I think they got half a million.

Spring Training thread
Back in the day of red uniforms and an astroturf infield, they started the night games at 8 pm. The problem with the 6 pm games is the lighting. Maybe the new LED lights change that. I don't know, but they sure did make a huge difference when it got dark.

TLR publicity train
People who think he is some sort of genius, will be bitching about either his line ups, his bullpen usage, his strategy by the end of the first series this season. He's a better in game manager than Rickey, but remember, Roland Hemond also almost fired him. It's great they can use the failed Hawk as GM experiment to cover up, Tony wasn't this baseball God in the dugout. What made him a HOFer baseball person where the HOFer baseball people who played for him. That's legit. One odd thing, is Tony seemed worried he would have his HOF status taken away if he returned to the dugout, but doesn't even think it could possibly be taken away if he takes out a family driving his SUV hammered.

TLR publicity train
If he has a media obilgation on day 1 of spring training, he should make it on time. He's the manager, it isn't going to change, but Tony is an ass who will eventually b**** about the media, yet he treats them this way. In the Celebrity Death thread I posted a tweet from an older writer who was covering HS sports in Oakland back when Tony was managing the A's. This guy got bumped up to cover the A's one series against the White Sox. The Sox beat the A's and Eck in the 9th. The headline, which the writer has no part of said Eck blew a save. He didn't. The story had it right, the headline had it wrong. Tony went after this guy the next day. The tribute was to Pedro Gomez who was this guy's competition who told Tony to lay off the guy, quit trying to embarrass him, he knew damn well the guy wasn't responsible for the headline. If you treat people like shit, don't be expected to be put on a throne by he same people.

MLB 2020-21 off season catch all
Plus his father peaked as a 24 year old, then got hurt and never really played a full season again. Had a couple of pretty good partial seasons after that. So he has that example, and a lot of the same genes.

MLB 2020-21 off season catch all
Despite that, if you are him, why wouldn't you sign it? It's more money than you will ever need. Are you really concerned about heirs 3 generations from now? For all you know they may be assholes.

MLB 2020-21 off season catch all
Exactly. If he is as great as many think, doesn't get hurt, and becomes an all time great, he may have cost himself $100 million, but it's $100 million he would never use. $340 million vs. $440 million will make no difference in his life. Down the road with his heirs, yes. It's a no brainer for him to sign IMO. This is a huge risk for the Padres. It will probably be the last contract of the kid's career. You wonder if he will be able to stay healthy and motivated.

Hendriks Really Wants to Play for TLR
There are 30 of these jobs in the universe. I doubt Hahns track record would give him the ability to pick and choose. If he wants to be a GM it will be of the White Sox. You could tell he was a little off back at the LaRussa press conference. Really most in his spot probably would be. But he will get over it if he hasn't. Just about everyone has had a boss overrule or step on your toes. Sometimes it works out and sometimes the boss should have just let you do your job.

Pretty damning quote. Just tells you the quality of free agent they try to engage.

Giolito Working on a New Pitch..."The Downer"
Prior to 2019, most pitches Giolito threw were downers.

The players don't want a minimum. They have called out teams for not spending, but a minimum also means a maximum.

Jonathan Lucroy signs minor league deal with White Sox
Chances aee you wouldn't have to give up very much to acquire him. If you think he is the second coming of Edgar Martinez, you probably would be willing to offer enough to make the White Sox say yes. All the cult heroes over the years have proven why we post on message boards and don't run teams.

Spring training broadcast schedule
I was pointing out the 2019 ratings which could have been a reason they only had 6 games on last year.
-
Spring training broadcast schedule
Last year was the first without the Cubs on the station and the Sox had some of the shittiest TV ratings in baseball. The whitezox.com telecasts will still rule, but I bet post Covid with a more interesting team, they will put more on the station.

COVID-19/Coronavirus thread
My wife who has asthma, had an appointment for March 6th. Her doctor called her this morning and asked her if she wanted a shot today. She is there now. I am so thrilled.
-
Spring training broadcast schedule
Probably because the station has been in cost cutting mode and spring games don't bring many viewers so it isn't worth the cost. Probably when Covid passes, they will show a lot more games when thei finances are back in order.

Jonathan Lucroy signs minor league deal with White Sox
It means 30 teams wouldn't guarantee him money. If I think I am suddenly healed and back to my 27 year old self, I can think of more desirable places to show that than behind Grandal. I hope the guy is great but the odds are overwhelming he is a 0.0 WAR player.

Lucroy is so great he commanded a minor league contract.

MLB 2020-21 off season catch all
How many teams in the NBA have a legit shot at a title every year? Way less than MLB. Same with the NFL. I think it is a shame a team like the Blackhawks built what could have been a dynasty with maybe 2 or 3 mor Stanley Cups, but had to trade players as they became more expensive because of a salary cap. MLB hasn’t had a repeat champion since 2000. Yes , there are some teams that will probably never win, but that is the case even in the hard cap sports.

MLB 2020-21 off season catch all
But they rarely take advantage of their advantage. We are White Sox fans. Look at the advantage the White Sox should have over their division rivals, yet ownership plays down to their level. I know you don't find that noble. The Dodgers above their payroll which will cost them $14 million do also throw a lot into the revenue sharing pool. Winning a WS makes you some money. If they want to spend it on players more power to them.

MLB 2020-21 off season catch all
So the Dodgers owners should be pocketing the money and not spending it trying to win.

So maybe we don’t need another reliable starter after all
Look at what the Rays are doing. They are trying to get 7 or 8 guys to give them around 100 innings. Guys probably aren't going to go 200 innings in 2021. Everyone seems to know this but the White Sox

Jonathan Lucroy signs minor league deal with White Sox
Lucroy has a composite 0.1 fWAR the last 4 seasons. If you think his neck surgery is going to return him to his former self at age 34, I love your optimism, but don't share it.

Fangraphs projects Abreu to have the largest dropoff in WAR next season - in the entire MLB!
I think part of it is Jose had more protection. I know advanced guys say there is no such thing because it is very hard to quantify, but ask any pitcher or manager or catcher if it matters who is hitting next when a good hitter is up, and they will all give you the same answer. Couple that with the fact Jose doesn't really take his walks, surrounding him with good hitters is only going to help his numbers.
