QUOTE (daa84 @ Feb 22, 2017 -> 07:43 AM) i consider myself a baseball purist, and i have no problem with this rule. as most have alluded to - this wont significantly alter the pace of play, but this affects so few plays overall its not a huge deal. Now if they end up moving toward the absurd runner on 2nd to start extra inning thing... This exactly. The way the game has evolved, it is going to be a longer game. Bullpens are going to be heavily used, with the steroid era over and with sabermetrics in the mainstream, the typical hitter is going to become a bit more selective, therefore more pitches are going to be thrown. They, like was mentioned before, are going to have to do more, like limit catchers visits, a pitch clock would be nice to eliminate some downtime, but it is more the pace than the length of the game that is the problem. We have all been to 3 hour games that seemed like 6 hours, and 3 hour games that seemed like an hour and a half. Eliminating the lollygagging will make for a better experience for everyone. There is enough downtime in baseball even if it is played quickly.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 22, 2017 -> 05:12 AM) I was just pointing out the Kings are f***ed. They simply no longer exist. They were f***ed either way. This probably gets them closer to actually selecting first in the next few years. But as long as their owner is involved in basketball decisions, they are going to have to hit the jackpot in the draft for a chance to be decent.
-
People are really complaining they don't get to see 4 balls thrown for an intentional walk because once every few years someone actually hits the ball? In the grand scheme it won't save much time, I think they said 35 seconds on average, but it isn't exactly eliminating a can't be missed situation. This has been the rule in HS and college for years.

Hostetler was saying these guys are coming fast and we will know all about them soon at Soxfest.

QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Feb 19, 2017 -> 02:09 PM) Ok you can debate my phrasing but the point is that anytime you trade a bundle of young talent for an established player, you are giving up upside. No team trades X current value for prospects that equal Y probability of reaching the same X value in the future. Swisher was 27 years old signed to a team friendly contract. At the time Gio was not all that highly thought of around here. It is a trade contending teams make, and the Sox were a contender. The trade didn't cause the White Sox to miss out on any championship runs.

QUOTE (Two-Gun Pete @ Feb 19, 2017 -> 11:54 AM) While all of this may vary varying degrees of truthiness to it, I had my doubts about Swisher. He was primarily a 1B & corner OF prior to coming here. And though he had a decent OBP record, he was never a leadoff man. I suspected that Ozzie would "Square Peg" Swisher into roles in the field & in the lineup to which he was not ideally suited. In the end, KW had to "fix" the mistake of acquiring Swisher by getting the desiccated remains of Junior to play CF. And sure, the SOX won the division, but by then Swisher was riding pine. To top it all off, KW stupidly gave him away for a pile of poo, rather than keeping him here long enough for him to recoup some trade value. (As Hahn is rightly doing now with Robertson.) Long story short, he was the wrong player at the wrong time for the wrong team at the wrong price. So he was just horrible , a square peg. But KW should never have rid himself of him. Hindsight is quite a thing.

QUOTE (buhbuhburrrrlz @ Feb 19, 2017 -> 03:24 AM) potential of Butler to Boston trade will loom over the entire week https://www.yahoo.com/sports/video/woj-repo...-025519235.html IMO, the chances of GarPax pulling the trigger on a Butler trade mid season is about as good as the White Sox winning 100 games. There will be a lot of talk for nothing.

Most of Soxtalk loved the trade. Swisher was a power guy high OBP. His only year with the Sox, they did win the division .

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 19, 2017 -> 10:09 AM) Speaking of fake news, Trump continues to make s*** up by citing a fake attack in Sweden. Ladies and gentlemen, our President is literally making up stories and inciting fear. Don't believe the media unless it is Fox News. They are the enemy. Trump gets his info from psychos and the internet. Far more reliable.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Feb 18, 2017 -> 08:32 AM) Pitch framing is a topic that has come up especially in relation to Tyler Flowers. Below is an article on Chris Sale and the effect it had on him as well as mention or AJ and Ross. Not a big concern for us until we find our catcher of the future. Another note, looks like Blake Swihart will be odd man out aqain in Boston if White Sox scouts think he is worth a shot. Moved back to catcher full time from Lf but only 24. http://www.providencejournal.com/sports/20...tarting-catcher But after a winter that saw the Red Sox prioritize defense over offense at first base, traditionally an offense-first position, it's easy to imagine them prioritizing defense over offense at catcher. Analysts have pointed out how poor White Sox catchers framed pitches for Chris Sale last year, a potential contributor to a his career-high 3.34 ERA. By giving away strikes at the bottom of the zone last season, Chicago catchers cost Sale 6.3 runs -- a drop in 17 runs from the previous season, a season in which Sale was throwing mostly to well-regarded framer Tyler Flowers. (Flowers tallied 12 framing runs in 2016, sixth-best in baseball, while White Sox catchers Dioner Navarro and Alex Avila were worth minus-19.6 and minus-6.8 framing runs, respectively.) Framing for Sale is no easy task. The same delivery that makes his pitches hard for hitters to see makes it hard for catchers to beat the ball to the spot. Flowers had caught Sale for three seasons, each of which saw him frame pitches better than the previous. "Sale throws a lot of low strikes, so you have to be ready," Leon said. Like any other skill, some catchers frame low pitches better than others. Vazquez has drawn raves from Red Sox pitchers for his ability to keep the ball at the knees. "A.J. Pierzynski was better with high balls," Levangie said. "David Ross was better down in the zone. It depends on their frame at times. It depends where their eye sits and the relationship to the glove." Swihart has the yips. http://deadspin.com/blake-swihart-appears-...yips-1792495549

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 16, 2017 -> 01:25 PM) Andrew Baggarly @extrabaggs Rollins said he made the wrong decision to sign w/White Sox over Giants last year. Eager to get work at 3B/2B in addition to SS. LMAO. I think the Sox and Sox fans think the same thing.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 16, 2017 -> 09:39 AM) We were supposed to get sick of winning “I do know what to do and I would know how to bring ISIS to the table or beyond that, defeat ISIS very quickly and I’m not going to tell you what it is… All I can tell you it is a foolproof way of winning.”

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 16, 2017 -> 09:11 AM) Jimmy Butler is an All-Star. Giannis can be the league's best player. Stop. Just stop digging. It's embarassing for you. You embarrassed yourself when you mentioned Boogie Cousins as a great reason for the Kings "upside" . 7th year in the league, 0 playoff games. But hey, they finally got over the 30 win mark last year. Barely. Then you mention GarPax trading for guys on the teams you lump with the Bulls so they can be a "fun" second round exit. Seriously? The Bulls are hopeless. The problem with the NBA is that there are at least 20 teams pretty much in the same boat.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 16, 2017 -> 08:59 AM) Trump's Yemini raid that killed a Navy SEAL and an 8 year old girl also killed a US-friendly local tribal leader. https://apnews.com/d927fc2962f44a6d8edf6a790b556bbc Totally a success. If Hillary won the election and green lighted this mission and the exact same thing happened, it would have been Benghazi all over again. I am just shocked Trump hasn't defeated ISIS yet. He knows far more than any General how to defeat them. Why is he messing with our safety and not taking care of this immediately?

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Feb 16, 2017 -> 08:51 AM) Why is he holding a rally in Florida on Saturday? Is that a normal thing presidents have done in the past? There's no time for stuff like that. He will be working his ass off in the White House. He won't be Obama and be on the golf course when there is so much work to do. Oh wait, that was Trump the candidate.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 16, 2017 -> 08:16 AM) That "other" team was completely built around the player whose knee exploded. Giannis Antetokounmpo is a 22 year old monster and has the highest upside of anyone in the entire NBA. How do you ignore him in your reponse? You know how the NBA works? ELITE f***ING TALENT. The Bucks have it. The next KD has already fallen in their laps. Now please, go educate yourself and then begin responding. K thanks. So you ignore Jimmy Butler and tell someone else to educate themselves. The Bulls were 45-37 the season Rose played 0 games. It doesn't appear he was all they had. And how many titles has KD won before joining a team I mentioned while still playing with Westbrook and Harden, 2 guys I am sure you would consider ELITE f***ING TALENT?

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Feb 16, 2017 -> 08:01 AM) The Nuggets are going to be pretty good, pretty soon. And even if Jabari is completely broken once Middleton gets back to full health they still have a very nice young core to work with. EDIT: And I'm not saying either is going to win a championship any time soon because they aren't but including them into a category of teams that suck or have no upside is just wrong. What's upside? Win 50 games with no chance at a title? Upside to me is a true shot. It used to be being good enough not to draft high, but not good enough to win was NBA hell. Now it's upside? IMO today's NBA sucks because there are very few teams with a legit chance to win it all. I will admit there are a lot more better players than there were in the early 2000s, and the games are far more interesting. It's really the only pro team sport that is like this, and that is an issue. The regular season is basically an 82 game exhibition. Fans even praising coaches for not playing their stars so they can rest and be ready for the playoffs in a few months. Most games don't matter. Unless there are major injuries GS vs. Cleveland can be put on the DirectTv viewing guide for June before the season starts.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 16, 2017 -> 07:38 AM) Dude DID YOU JUST INCLUDE THE F*CKING BUCKS ON A LIST WITHOUT UPSIDE? Also, the Nuggets are on the rise. Jesus, Jokic is a f***ing monster. The Kings have a superstar so that helps them. Pistons suck. Hornets are basically the Bulls, so they are no good. BUT JESUS MAN THE BUCKS ARE REALLY RISING. If not for Jabari's knee exploding again, they'd have been the team with the biggest upside imo over the next 5 years. The Nuggets are also just a complete joy as already stated. So, Dick Allen, here's your goals for today. 1) get a clue 2) then talk NBA Thanks! Guess what? Jabari's knee did explode. Seem familiar? It should. Another team geographically closer that was "rising" had the same issue, and look what happened. Would you trade Butler straight up for Cousins? That idiot will never win a title. The 25-31 Nuggets might be a complete joy to you, but they have no shot at a title anytime soon unless the next Lebron or Michael somehow falls into their lap. The way the new NBA works, it is going to be harder to sign the premium free agents. For the majority of the NBA, they need a miracle draft pick to really be a contender in the next 5 years. Reality.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Feb 16, 2017 -> 07:06 AM) You're not paying attention then. The super team, pace and space era is the greatest era of basketball we've ever seen. They're plenty of good teams in the league. 20 years ago the Rockets (let alone the warriors spurs and cavs) are breaking records against the watered down, best international player in the game at that time might've been Toni Kukoc 90's era. lol. But even the bad ones, say Philly and Denver, have great upside. Really, other than the Nets, Knicks (until they trade Melo), Bulls and Kings, every other team in the league has upside. add the pelicans to the list of teams with no upside. poor anthony davis. More than half the league isn't even .500. I'd hold off on Orlando Magic championship swag any time soon. Hornets? Kings? Nuggets? Pistons? Bucks? Upside? Really?

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Feb 15, 2017 -> 05:30 PM) For me, it's not that I'm not interested at all. I said it's the least interested I have been in the Sox, maybe ever. I'm 26. I've watched on average probably 135 games a year (maybe more, but can't watch day games at work), since I was in high school. I'm obsesssed. But I've always liked that the Sox have tried to win every year, even though it hasn't worked. Generally they've been fairly competitive each year since 03, with a few outliers. I fully understand that the rebuild is necessary, and I'm behind it, but it sucks that it's Feb 15 and I already know the Sox aren't going to relevant at all this season. I'll still watch a bunch of games and root for the Sox to win until it's obvious that they're terrible - that shouldn't take long - but it's just different. Therefore, it's the least interested I've been in awhile. Baseball is how I spend my summers - I don't expect that to change this summer, but it's deflating knowing there is zero chance of playing in October. Yes. 2014 they really were stepping back but they had Abreu coming in and Eaton to keep it interesting. Now all the interesting guys they brought in will be at Charlotte and Birmingham. It reminds me of the teams from 86-89 when you had to win the division to make the playoffs. It was hopeless, but I guess my youth always thought maybe somwthing can happen. Then you watch Russ Morman play and reality sets in. It will be interesting to see how Abreu, Frazier and Melky do I suppose. Anderson is probably the big One to watch. If he flourishes that will be fun. If he goes the other way like some publications seem to think, we will be looking forward to watching the Bears lose quickly.
