Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
Griffey waivers can always be revoked. I'm sure he either will be placed on waivers or already has been. And I would bet the owner of the Reds would rather have the money the GM and President of the Reds agreed to pay than the prospects the White Sox were sending back. FWIW, Steve Phillips is taking credit for all the waiver claims being made the past several years. He said he claimed 150 players on waivers in 1997 in order to block trades.

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
It certainly appears as if the rumor that KW had a deal for Griffey in place before the deadline was true. It's really too bad it didn't happen, because offense is definitely hard to come by these days. In the last nine games the Sox only scored as many as 5 runs in one game. Their record could be even more dominating. I also think Hawk knows more about what's going on than most, and he keeps saying after Rowand makes another spectacular catch, "Where would he play", I think knowing that Griffey coming here isn't happening. Word of advice to Hawk, don't ask where Griffey would play during games where Timo Perez is your DH batting fifth.

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(SuperSteve @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 03:45 PM) That is such a petty reason IMHO. Its 6 weeks to be with his family, and he was given partial no-trade rights when he signed a contract that was at the time for him well below market value.

HELL YEAH
If you knew the Sox would score exactly 2 runs in each of these 3 games how many do you think you would have thought they'd have won? Since the 2nd inning of Game 1, the Yankees scored 2 freaking runs.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 01:51 PM) he is not getting his jumps like before. WTF is wrong with scotty. Stealing bases beats you up. Getting 70 last year may even be playing a part. I'm sure everybody who has ever played fantasy baseball knows steals drop as the season goes on.

QUOTE(HSC's Biggest Fan @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 01:38 PM) Ortiz is not better than Hunter and Radke IMHO. They wouldn't of had to lose both. And he's definitely better than either one.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 01:34 PM) Ortiz in the 9th inning can kill anyone. That guy is just an unbelievable clutch hitter. Thank God the Twins non-tendered him before he figured out how good he was.

My brother lives in Switzerland and this game is on there. Its the second one, the first was the Sweeney game against KC. He must be wondering how the hell the Sox have 73 wins.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 01:10 PM) What do you think the Yankees are saying of their getting shutout for seven innings against Jose Contreras? Or, seven innings of one run ball against Freddy Garcia? Remember, now, it's all relative. They have guys like A-Rod and Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui. In fact, Matsui might be the best hitter if he were put in our lineup. You only think about our side, never what they're thinking about OUR pitching. I was thinking about this last night. I don't think the Sox have a guy who would hit any higher than 6th in the Yankee line up.

If Chacon and Small are really as good as their numbers would indicate, the Yankees will make the playoffs.

Anyone can say what they want but if you are going to beat the Angels, A's or Red Sox in the postseason, nevermind the Cardinals or whoever in the NL, you are going to have to score more than 2 or 3 runs a game.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 12:43 PM) Our pitching has been steller. But its August now and this offense needs to get a bit more consistant before the postseason. Or it will be 2000 redux. We didnt pitch that bad in 2000, it was a million popups and no clutch hits. Frank, Konerko, Ordonez and Lee combined to go 3-40 in the ALDS. Frank and Konerko were 0-18. The one Seattle pitcher who got knocked around a little was Freddy Garcia.

The good news is the Sox have scored 5 runs in this series but still have a chance to take 2 out of 3.

QUOTE(CYGarland @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 12:35 PM) I'm not saying he has to hit Hr's, but a few doubles and triples would be nice. Pods actually has been hitting more doubles lately. Given the slump he has been it, it could be good news if he is able to snap out of it.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 12:33 PM) I just hope that he doesn't get a big fat contract in the off-season. I'm Ok with him as our leadoff man, but at the right price. He's signed through next season. It's less than $2 million. Considering he's only at about $500,000 this season its still a good deal.

QUOTE(GBlum27 @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 12:22 PM) What a strange reason to dislike him. He's got a .350 OBP with a billion steals - is it his fault he doesn't get driven in? Do you want him to steal home? When the One Dog and Ray Durham and Tim Raines were leading off, they all scored 100+ runs a season. Its not his fault he doesn't score all the time, although he could hit a homer every now and then. I think its a flaw in the smallball or smartball philosophy. I always agreed that stolen bases were undervalued, but I'm beginning to agree with the Billy Beane guys that they are overvalued. Pods isn't even in the top 50 for runs scored, and considering how many times he has been caught stealing and picked off where it was not ruled a caught stealing, his OBP is distorted. In reality it should be about 40 or 50 points lower.

QUOTE(CYGarland @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 12:19 PM) Pods has been Horrible hitting w/ risp since May. He hit .154 in June, .143 in July, and a ROBUST .000 so far in August He's the most overrated player on Soxtalk. Everybody loves his stolen bases, but not only can he not drive home runs, he doesn't score that many.
