White Sox Acquire James Shields
QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Jun 5, 2016 -> 07:02 AM) All of a sudden $27 million is nothing. How much were we short on Alex Gordon, Dexter Fowler, and others? $27 million isn't nothing, and he is signed for the next 2 seasons as well. The Sox also have LaRoches money to play with, which they didn't when the others were a available. If he sucks, this will be a bit of a drain. If he can be a solid #4 starter, it isn't a lot of money in today's game. The Padres still will be paying him more than the Sox. I wonder what the breakdown is in Padres payments to the Sox, as far as what per season.

Jason Coats injured
QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 09:20 PM) Who is better at CF, Shuck or Eaton? It is that simple. Even Trout doesn't play 162 games. You are being ridiculous. Should Yost be blamed for the Gordon/Moustakis collision that screwed them both up? Shuck is probably the same in RF or CF. Eaton is far superior in RF and made a great play earlier. There are things you can put on the manager, this isn't one of them.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 09:04 PM) I actually mentioned it last night, thanks for being around. Before joining the Sox Shuck had played 9 games in CF which came in his 1st year in the MLB. Somehow all the other teams he was on knew not to play him CF all year long. There is no reason for Shuck to be playing CF right now He played there several games last season and many games in the minor leagues over 300 games, he didn't play there with the Angels because they have this guy named Trout.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 08:39 PM) It is the position you put your players in.. Please explain a good reason for a guy whole has only 9 starts at CF with any team not named the White Sox when we have a guy who has played there for a few years in RF already? It is too obvious who should be in CF with Jackson out but for some reason Ventura can't do that. Eaton is a better RF. he is elite and made a great play earlier in the game. Shuck has played CF, besides, if Shuck was calling for the ball, the problem is with Coats. Did you ask why Eaton was in RF and Shuck in CF before the game? This isn't the first game they were set up that way. Joe Maddon put Bryant in CF when he never played there before last year. What an idiot.

White Sox Acquire James Shields
Hahn told Levine this isn't their last trade and they have the money for more additions. Hopefully a good bat is available soon, and Melky comes back, Abreu gets on track, and the team should be back to winning some games. Personally, I think one of the big problems is they are letting good pitches to hit go by without swinging. Yes meatheads will be angry with you if you hit the ball hard but out on pitch one, but that is often a pretty good pitch to hit. It is where Sale got burned today.

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 07:52 PM) Wouldn't have happened if Robin actually used a guy who had experience playing in center field with Jackson out. But nope can't do that...LOL. Mark Yeah, that collision was the manager's fault what a joke.

Shields
QUOTE (ronkark @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 07:28 PM) Why is reporting "Tuesday or Wednesday"? Players get dealt all the time and manage to make it in a day. We're freefalling and we want 3 more starts before he gets in there? I like the deal. Not gonna save season but he'll be solid. And i May be most excited at that pickoff move. Dude can actually stop a run game. Can you say that about any of our starters? For the most part teams steal at will. Be nice to have someone who looks at that stuff. Won't miss EJ. Tatis seemed to have upside but never know. Need a bat. Maybe two bats. And a real lefty relief pitcher. He wouldn't be pitching tomorrow. Monday is an off day. I would imagine he pitches Tuesday or Wednesday depending on who they choose to replace.

White Sox Acquire James Shields
Personally, I would have waited this one out. Tatis is is a wildcard, so far away, so I wouldn't sweat his loss. EJ has had numerous chances and the same thing keeps happening. There is really no reason to think that won't change, I do think Shields is an upgrade over Gonzalez/Latos, but not a big one. I just hope they still have money to spend on a hitter, and maybe another reliever as Kanle doesn't look like a guy you really want to have on the mound now. Shields will give you an extra inning than the pitcher he replaces, that could help the bullpen. But they need to score runs. A positive is if he can pitch like a #4 starter, that is one less piece next season they have to acquire. Still, I would have waited a bit. Maybe with the owner's comments SD was going to get what they could for him right now, and they couldn't wait, but I see no reason why there would be much of a market for him.

6/4 - White Sox @ Tigers Game Thread
QUOTE (ronkark @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 06:34 PM) Frazier career low .218 Abreu .251 with no power and horrible run production Shuck .130 with multiple defensive mistakes in 2 games. Rollins .222 and has yet to dive for a ball. Garcia .248. Remember his latest breakout last month? Uh huh. Navarro .226 Lawrie .251 is exactly what we expected when we got him. Sale - great start. Very disappointing last few. 2 K's? Albers - Junk baller. Jackson .259 and on pace for 0HRs. Oh and he's dropped 2 flyballs. Sands .241. 24K's in 54 at bats is remarkable. that's over 40% Avila .214 on pace for 0Hrs Rodon - Still waiting for some sign of further development toward supposed front of rotation potential we heard so much about. I thought 12-13 wins would show that. It's not there yet. Works behind guys. Throws way too many pitches. Purke - he gone Kahnle - no more please. This is vintage '15 Sox. But hey at least we got a declining, expensive fly ball pitcher in a homer park. He'll be great at eating innings while we don't score any runs anyway. Why do you watch the games?

Detroit was sitting first pitch fastball on Sale and he was throwing 92. He should think about breaking balls on pitch 1.

official: White Sox purchase contract of Jason Coats
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 10:27 AM) Frazier knows how and Shuck played in triple A during his stint there. They are fine. A good backup 1B isn't a huge necessity. Yes. Saladino can play there, and Avila has played there for Detroit.

(Insert Celeb Here) is Dead
About 10 years ago I was walking down Jackson and about half a block in front of me, a big commotion breaks out. It turns out Muhammad Ali was coming out of a building. I walked over, he was in a wheelchair. People were taking pictures. His helpers passed out little cards that said best wishes from Muhammad Ali with his signature below. I still have it. I don't know if he really signed it. Probably copied, but I have run into several celebrities and athletes in my life, and that was the first time even when I was a little kid, I was star struck. The only other time was a couple of years later when Michael Jordan was working out at my health club.

Robin Ventura sacrifice bunted with the 3 hitter in the 7th inning
Terry Francona had Jason Kipnis and his over .800 OPS bunt last night. Had him bunt several times last season as well. Is he an idiot? Joe Girardi is known as a good manager. In a 5-4 game in the 9th with a runner on 3rd, he chose to pitch to Miguel Cabrera last night.

2016 Cubs catch-all thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 3, 2016 -> 09:46 AM) Everyone talks about the rebuild, but this team has spent a ton of money too. That gets lost in the narrative. Yes. The tanking for draft picks is way overblown. They made some great trades and signings, and spend several hundred million. Their prizes for sucking were good in Bryant and Schwarber, but what if Houston did the right thing and drafted Bryant? A lot of that tanking would have been for nothing.

2015-2016 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 3, 2016 -> 01:38 AM) Warriors bench has been severely underrated all year. Shaun Livingston was the 4th pick in his draft class for a reason (legit Penny comp) and, of course, was derailed by one of the more horrific, and I MEAN f***ING HORRIFIC, knee injuries you'll ever see in life. Barbosa is a former 6th man of the year. Iguodala is ELITE defensively and above average offensively, especially his passing. Ezeli is one of the better backup C's in the game. They're just loaded. Not overreacting here. Cavs MUST win game 2. No way they're beating GS 4 of 5. As long as GS stays healthy, this season was over before it began. OKC's chance was GS wasn't healthy.

Byrd suspended 162 games
QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 2, 2016 -> 02:33 PM) I have no sympathy for these guys and the supplements. When it is your job to know what you eat and drink contains and that you could lose your career for eating or drinking the wrong stuff you just make damn certain the ingredients are not banned. But at his age, he's just trying to hang on and not have to work a "real job". Especially a guy like Byrd who has already been suspended. He knew what he was taking. I think the innocent mistake does happen once in a great while, but it would surprise me if most of the busted don't have other things the tests haven't caught up with in their systems as well.

Improving the team from within
I understand how people would think Coats is a better fit than Sands, and he may be. But it isn't obvious. .366/.411/.522, Avi Garcia's splits in AAA. It hasn't translated to a lot of success. And he did this as a 22-23 year old.

Improving the team from within
QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 2, 2016 -> 02:30 PM) If Coats' name were Courtney Hawkins, he would have been called up. Maybe, but I don't think there is some sort of conspiracy. If Sands head was totally in it, if he played at Charlotte, chances are he would put up huge numbers. The question with Coats is can he do damage against major league pitching, and can he do damage playing part time against major league pitching. If the Sox had the Twins record, we would probably have started to find out. A lot of players have lit it up for the Knights and fizzled if called up. IMO, there is nothing more the Sox would like than to call up one of their own and have them be successful with the bat. It's been far too long. I don't think the round when they were picked really matters, at least consciously.

Byrd suspended 162 games
So he won't appeal and claims he used a tainted supplement. Total accident. Alrighty then. When the Tribe were in town, Byrd hit a homer the first game of the DH. My buddy was yelling "Balco" at him. He's a genius.

Robin Ventura sacrifice bunted with the 3 hitter in the 7th inning
Bruce Bochy, who most consider a pretty good manager, had Melky sacrifice when he was roided up .346 hitting Melky.

This weekend's match-ups with DET
QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 2, 2016 -> 11:57 AM) I actually make this mistake ALL the time and have no idea why. Is it a mixture of Carlos Santana and Jose Quintana? I really have no idea why I keep doing it. The Red Sox used to have a Carlos Quintana, and the above with players starting with Q. I've caught myself a few times, but have straightened it out the last year or so.

Robin Ventura sacrifice bunted with the 3 hitter in the 7th inning
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 2, 2016 -> 10:30 AM) Except playing for a tie game (the likeliest occurrence in that situation) instead of a big inning on the road is pretty questionable, especially with the shape psychologically that the White Sox bullpen was in. Now you can argue we won road/away games at Texas (Monday) and last night in completely improbable fashion when we were able to tie them up (3-1 now in extras) and had the BABIP "luck" of some quite fortunate DP plays, but you're not going to continue to beat those odds of more frequently losing a tie game on the road on a consistent basis unless you have the Yankees' or Royals' pens...and even those pens only go 3-4 deep in terms of really dependable guys, not 6-8. Let's not forget that key number, the BAA for Harvey his third time through the batting order was .509. 509! It's the reason the NY Post thanked Ventura for "doing his former team a solid" the next day. The score was 0-0, and if .509 applies to everyone, not just Melky who was 0-2 and not looking too good.
