White Sox vs Royals 5-15-10 @ 6:10 pm
Dick Allen replied to The Ginger Kid's topic in 2010 Season in Review
QUOTE (joejoedairy @ May 15, 2010 -> 04:57 PM) we have two pitchers on the entire staff with era under 4. we have 5 hitters that play everyday that are hitting under 220. Its a miracle that we are only 7.5 games back. It would be great to see some of these guys get it goin. I really want to have a team worth watching for the majority of this season. I dont believe the sox are this bad. lets start the turnaround tonight! This is a good point. We just hear Greg Walker Greg Walker Greg Walker and look at all those BA under .200. Well, look at all the pitchers with ERAs over 5.00. -
QUOTE (WCSox @ May 15, 2010 -> 04:03 PM) Vizquel and Kotsay certainly have been. Then again, the rotating DH has also allowed Jones to have 111 PAs and has kept Kotsay out of the outfield for 10 games. I agree that the rotating DH is a stupid idea, but it's difficult to call it a "total failure" with the season that Jones is having. About 80 of Jones PA have been as an OF. The Sox DH's have 12 RBI, with 6 coming in one game. (Quentin) The problem with this rotating DH is you are always playing someone who isn't hitting at all. If you aren't used to it, DHing isn't a very easy adjustment for everyone. They need offense. They can be stubborn and refuse to admit they are wrong and watch the season and the fanbase melt away or they can do something about it. Its time.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 15, 2010 -> 03:00 PM) The problem though continues to not be the positions where we would have brought anyone else end. It's the positions where we were hoping to have a solid player. RF, 2b, C, SS. DH is a huge problem. The rotating DH has been a total failure. The White Sox need to be a little quicker admitting to their mistakes and fix them, unless they are ready to call it a season. Maybe it seems like an overreaction but an unnamed beat writer called the White Sox clubhouse dead. If they don't try something different, a couple weeks from now they will be basically playing out the string. As much as Thome was hated, he's better than the below .200 BA below .300 OBP below .600 OPS the White Sox DH position has brought this season. There is no doubt in my mind Quentin, Beckham, AJP, and Ramirez will improve offensively. The scary thing is where would the Sox be had Konerko, Rios and Jones started off badly as well? Those 3 will most likely slow down a bit.

The last 5 times the Sox started the season 14-21 per Gonzalez: 1983 99-63 First place, AL West 1987 77-85 Fifth place, AL West 1995 68-76 Fifth place, AL Central 1997 80-81 Second place, AL Central 2001 83-79 Third place, AL Central -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 15, 2010 -> 09:04 AM) If the Sox were anticipating having money for a significant hitter...that money could be evaporating with the walkup ticket sales. What they have to show for those guys is Rios and Peavy. I think I'm pretty satisfied with what we have to show from those 2 guys, especially now that JFP's found his grove. We should be back to complaining about the 2007 season and how the 2 key things that we brought in after it, Beckham and Quentin, have been debacles. Peavy is coming around, but he has been somewhat of a debacle this year as well. So has Floyd and Buehrle. Everyone mentions the lack of offense. The White Sox had ample opportunity to add offense this past offseason, yet passed. Now they are looking for offense. They can wait the proverbial 60 games to realize they don't have enough, but it may be too late by then. Its time JR, KW and OG realized they need better hitters and get better hitters to Chicago ASAP. Status quo isn't going to work. There's no guarantee Rios will keep hitting like he's been hitting. There's no guarantee Jones has found the fountain of youth, as a matter of fact, his stats this season are eerily similar to his stats last season after 110 AB. Beckham and Quentin will eventually hit. Ramirez will hit. They are still going to need more if they want to win a championship. If the goal is to be within 6 or 7 games of winning the AL Central so you can sell that the next season, they might as well stand pat, but a personnel move or 2 is overdue.

What a disaster this rotating DH NL lineup idea is...

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 15, 2010 -> 08:59 AM) I heard on the radio before the game that the last time Vizquel DHed was two games with the Mariners in 1993. So that means the entire decade he was about 27 to 37 years old in the AL, not one manager thought it was a good idea to DH him. Yet Ozzie decided to do it when the guy is 43 years old. f*** that. I believe last night was his first ever start as a DH. He is, or at least was, a magician with the glove. There was zero reason to DH him last night when you have a butcher at 3B. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 15, 2010 -> 08:48 AM) Look at the original post...it said "look what they did with the savings from Thome and Dye" I interpreted this as meaning "whatever money they saved by dealing Thome and Dye last year, they turned into Vizquel and Kotsay, so they're not likely to do anything even if they do save money by trading people". My response was...They saved about $1 million by trading Thome...and they didn't ever trade Dye, so it makes no sense to talk about savings from him. Trading AJ for nothing except contract savings right now would save $4-5 million or so. That's a lot more than we saved by deadling Thome and Contreras last year. I think the poster's original point was the Sox got out from under the Dye and Thome contracts,( and Contreras too), each was making $10 million plus, they upped the payroll and look what they have to show for it. Its not like dumping bad contracts is any guarantee the Sox will then spend their "available" money wisely. This past winter JR and Brooks Boyer both said the White Sox had money available to add a "significant" hitter. I have no idea what they are waiting for.

QUOTE (Lillian @ May 15, 2010 -> 07:35 AM) It's bad enough that Vizquel was in the lineup. It's worse that he was the DH. First of all, that means that he was the best hitter the Sox had on the bench to fill the role of a purely offensive spot in the lineup. Jeeeez! That's really pathetic. If Omar had to start the game, why wasn't he playing somewhere in the infield? He could have played third, and let Teahen DH. That way he would have at least had a chance to contribute on defense, which is the only thing he still does well. Moreover, it would have provided some rationale, and cover for Ozzie to explain why he was starting. Having him DH makes the decision to start Omar look really bad. It's almost like Guillen is trying to get fired. You are right, there is absolutely zero reason to have Omar DH. Why not play him in the field? How about 3B? Teahen has shown he has no clue how to play there. It may have saved a run or 2 having Omar there last night. There's a reason Omar, who has been in the big leagues 22 seasons, had never DHed until last night. Actually a couple, but Ozzie just thinks he knows more than anyone else. -
Over/under on KW vote of confidence on Guillen

QUOTE (bighurt4life @ May 15, 2010 -> 01:33 AM) I've always backed Ozzie because he brought us our WS title, but lets get honest, that was almost 5 years ago now and this team hasn't really done s*** since then and i feel like we have some definite talent on the roster. The tipping point for me was reading a poll of about 100 mlb players in ESPN mag. OZ was voted as the manager that they would least like to play for in the entire league, 30% voted for him, he finished behind Pinella who got 29% of the vote. 1/3 of players would play for 29 other managers before OZ, including Lou f***ing Pinella! And this isn't just a Cubs thing, i just think that Lou is an asshole. So if 1/3 of the team would rather play for someone else (rather, anyone else) then how hard are they going to play for the guy, how much of their focus is this going to take away. Baseball is a hard enough game without that type of a distraction. I think that OZ and Walk need to go at this point, I'm done justifying and rationalizing for them. I met Lou last summer walking my dog. He was walking down the street with his wife and a young girl I would imagine is his granddaughter. The girl wanted to play with my pup. Lou, his wife and the little girl were all very nice, now how that translates as a manager I have no idea, but Lou seems to be a decent guy off the field, and Ozzie is a good guy off the field. In the clubhouse, that's a good question. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 14, 2010 -> 09:37 PM) LOL. I really want to try the promotion. Let Piniella manage us for a week and Oz manage the Cubs. Have some fun with it, Chicago. Both teams suck balls. God this White Sox team is soooo bad. Why do we diehards care so much? Shoot us with a BB gun now. Actually, this would be a genius idea. Why don't the Cubs and Sox trade managers? -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 14, 2010 -> 09:32 PM) I can honestly say it's a pleasure to hear Paciorek again. He was always my favorite. Also, John Rooney and Wayne Hagen. Sad when the announcers being paired (Hawk and Hurt, good radio show appelation) and Whimpy and Farmio is more interesting than the game. Wasn't the reason Hagen was let go that he sounded too much like Rooney? -

Frank just said you hate to play a team after they made a change. Earlier tonight he said the change would be chaos, the Sox had an excellent chance at a sweep. I hate to be critical of the guy since he is just filling in, but.............................................. -

Hawk actually giving Frank a compliment for his defense? I'll always remember JR's comment when the Sox made some moves to make Frank a full time DH, "We had to get Frank off first base." -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 14, 2010 -> 09:19 PM) Kotsay is fine as the 25th man (if he's hitting like last year with us, not BOS)...on the roster. Not as a prominently featured player who gets 300-350 AB's. There's no point in even talking about it anymore. Inane. Exactly. A guy who gets 150-200 plate appearances maybe comes in for defense a few times. He good for that, but expecting production is ridiculous. -

All you had to do was look at the White Sox line up tonight to know Gil Meche was going to have a decent game. This team is boring and embarrassing. -

I just don't understand when your team has 1 run and 6 outs left plus struggling and a weakened line up, how you possibly leave your pitcher long enough to give up 6 runs. Frank now thinks you have to touch a ball to get an error. -

If Pods gets on first when Buehrle is pitching, I find it almost impossible he doesn't get picked off. -
We have known this DH situation was a joke from the get-go, just as we knew DeWayne Wise wasn't going to work out as a leadoff man. Its hard to believe highly paid White Sox employees couldn't or wouldn't see it as well. If its a summer of empty seats at USCF, they'll get what they deserve.
