I love the attitude but I am in the camp that the White Sox think he is not going to pitch and the insurance money is paying for these new guys. Getting healthy and throwing and being a big league pitcher are vastly different. I hope I am wrong as if they get 30 starts out of him they win the division and are as good as anyone in MLB.

Bard has a better chance of closing than Jenks at this point. Getting Papelbon would be good as he will be a Type A and the Red Sox be looking to dump the salary. I am not sure the Sox have the prospect(s) to give up.

Kerry Wood signs 1 year, $1.5 million deal with Cubs
Harry Chappas replied to caulfield12's topic in The Diamond Club
How did it originally end with Wood in the past. Didn't the high paying cubs choose to not sign him and thus he went to Cleveland. That was a business decision that he is now passing over in the name of loyalty. Although he wet his pants the last time he pitched at wrigley so maybe he really truly loves everything about that situation. It seems to me he could have gotten a much better deal but he really feels bad for the cubs. Loyalty is one thing but come on, some of it reeks of loser to me as that is the position he is in. -
Which deal would you have preferred?
Harry Chappas replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
There is a risk with both but I voted Crain as he seems to be headed in the right direction and is locked up longer for the same money. Somehow I think Jenks comes in 40 pounds lighter and is a two pitch pitcher. -
It is with great sadness that I request a name change. Jenks has not had Heat in years and now he is no longer a relevant part of my life. Can you please change my screen name to my real name Harry Chappas. Thanks.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 16, 2010 -> 10:59 AM) I was thinking that money was probably allocated to Edwin Jackson's contract. Yes but if Peavy is out next year the money that comes in can be used on the higher payroll.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 15, 2010 -> 09:31 PM) And the relievers who consistently pitch multiple innings are typically pretty bad. Goose Gossage used to go 3 all of the time

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 15, 2010 -> 09:22 PM) That is a pretty big change of heart in a very short period of time. $$$$ talks and I assume with Christmas coming, all stuff will be shut down for a couple of weeks. To not play for the Sox because of his love for the cubs just solidifes the loser cub mentality associated with guys that bleed cubbie blue. Remember Dunn wanted to play there a few weeks ago. Do you want to close for the Marlins or close for a team with as good a shot of any of wininng it all. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2010 -> 09:17 PM) Its performance related. All GMs try. Just to say this is great even if it doesn't work out because KW needs a reliever and Crain was a very good reliever in 2010 is silly. There are a lot of GMs who need relievers that did not offer Crain what KW did. Time will tell who is correct. Duane Schaffer tried real hard drafting guys. They all tried really hard. They didn't perform Duane Schaffer is out of a job. KW didn't can him because he didn't try hard. He canned him because he picked the wrong players. If Crain doesn't perform and cost the Sox 10 times what Lance Broadway cost the Sox, why shouldn't KW's neck be on the line? Because KW has had good success in the past to rely on. Thus his moves are grounded in past success.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 14, 2010 -> 01:01 PM) Why is that the only way? I could certainly see lots of ways that D1 gets moved that don't involve prospects for Greinke. If someone offered you a package involving a talented young SP and another player for him, along with some salary relief, there'd be every reason to grab that deal. If you're 100% convinced that Peavy will be ready on day 1 and you want to start the season with Sale in the rotation, if someone offered you a real good deal for Danks even without a starting pitcher coming back, why not take it? anyone that is even 50% certain Peavy is ready on Day 1 is overly optimistic. Anyone that has faith in Peavy pitching more than 100 innings a season as a certainty moving forward is optimistic. Peavy is a crap shoot that has shown to be injury prone thus you always need a strong 5th and a viable 6th if he is on the roster. With the money the White Sox have invested this offseason, they can not downgrade their rotation and moving Danks for youth and cost relief is foolish. They only have 4 starters now and to move one for a young starter moves Sale to the rotation where he is an unknown and leaves your pen very weak. Spending big money on bullpen arms is a risk as well. -

The only way danks is moved is if the prospects help get Grienke. -
The NL continues to get much better as that NL East is pretty stacked. I am not sure why the Phils did not go after Crawford instead of Lee. Lee seems like overkill to me. They did not lose because of their pitching last year.

Wow. If I am the Rangers I let him go to the NL. The Phillies do not even need him.

White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread

The players choosen are the most recornizable, highest paid and a little ethnic. The fact the quality of players not choosen is as high as it is is more impressive to me. Think of what that would have looked like in previous years. Peavy, Jackson, Beckham, Quentin, Danks, Floyd and Thorton could have been the best players on previous teams. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 09:14 AM) I think suggesting that Tim Beckham won't make it because he has put up a .700 OPS in the minors is silly too. It's absolutely discouraging, but the fact of the matter is, Tim Beckham is just going to be 21 years old next year and it's not as if he's suddenly going to lose the talent that made him the #1 pick. It's going to take one mildly good year for people to jump back on his bandwagon, and with young players, it can be like turning on a light-switch...just have to figure out what he needs to do to be successful. I know nothing of Tim Beckham, I was just trying to clear up what I think his post meant. As far as the Rays are concerned, I think it was terrrible pick as a more MLB ready prospect would be producing now when they need it. Their payroll may be back down t0 $50M this season. They are not gettign the high picks any longer nad thus their farm system may take a hit. I hope it works out as I like them.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 03:37 AM) Are you kidding me? He is employed by the White Sox! I think he was talking about Cowley not Merkin. Rick Hahn is great at his job and I think he is the epitome of stealth. That is who guys need to talk to as a source. Sounds like Reinsdorf and Williams had nothing to do with it at all. The Kids Can Play Part II is all I have t osay about Cowley. Cowley's Twitter is media as he is a media source. Oney Guillen's is not.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 04:07 AM) Unless Tim can make it up before 2012 and start full time, I think that's a pretty safe bet. It doesn't somehow disqualify him from being able to have a good career. I think what he was saying was that Gordon has already played more games in the MLB than Tim ever will. To argue over who will play more is silly at this popint as it looks like Gordon will be hanging around for a while.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 11:18 AM) As things stand now, the battle for 4th OF is Lillibridge, De Aza and Gartrell. This is also where Teahen will be in the mix although they need soemone who can play CF.

to the Twins for Delmon Young....oh wait.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 10:47 AM) Lol we were one player away from the best lineup in baseball last year? I think we're loads better with Dunn in place of Kotsay, but I think there are a number of teams with better lineups. Also, I can't feel bad for a hitting coach for having too much talent to work with. Maybe that was a green post? That was why I used to word potential. They have the talent to have one of the best line-ups in baseball as Rios, Konerko, Quentin, Dunn, Beckham, and Ramirez could all be Silver Slugger award winners. Pierre could bat .300, AJ did this in 2009 and we really do not know what Teahan can bring. Thus Greag Walker is in a bad spot if they do not produce. Sorry no green, I really believe this.
-
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 10:45 AM) come on, the Sox defer one million dollars for 7 years for a special player to the franchise and now you're acting like it's going to be routine? If he is a club amabassador who has to go to Soxfest every year the $1M pays for itself. All he has to do is get drunk and sit in a skybox like Bobby Hall.
-
I feel bad for Greg Walker as he is really in a no win situation now. The White Sox line-up is potentially the best in baseball.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 10:21 AM) This is where it starts though. Do you think teams mean to get themselves in trouble when they defer money? Then all the sudden you wake up and you're cutting checks to Luis Castillo in 2024. Julio Cruz was paid until 2000. Somehow the Sox were able to get past that to sign Albert Belle.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 10:19 AM) So as of right now we have pretty much the same exact offensive lineup from last year except Dunn replaces Kotsay...right? and Morel replaces Teahan.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 10:03 AM) The Cubs are committed to Carlos Pena for nothing in 2012 or 2013, or 2014-2019, for that matter. The guy batted .196 and got $10M. That is a joke I do nto give a f*** what his BABIP was that is a terrible deal.
