  2. QUOTE(the southside tiger @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 07:29 PM) Ive been a northerner all my life, so Im not too familiar with that geography. But what about near major cities? El Paso and San Diego, in particular. At night couldnt they sneak across the border a few miles up from town and walk there by the next morning? The border cities round them up quickly and send them back across the river. The toughest areas to get across are 30-40 miles around any city. Most are looking for jobs up north in the fields or food processing plants. The unemployment rates on the river are usually double digits, so it will not do them any good to hang out here. There are interior checkpoints about 40-50 miles into the US along every road. 100% of northbound vehicles must stop, and many are inspected. You may be asked to provide documentation as to your right to be in the US. All of the roads are regularly patrolled. This forces the illegals onto private land, into the brush. There they must be able to carry a lot of water, in summer about 1 gallon per person, per day. Once they are past the checkpoints, some will rendezvous with friends, relatives, or "coyotes", smugglers of humans. They sometimes can relax a bit at this point. Usually they are on their own to survive for a week to 10 days. To reach a major city, here in Texas, they would need rendezvous 600 miles to Houston, 150 or so to San Antonio. It depends on where they cross. The current efforts have caused many illegals to try riskier and riskier routes that are longer, over worse terrain, and drier. All this to pick your lettuce, mow your lawn, or scrape the food off your restaurant plates.

QUOTE(the southside tiger @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 07:13 PM) Every review Ive ever heard of Pittsburgh was rather unflattering. Youre the first Ive met to actually have liked that place. Which is it, s***hole or shan gri la? Its both, like Chicago.
  5. QUOTE(the southside tiger @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 06:51 PM) Id rather be alive and s***ty than dead and good. Besides, I dont understand, other than trigger happy ranchers, whats down there thats so incredibly dangerous? The Rio Grande? 100 miles of desert. Rattlesnakes, dehydration, criminals, 100+ temperatures. Mostly they die of exposure and dehydration. There are Border Patrol agents to avoid, interior checkpoints to avoid. They will try and travel at night, but any water sources have been drying up. Which is why I laugh when someone thinks a major terrorist attack will come from someone walking across the border. Carrying a suitcase bomb through the desert is a silly thought. If you have the means to carry out a major attack, you can buy someone a plane ticket and a student or tourist visa.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 05:49 PM) Alright, I got a question. I'd prefer to send cash instead of a check. Did anyone else do that or would have any tips on what to do. At the minimum, I would get a money order.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 03:06 PM) I completely agree. Thats why Ive been saying all along.........forget about politics, lets help these people. Too bad our administration didn't think that way. Always time for fund raising I guess.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 01:40 PM) I think Senator Frist has the best idea for helping these people. He shut his f***ing mouth, took off his suit and went down there and did something meaningful with his professional training. People should key off that example. Including Bush. I wish he had gone to the White House immediately, stayed at the White House, and kicked some ass. If he was going to make a tour, how about tomorrow, see the empty New Orleans, visit the places in TX, LA, MS, AL, etc. where victims went. Thank the workers and volunteers, slap a few backs and fly off. BTW, his staff did take the time to alert the media what Frist was doing. He didn't shut his mouth. But I still believe he did his best and I applaud him for it. I also like the fact he probably received some real info on the medical situation. Bringing the word's attention to problems isn't the worse thing in the world to do.

Perhaps we had too many resources. To think that people died because of bureaucratic bungling just makes me cry. We have thousands of intelligent hard working people in our government, it is the greatest government the world has ever seen, and we produced this?! I have to blame the leadership, starting with our President who went fund raising for his party. It sounds like he was getting some very bad information. I believe, if he truly knew what was happening, he would have had everyone winging back to the White House immediately. I can't believe he was given accurate information, and continued his plans. I may disagree with his political views, but his compassion for human suffering is real, and his political thinking is usually first rate, both would have him getting involved sooner rather than later.

Amazing. Who was in charge and why wasn't a complete list of resources from major players like the military, made available? I am getting sicker by the moment thinking about the death and nightmares that could have been avoided. We have the greatest military this planet has ever seen, and we made tham almost non players.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 11:50 AM) Because the problem is not a lack of money or supplies, it's been not realizing the extent of the effects, slow response time and no sense of urgency from the beginning. Mark my words, by Wednesday of next week, when all of this help finally starts arriving in huge quantites, they'll be telling people to stop sending supplies because it's causing gridlock. Well if the government doesn't need the $100,000,000.00 have them send it to me. I assume it would be a wire transfer, not shipped in trucks to New Orleans. The proper government reaction to someone offering $100,000,000.00 is thank you, send it to this account.

  21. Make Me Brave for Life God, make me brave for life: oh, braver than this. Let me straighten after pain, as a tree straightens after the rain, Shining and lovely again. God, make me brave for life; much braver than this. As the blown grass lifts, let me rise From sorrow with quiet eyes, Knowing Thy way is wise. God, make me brave, life brings Such blinding things. Help me to keep my sight; Help me to see aright That out of dark comes light.

QUOTE(56789 @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 09:47 AM) I understand there were alot of poor people who couldnt leave, but im saying there were also people who could easliy leave but didnt want to and are now probably lying about it to TV reporters to make everyone feel bad for them. Sorry, I should have read more carefully. I agree, I am certain there were a few people like that. I wonder why there are any cars left in the city. I would have loaded up all my vehicles and headed out of town. And I believe I wold have picked up some passengers along the way. But hind site is everything. Less than a month ago we were in the path of a hurricane that wound up well south of us. So far in ten years we have been warned a couple times a year, and never really hit. Have I become complacent? Yes. I no longer board up every window, just one area of the house we would go to. I have lots of camping equipment handy, so I know I can make safe drinking water, stay warm and reasonably dry, perform most first aid. But I never pull that stuff into my safe area any more. I never fill my bath tubs like the first few years, never make certain that every water container is full and ready.

QUOTE(56789 @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 09:38 AM) Have you seen any numbers on how many people stayed because they couldnt leave, and because they didnt want to? I know I havent, and no one will. This is America, it is never our fault for anything. People who could have left but decided to stay are now saying how they couldnt leave because they were too poor. No one is gunna go on TV and say "You know what, i made a mistake. I should have left when I had the chance but I decided to stay so I am facing the consequences" and even if someone did say that to a reporter, there is no way in hell they would put it on TV. OK, they start walking. Where do they sleep, with no money for inflated hotel rooms? They cannot carry a lot of food, so how do they eat? Stores and restaurants would be closed within walking distance. Would you leave the shelter of your home to go walking in a hurricane? How far can you walk in one day? How far can you walk carrying a 9 month old baby? How far can a 5 year old walk in one day? :headshake
