  1. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 03:13 PM) You either buy or sell. Either you think you can make the postseason and strengthen that thought by adding a bat or you sell because you don't think you have enough. Don't just sit there and think we have enough, because honestly we don't. The one time the Sox won the WS, they added Geoff Blum who wasn't a big add at the time. Became one in one AB, but other than that one AB was pretty insignificant. I am not comparing this team to that one, but the deals have to make sense. We can all be disappointed, but if we don't know the cost to add or the offer to sell, it's all complaining perhaps about something you would be complaining about not happening.
  2. Glad they didn't overpay for Cespedes. His price to the White Sox would have been higher than what they would have taken from the Mets. Hung on to Shark, mixed emotions. If the last week was for real, or at least semi-real, this team is going to win games. All in all, pretty surprised at nothing though.
  3. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 03:02 PM) Between Sale last night, Billy Pierce passing away, all the moves other teams made to improve themselves, Detroit getting a lot stronger for next season compared to a week ago...all of the excitement about the last two months of the season has kind of gone out of the balloon. The excitement the last 2 months of the season? LMAO.
  4. If the situation was reversed, and the packages were similar, I am sure Hahn would trade a guy like Cespedes to the Mets rather than the Tigers. Just be happy the Sox didn't overpay a divison rival for a rental.
  5. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 02:45 PM) lol. how does he know all this from Busch Stadium? KW had RH text him.
  6. QUOTE (RaySox @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 02:35 PM) Maybe Tigers leaked that White Sox aren't favorites to get them to up the price. Who else would?
  7. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 02:18 PM) All indications are the #Padres have nothing happening on Justin Upton. It appears he's staying put at deadline. https://twitter.com/jcrasnick/status/627195732957769728 Pay him to play meaningless games. That's a pretty expensive draft pick to hang on to. OTOH, considering this GM is pretty new, it would show others he won't cave at the end. Still , using these guys to try to increase the offer isn't exactly new.
  8. I think the KU kid had the color of his Sox mixed up. The Cubs, Padres and Red Sox were supposedly discussing 3 ways (and some trades as well).
  9. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 02:12 PM) They could always work out an extension before the end of the year. Yes, but this close to free agency doesn't make too much sense to pass that up. Especially when it is Detroit, because no matter what, Detroit sucks and always will.
  10. Might as well wait until the last second and call some bluffs.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 02:08 PM) It's hard to believe that Cespedes won't move when the Tigers moved Price and Cespedes won't return a draft pick. Not only that but if they want Cespedes back next season, he has to be on another team.
  12. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 01:59 PM) I'm guessing Nightengale is getting pestered by White Sox fans and decided to just throw out a hollow update I think you are probably correct.
  13. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 01:55 PM) What scares me about that tweet is Nightengale has a very good Sox source, so our FO might actually think that this is an issue when they have Leury Garcia rotting on the bench. Have you ever heard of a team not upgrading because they "have no room" on their roster? It is not even a consideration.
  14. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 01:51 PM) The #WhiteSox would love to add a bat, but unless they move position player off their 25 man roster, they have no room. https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/627189253835862016 How did we not catch that earlier? Well then, this deadline is OVA If that is real, Nightengale must be on Quaaludes and gin.
  15. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 01:42 PM) One other thing to think about...we are only .5 a game ahead of Texas who added Cole Hamels (and Hamilton is back healthy...no clue what that will actually mean but he's back). Not saying they are contenders, just saying, as currently constructed (and within a crazy run) they are only .5 game back of us and just added Cole Hamels. Their are a hell of a lot of teams around the Sox in the standings who have upgraded pretty significantly. The White Sox upgraded this offseason, and that didn't exactly pay immediately. I wouldn't be too worried about other teams' upgrades. If you think your team is an 85 win team, or should be with an addition, I think you go for it. If not, sell Shark, maybe get a Napoli for nothing, and see what happens.
  16. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 01:30 PM) For some reason I had thought Mets had to remain payroll neutral. I'll believe the Mets are serious when the deal is done.
  17. One big reason I wouldn't do a Shark for rental bat is you then are losing a decent draft pick. If the net returns gives you the rental bat plus something better than that pick, IMO, it's a no brainer.
  18. The Sox have been buzzer beaters before. The Contreras and Peavy deals were announced after the deadline had past. Find a team desperate for a starter, and desperate for some salary relief with a hitter. Lose Shark, gain a hitter, and gain some prospects.
  19. Supposedly DD wanted Gausman for Cespedes. It will be interesting to see how far the price tag drops once the clock gets close to zero. The Sox have to be one of the first, if not the first in priority who would actually put in a claim if Cespedes was put on waivers in the next few days. As for Upton, if your out of it, holding on to him for a draft pick is either a total negotiating ploy, or a total bluff. Why pay him the $6 million or $7 million left on his contract to play meaningless games? I find it hard to believe they will hang on to him. It also shows teams aren't offering much.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 12:07 PM) That's not the calculation. The calculation is: Shark > Johnson Cespedes/Upton > Avi Which of those > signs is bigger? Plus, you might be getting a prospect or 2 with the bat.
  21. If teams would give you a sweet package for Samardzija, and you could get a decent bat for a guy like Beck, I'd do both. It would be kind of a wash, but you improve your every day line up. One out of 5 it is Johnson instead of Samardzija which is probably a downgrade, but if you are lucky, not that big, and you improve your system.
  22. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 09:51 AM) I agree, but I don't know if many others would. Of our top pitching prospects, I think he's the one that is most likely to be a bust. The thing is, if you are willing to trade Montas, you can get a whole lot more value than 2 months of Upton.
  23. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 09:49 AM) If Montas can be the centerpiece of an Upton deal then I'd trade him in a heartbeat. Frankie Montas for 2 months of Justin Upton to hope for a 1 game playoff? Way too much.
  24. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 09:46 AM) I'm sure they love Micah a lot less now since Sanchez has emerged fielded so well and the stick has been on fire. I doubt it. And even if they did, there is zero chance they would trade him for a rental for a shot at a 1 game playoff.
  25. So they aren't trading Anderson, you know they love Micah,so it would take a whole lot to get him, and Montas surely won't move for a rental. The Sox are going to be hanging on to their top guys. No need to get riled up over nothing.
