  1. Isn't Teump kind of stuck with the moron comment? He can't fire him because then he admits its true and how much worse can a President look than having his SoS call him a f***ing moron? And despite his, appearances are important to Trump. In a way Tillerson has him checkmated here, and maybe he or one of his buddies leaked it to jab at Trump and tie his hands all at the same time. If ithey did, it was a genius move.
  2. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 02:56 PM) There were people out there that were plenty upset about Tatis, thinking he might be a pretty prospect, I certainly wasn't one of them. And I don't agree with Greensox on anything but I think it's completely fair to say that the Sox didn't know what they had in Tatis. I mean, they clearly didn't. No one did. Even the great Theo signed 9 international players to larger bonuses. The Sox gave Franklin Reyes $1.5 million. He's got a .542 OPS. Lucius Fox got $6 million. I bet you couldn't trade him straight up now.
  3. He may have been casing a Chance the Rapper concert a couple of weeks ago. If he was, and maybe I'm wrong, but it would appear that he wasn't targeting a specific group of people. I would think the audience for these shows would be quite different. Supposedly he was a country music guy so maybe just killing lots of people and becoming famous was the motivation. Maybe they have a note or something, but it doesn't seem normal that after this amount of time, there appears to be no solid motive.
  4. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 02:31 PM) See, this is the part that I don't get. With as strong as the gun lobby is in this country, we're infinitely closer to Medicare For All than we are to the government taking our guns away - and I don't think we're particularly close to actually having Medicare For All enacted. Because firearms are not titled, they are really, really easy to sell to basically anybody on the secondary market right? Maybe I'm missing something here because I'm not a gun owner, and if I am, someone can educate me otherwise... I would venture to guess most of the guns used in Chicago killings weren't purchased at the local gun store.
  5. QUOTE (ptatc @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 02:25 PM) I totally agree. As I said I think a logical place to start is somehow limiting high capacity magazines. However, I also understand the idea of "when does it stop." Simple things like when the government made seat belts mandatory. People fought it saying that they will eventually fine people for not wearing them. The government response was always that they just wanted to help make people safer and would not ticket people for choosing not to. A couple decades later it changes. A lot of stuff is like that but it winds up being better. The situation evolves. Anyone still really pissed off there is no smoking in bars? They would all go out of business... How many here are old enough, and you don't have to be that old, when people smoking in the office was no big deal? Now, not only do people not smoke in bars or in the office, they don't do it in their cars, and go outside even at home. If it's all about safety, and the vast majority of gun owners say they have one for precisely that, why not make owning guns safer for everyone?
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 11:27 AM) Update on Morongate: Tillerson didn't actually deny calling Trump a moron; NBC's reporter says their source actually said he called Trump a "f***ing Moron;" CNN has verified the story. lol As Hawk would say, whether you think he's a moron or a f***ing moron, you're right either way.
  7. QUOTE (ptatc @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 01:45 PM) If you are trained with them there is no reason to be scared to death of them. The obvious answer would be that everything would be better if there were no guns. However, that is not feasible in this country. I can honestly say that over 40 years of hunting since I was 10 no one I know has ever had an accident or been shot. Maybe if everybody was trained as a child we wouldn't have the issues of people becoming fascinated with them. It's way of live where I grew up and nobody had issues. I really don't know the answer other than a good place to start is to somehow restrict high capacity magazines in some capacity. I know I would want to give up my shotguns and rifles for my hobbies, sports and protection against coyotes and such on the farm. I'm sure there are plenty of people who were trained how to use guns at a very young age that still use them or used them very irresponsibly.
  8. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 01:19 PM) Something that hasn't been brought up but is important - Stanton would have to approve any trade that would be agreed upon. He has full no-trade protection. I would also imagine that transfers if/when he is traded too. Which basically means he will need some sort of trade kicker.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 01:40 PM) I don't think you know what you are saying to be honest. Oh I do. The White Sox gave this guy $700k. Although a decent amount, 30 others in his class got more, and 2 others received the same. The 700k in the 2015 draft would have slotted between the 84th and 85th pick, so it wasn't like he was considered by anyone a first round type talent. So the White Sox have this guy they like but obviously don't see the 16 year old as a top prospect, and really, no other team did either or his signing bonus would have been higher than $700k and 32 other players in the same class wouldn't have received the same amount or more. He never plays a game for the White Sox organization, and gets traded, pretty much as a lottery ticket (if you look at the White Sox other international signings, several of which were given bigger bonuses there hasn't been a lot of huge success) along with Erik Johnson for James Shields and a bunch of cash. At the time of the trade, I personally didn't read one thing how Fernando Tatis Jr. was going to make Rick Hahn rue the day he made this trade. I think James Shields' performance did that. Now Tatis has developed and many think he is one of the top prospects in baseball. We will see what happens. Prospects are suspects until they put up numbers in the major leagues. He certainly would have helped the White Sox farm system ranking cause, but I don't think they give trophies for that.
  10. I guess they could bring a couple of those guys back, but the question would be, why? Maybe Brantly if he wants to spend next summer in Charlotte.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 01:37 PM) This is so circular. It's really not. You are so interested in arguing with me, you have no idea what I've stated.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 01:23 PM) A guy signed for $700k and in the top 30 isn't a lottery ticket guy. That is more like Reynaldo Lopez who was a $10k signing. The rivisionist history here to pain the White Sox as ignorant of a guy they paid top dollar for is bizarre. He was in a 3 way tie for 31st highest bonus in his class. If you have the 31st pick in the draft, it's pretty much a lottery pick. I'm not blaming the White Sox for trading him. Look at the vast majority of international guys that get his money. They don't work out. He might not either. 16 year olds are very hard to project. There is no way he would have been available for $700k if teams thought he would be what he's been. I think Michael Ynoa got $4 million.
  13. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 01:16 PM) One thing I feel kinda sure of. Had Tatis Jr actually played on the field for some games prior to the trade it would have never happened. THe rumors about him began almost immediately for when he took the field. Probably. It goes back to what Buddy Bell said at a Soxfest seminar. Most of these signees are scouted not playing games but at these showcases where they take BP, make some throws, and sprint. He was saying you wouldn't believe some of the basic things that need to be taught to these guys after they are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars, because they haven't played many games. Tatis probably had a better background actually playing because of his father.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 01:03 PM) Yet the White Sox were the ones who signed him. Where they erred was in not knowing that San Diego wasn't disclosing full medical records on their players and thought they were getting the historical James Shields, and not the one with a bum shoulder. Which is precisely my point. The guy was a lottery ticket who exploded. He never played one inning for the White Sox organization. If he were considered an all over top 10 talent, the Sox would never have traded him. Their bonus would have been a lot more, and maybe another team would have offered even more.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 12:58 PM) He got a $600,000 bonus. While not the biggest, he was on the podium with the other big July 2 signings for the White Sox and was the Sox second biggest signing that year. Where did it rank overall? Obviously it was more than some, but not one that is given to someone they think will be a top 10 overall prospect in 2 years. I'm guessing no other team offered him more than the White Sox, and if it was then considered what he is considered now, or even anywhere near, his bonus would have been significantly higher. When you are signing 16 year olds, there aren't many sure things. They are pretty much all lottery tickets.
  16. QUOTE (ptatc @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 12:37 PM) I was hunting when I was 10 with both rifles and shotguns. Good for you. Why is it there is a bigger problem with people getting shot individually and massively more in the US than any other country, where there are more guns than anywhere else, when learning how to use a gun only teaches kids and adults alike responsibility? How are these other countries able to survive with a fraction of the guns, a minuscule defense budget, not enough nuclear bombs the blow the world up 10 times over.... One of my roommates in college had a rifle. He was a hunter and kept it in the closet. I was scared to death of that thing.
  17. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 07:17 AM) He was more than a lottery ticket, and he "just happened to explode" such that within 2 months of the trade he was a top 100 prospect and rising fast. The Sox didn't know what they had in Tatis; and they probably didn't really know what they were getting in Shields (how many Sox scouts were in Seattle?). Shouldn't have given a prospect of any sort for Shields- pure salary dump was more than enough. Considering his signing bonus, I don't think anyone knew about Tatis. It was a lottery ticket that exploded. Whether it translates into a long major league career is yet to be seen.
  18. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 12:15 PM) I guess he shouldn't count but figured he was part of that 24. Colon and Thompson (I may be missing someone else here) shouldn't technically count either because they're not on the playoff rosters. You did really well. They are counting guys who basically played for the teams. Santiago, Boone Logan, even Ryan Rayburn.
  19. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 10:46 AM) In no particular order: 1) Safety/Protection. Rabid animals, predators like Coyotes and Wolves killing your families livelihood, etc. Not everyone lives 10 feet from each other in cities. They actually have to deal with nature. And yes, personal protection from other people. 2) Hunting. It's a good way to teach patience and calmness. Having a 10 year old in 2017 sit out in the middle of nature for 4 hours waiting for a 2 minute window of action would be highly beneficial IMO. 3) I think it's a great way to learn about safety and protocol and responsibility. Most people who are anti-guns have never touched a gun and are afraid of them. Putting them in your hands is an entirely different experience and learning at a young age their awesome power is a good thing. 4) Fun. It's fun as hell to shoot cans or other targets like a Tannerite pack (target with a small explosive that goes boom when you hit it from a distance). How many people have been killed by coyotes and wolves in the US the last 10 years? California has one reported death by coyote. That was in 1981. And coyotes are coming into urban areas, so if you need them for coyotes and other personal protection, why shouldn't a city dwelling 10 year old have a cache of firearms? And I know the responsibilty and respect, and patience and calmess argument, but they are 10 year olds. Their minds aren't fully developed. They make poor decisions.
  20. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 10:40 AM) Learn to handle it with respect and knowledge in a setting where guns are sometimes required. Why would they be required? And you still have a mind not fully developed that would have access and know how in using it. A lot more could go wrong than any benefit IMO. If they aren't old enough to drink or smoke or drive, I don't see why they should be more than fine to shoot guns.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 09:52 AM) Supposedly there was a stink rose about the Hawks doing it by someone else in the league, so they did a pretty deep investigation. There was some amount of thought it would be disallowed. It was kind of odd, and very convenient for the Blackhawks. I know when I first heard it, I was a bit skeptical (still am) and if it were another team, I would have probably laughed about it.
  22. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 10:02 AM) If you live in the country, it's actually not a bad idea to teach your kids how to use guns. I'm not saying a 5 year old, but 10, 12, 14, yeah. I did as a kid. Assault rifles, no, but rifles, shotguns, even pistols, yes. What is the benefit of a 10 year old shooting rifles and shotguns and pistols?
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 09:07 AM) According to DTJ its for kids to get into shooting. Ear plugs apparently dont exist Guns in the hands of children is something we need more of.
  24. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 02:16 PM) Four of the largest rebuilding trades by the Sox ended up with the other team making the playoffs. Eaton - WAS Sale - BOS Quintana - CHC Frazier/Robertson/Kahnle - NYY BONUS: Clippard - HOU I read where there are 24 ex-White Sox in the playoffs this year. So there is room for s***ty players on playoff rosters.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 08:59 AM) It's always 75% public relations. That's not a bad thing! Public relations is not a bad thing! People need to feel like the government is paying attention during these things. You've also got an entire island that is basically going to be dealing with PTSD - just having the tiniest bit of emotional support will help. The government needs to be compelled to pay attention during these things. I don't care if it is about him and he is a totalitarian racist jerk, our population put this racist in charge of the government and the government needs to function. People are hurt if the government can't do normal things, and yes that even includes press releases. Air Force One isn't that expensive - buy one less F-35 and it's basically free. Don't be penny wise, pound foolish. His comments prove he is not paying attention. Send someone else with a clue. And one less F-35 doesn't make it free. That's money that could be spent on something that actually mattered, not that our government is capable of doing that, but at least potentially it is. I just wonder when he goes to Las Vegas today how much it will help the loved ones of those killed and the wounded when he takes credit for the police response, and then goes on about how now is not the time to bring up gun control. I'm sure there are people in hospitals with Obamacare, and he's doing everything he can to make it go away. Maybe he will spin personal bankruptcy can be very lucrative.
