calcualted gamble. You really do hate KW enough to assume he's always lying and phony. The peopel I kow that know him think he is very straight forward with them. They say he is arrogant and can be difficult to deal with because he wants everything done his way but you at least you know where you stand with him. They also say he doesn't like the media and will puposely mislead them. Which is pretty obvious to everyone. Before you ask I do not have documented proof that my friends work well with him and respect him. I don't like KW but I don't hate him. Most contracts allow for titles and job descriptions to be amended occassionally, it may only require the employer, but often requires the employee as well. The only contract I ever signed allowed my employer to change my title, but required me to OK any compensation change. So, in essence, mine really didn't contain a title. If you know where you stand with KW, I would imagine most know where they stand with JR. I'm sure KW knew where he stood with JR since he's known him for almost 30 years and worked closely with him for 11, which is why his offer was nothing but hot air. He knew JR wouldn't just say "OK". Maybe he needed reassurance, maybe he needed his ego stroked, but he knew the answer before he asked the question.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 02:35 PM) As a 7th round pick, he was clearly one of, if not hte best possible players available at the time, who dropped because of signability concerns. So he's exactly what you're saying the Sox should do. He got 3rd round money. I'd rather have the Sox spend the 500k on a 2nd or 3rd round pick that should have gone in round 1, and spend the round 7 money on a round 7 pick. I'm really not for rebuilding through the draft BTW, its a long road and too many things can go wrong, but the Sox do have to select better. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 01:36 PM) Then you forfeit the right to ever complain about the Sox not spending in the draft. As I previously stated, the only time I have a problem with the Sox and draft spending is when they don't pick the obvious guys who drop because of signability and/or draft lesser players because of it. Take the best player available unless there are obvious injury or character concerns. I was never a fan of J Danks. He wasn't a huge overslot signing. He got $500k. -
QUOTE (YASNY @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 02:21 PM) When you offer your resignation, you have to be aware that there is a possibility that said resignation would be accepted. It's really that simple. He offered to become a scout. If JR said no to that perhaps KW takes his GM "resignation" off the table.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 02:05 PM) If you believe that Jerry is in the business of handing out contracts with no job descriptions, there isn't much point to this discussion. Have you ever signed an employment contract? Did it tell you exactly what you had to do everyday? Some do, some don't.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 01:57 PM) So you really believe Jerry would give out a contract without a job description and title in it? Yes. Ask yourself if KW offered to resign if the boss thought he was ineffective, wouldn't the boss have already replaced him if he thought he wasn't good as his job anymore? Jon Corzine offered to "resign" from MF Global if they wanted to go with the CRO's reccommodation that his trading postion be lessened. "Maybe I'm the wrong guy" is what he said, knowing he was the rockstar and would win. KW knew there was no chance JR would say goodbye, but he covered himself just in case.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 01:52 PM) Unless it is in his contract that he can do that, his contract would be invalid at the point he leaves the job as GM. Unless you can show me the ability to switch jobs is in his deal, which I really seriously doubt, it is Kenny offering to leave his contracted position. Unless you show me his contract specifically says he must be the GM to collect his paycheck, I disagree. I'm very confident it does not.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 01:35 PM) http://www.dailyherald.com/article/2011092...orts/709299659/ The big thing you are missing is if JR accepts Kenny's offer of resigning from his position, his contract is then invalid. Unless it expressly guarantees him a lesser position at the same price as an option, his contract is for his position as general manager. It doesn't matter if he offers to be a scout instead, unless it is expressly spelled out in the deal. At the point where Jerry said yes, it is a new deal and the old one invalid based on the agreement of both of the contracted parties. The rollover clause is irrelevant because overwhelming odds are it is for his job as GM. Not necessarily . He technically didn't offer to resign, and he knew the answer to the question: http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/...his-resignation He offered to switch jobs. If KW told JR he didn't want to be a GM anymore, he, after some questioning by JR, wouldn't be the GM. Its interesting he mentions Hendry. The only difference between KW and Hendry may be Bartman.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 12:40 PM) Jordan Danks is exactly what people have been clamoring for when it comes to draft spending. Draft and pay based on where they should have gone. The results of that in retrospect are hindsight. He was and is a waste of money. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 01:24 PM) I sure couldn't find it. Link? I don't have the link. I read it a year ago, it might have been on mlbtraderumors.com. Do you have a link to the offer of resignation? Here's a similar one, but it appears outdated: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/compensa...ots/?page_id=84

QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 01:18 PM) Kenny's salary probably wouldn't play a big role in determining whether he was the guy you wanted to keep his job or not. Apparently it probably isn't even enough to sign a Cuban to pitch for Kannapolis, but it would be significant I would think for KW, especially since he probably would have to accept a lesser role with another organization since GM jobs are really limited and he has made some questionable moves lately. KW knew as I know and you know and everyone else knows, if JR didn't want KW to be the GM, he wouldn't be the GM. So it was pretty obvious how he would respond to KW's offer.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 01:10 PM) When did you see Kenny Williams contract? It was on one of the contract sites. He has an automatic rollover and a one year severance if he gets fired.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 12:48 PM) So in essence it is different because the Marlins had already been tampering with ozzie? That is a pretty weak argument. No, its different because Ozzie, who was under contract for 2012 and was not fired, quit because HE wanted to leave, not because JR wanted him to quit. KW offered to change positions if JR wanted him to no longer be the GM.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 12:46 PM) You have no idea if that is actually true or not, but yet you keep repeating it. I'd really like to see some actual proof of that. As for the beginning it is proof that offering a resignation means you are offering to resign. It is out of your control what your boss does with it. Just because you imagine he didn't think Jerry would accept it, doesn't make it any less legally binding. Yes I do. Its in his contract. And for the 3rd time, he didn't offer to resign. He offered to switch positions. If he offered to resign, and JR accepted, he'd be out some money. If he switched positions, he still gets paid, and if the White Sox fire him he gets one year severance, something he would also be out of if he resigned. KW has been with JR since basically 1982. He knew exactly what he was going to say when given KW's offer. I think you know that as well, but don't want to admit it.
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 12:13 PM) Ozzie Guillen. He let him walk because he was making a mockery of the franchise. He let him walk because he really wanted to walk and had a 4 year contract lined up. KW never told JR he wanted out, he said "if you want to make a change....". If JR wanted to make a change, he wouldn't need KW's approval. A change would have already been made.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 12:19 PM) Ask Jay Mariotti was an offer to resign looks like. If you make the offer to your boss, it is real. LOL, you're comparing JR/KW to Jay Mariotti/Sun Times. Are you drunk? And again, KW never offered to resign. He offered to become a scout and he would be paid like a GM to scout.

QUOTE (maki @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 12:21 PM) Comparing these numbers to the draft makes you realize how ridiculous the sox are in their draft spending. you have many GUARANTEED chances to pick people with the upside of many of these guys, and you won't budge over slot. yet then we're prime players in the overbidding sweepstakes? these guys must love seeing kenny join the party just as much as seeing cashman. the dramatic difference in pricing across the two processes says there's inefficiency, at least in some players, and this much is known to the whole baseball world, except kenny of course. I don't necessarily believe the Sox are silly with their lack of spending. I'd love for them to draft guys who slip and pay overslot, but whatever they pay guys like Jordan Danks isn't going to payoff. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 10:22 AM) Based on what evidence are you judging that was a phony offer? JR doesn't let anyone just walk away from their jobs unless they really want to. He hated Larry Himes but didn't get rid of him until his contract was up, and KWs offer was if JR wanted him to walk. If he did, he would have already told him, not have KW make an offer. Isn't it peculiar that KW made this public? Especially considering how he's been pretty much avoiding the media as much as possible?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 09:38 AM) He still offered to leave his position. The rest is you speculating on his contract, which you have no idea about. When you offer someone based on the reasonable assumption they will not accept the offer, its not really an offer. Now, if KW resigned and JR talked him into staying on, that would be different. In other words, KW's offer was............phony.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 09:31 AM) Kenny answered to Jerry. He offered to resign. The rest of it is all your spin on why you hate Kenny. He didn't offer to resign. He offered to become a seven figure a year scout.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 09:30 AM) So, KW's wife should come out and start ripping Ozzie's performance? Actually, I might be kinda into watching that... KW's ex might take Ozzie's side. I wouldn't mind KW's sons taking Oney to the woodshed.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 09:25 AM) Huh? They faced the music when things didn't go so well.
